Assassin's Creed "Parity": Unity is 900p/30fps on both PS4 & Xbox One

So they are CPU bound...so how would one version be better than the other one? Of course ps4 has better specs but if the engine relies heavily on CPU a better gpu won't help much.

Uh oh. Red flag raised from this new VideogamerTV preview. They pretty much go on to say that it is running like shit. Sometimes not even reaching 30fps.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=evWkZnucgOI

from the article:

'Targeting 900p and 30fps, it sports the same slightly vaselined look as its stable mate, Watch_Dogs, and gets very muddy and choppy in motion. The framerate behaves more erratically than an aristocrat during peasant uprising – obviously it depends on the scene, and the engine seemed to handle quieter streets and interiors without too many issues, but when trying to replicate moments from the trailers, perched up high, looking down on the crowd gathered at Notre Dame, the FPS took a nose dive into the low twenties. This happened a lot, especially during the kind of rooftop chases you can expect to be getting into pretty regularly. We were playing an Xbox One build, but were told that both console versions are the same.'

A cross gen up-port.
Regardless of whether its an 'up-port' or not, what does that matter at all?

PS4 had enough power to do more than the XB1 version yet Bungie didn't take advantage of that. Whether it was an up-port or not, that happened. And its not because MS paid them.

So there is precedent for this.

Your point was ridiculous. The PS4 version is slightly better, therefore I won't buy the game for my Xbox One. That's basically what you implied happens when games don't have parity between versions. It doesn't. People just buy the game for the console they own, or the better version if they own both.

If that's your view, fair enough, but I disagree. Clearly, as has been shown in the post I quoted, there are people that will now buy one version instead of another, because it doesn't matter which they buy.

Clearly, it also works the other way, as now people won't buy it, because it is not a better version on one system.

I don't think it's a stretch at all to see that some also won't buy it, because it is better on a system they do not own.

EDIT: Oh look, there it is, ridiculous right nib95?

i don't think it's so out there to suggest that all of sony's "superior version" pomp has had a detrimental effect on xbone multiplat sales. the percentage of gamers who are up in arms about parity who would actively boycott the title is probably pretty tiny, whereas the percentage of people who don't want to buy an outright inferior version of a game (while still relatively small) is probably a little higher.

Very fishy.
Not to go all Alex Jones on this one, but I think Microsoft plays a role in here.

I'm not personally affected since I played AC4 for like 2 hours and never touched it again because its just not my type of game, but I despise the concept of parity.
One console is clearly more powerful => one version should have a clear advantage.

I am so pissed right now
They said they want to achieve 1080 p and 60 FPS on PS4
And now this shit
how much gave MS to Ubi ?

LOL in this way they have actually created more debate than if the PS4 version was running at 1080p :D They're admitting they're doing this on purpose and achieving higher res isn't even a problem considering they're CPU limited :D

Btw graphics are not made just by screen resolution, there are many other aspects as well.

I really can’t believe that quote. I was looking forward to picking this up on PS4, but now I won’t purchase it – I’m sure it won’t matter to UBI since millions will flock to the game no matter which platform, but they’ve lost my $60 unless they patch this. Now I fear the same thing will/is happening to Far Cry 4.

Another reason i avoid Ubisoft these days because there bullshit not getting my money at all.

This is just to ridiculous and how many times i read it i cannot stop laughing.

That's disappointing...
How long did it take for the Black Flag 1080p patch to come out? Hopefully that ends up happening with Unity as well.

Makes sense that the current-gen only version, that you would think would be optimized better for the new console, runs at a lower resolution than last year's cross-gen game. Seriously, ACIV looked pretty good.

Also, they didn't seem to mind the resolution difference back then.

One thing I love about the gaming community is the ability to raise hell about small issues. Raise hell Neogaf, do it. I don't want none of that aliasing. It's an open world game, those distant objects on PS4 are going to look awful and it's thanks to bloody parity.

Why is performance a small thing? FPS/Resolution are both important aspects in a game. The fact that a more powerful system is being forced to downgrade so that it matches another system with worse specs, is really bad for the game and gamers in general. I say this as someone that owns both systems. Getting tired of devs limiting their games because they want to appease these platforms. Give people the option if it's there. Thing is, not everyone bought an X1 for the specs (they bought it for the OS, the MS Eco System, the MS first party titles, the controller etc.). Those people aren't suddenly going to stop playing their X1 and sell it to buy a PS4.,

I just don't see why PS4 owners should be limited because of someone else.

PC: 900p/30FPS hardlock for parity.

This has to be the MOST hilarious thing I've witnessed in the last few years in gaming. Really, it's hard to top. Not that they are doing that, that's ok. But that they are dumb enough to flat out make a statement about it, pointing out that they wanted to get rid of discussions. Hilarious.

You laugh but EA locked NFS rivals to 30FPS, though they said it was for your own good due to network conditions rather than "debates"

I chuckle over two observations.

1) Are we really surprised that a company that churns out these games like clockwork to the point where all of their games end up feeling the same would decide to go for "parity" to make it even easier on themselves to churn out these games? I'm really not surprised.

2) Hey PS4 owners, do you feel that little twitch in your eye? That's the feeling that you get when you begin to believe that developers aren't using the tech in your machine to its fullest. Now you get a tiny, tiny taste of what PC gamers have been feeling for many, many years now. Except multiply that by 100. =)

I really don't think MS is paying publishers to make shitty PC ports.

oh, fuck off Ubisoft.

If a console CAN handle a better version it SHOULD come to be. Stop worrying about pissing off consumers that might get a slightly worse version of the game. This parity nonsense is insane...

Last time I checked GAF was absolutely furious about Skyrim on PS3, with people complaining it was unfair that 360 got a superior version.

Now that PS4 is more powerful than XBONE, no one seems to be crying foul now.

I was looking forward to getting the Assassin's Creed watch thing from Amazon, but with this news they can fuck right off.

Pre-order cancelled.

I hope this trend does not continue. We may be guaranteed a sub-1080p generation for multiplats..

Fuck this noise. Parity only forces a downgrade of one, not an upgrade of another.

My chances of purchase just went from "eh, maybe" to "fuck off".

After watch dogs and this, I don't see myself purchasing a Ubisoft game for a long time.

We all know Witcher 3 is going to be parity. The dev team is reading this article now going "why didn't we just say this instead of pussyfooting around the point?"

ah. neglect the superior hardware to "stop debates."

good luck with that. i bought one machine over the other because it's more powerful. more. powerful. now you're telling me I have to play the exact same game as my bone brethren? those loyal gents who stuck with microsoft despite having to accept lesser hardware?

why does that make sense ubisoft. how will that not start another debate.

His explanation of being CPU bound for AI, and implying how that's somehow the reason for the lower resolution literally makes no sense, lol.

And there was a quote flying around just a few months ago that they were looking into 60fps, if I'm not pulling this out of my ass.

I somewhat feel like canceling my PS4 pre-order and waiting for the PC version to roll around. 1920x1080 should be a given at this point, especially when you don't have worry about scaling with last gen hardware.

"Last year's Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag also shipped at 900p/30fps on both PS4 and Xbox One. A post-release patch, however, bumped the PS4 version to 1080p. Ubisoft has given no indication that it has plans to do the same for Unity."

So I wonder how long this info will be glossed over in the thread?

IIRC we knew the patch was coming because the game was supposed to be running at 1080p on PS4 from the getgo.

On topic: I really like MS, I want an XBO so bad for Sunset Overdrive, D4 and Quantum Break but man! Between this and the Tomb Raider deal with them not being straightforward about it, I fucking hate the way they handle things sometimes. Screwing over users just for parity. Fuck parity!

I got AC1, AC2, Brotherhood, Revelations and even AC3. I got burned off the series so bad because AC3 was such a terrible game but despite that, I ended up getting AC4 for PS4. I won't be getting Unity at all now, I'm fine without playing the series, I've been fine since the clusterfuck AC3 was. AC Rogue? Maybe if they had put Haytham as the main character.

Well, thanks Ubisoft's PR department for saving me $60

They're releasing a half baked game on time, no matter what.

Has nothing to do with parity gate.

I assume when they actually FINISH the game, lol. They'll patch in 1080 on ps4.

I don't think I'm going to pick this game up. Fuck this.

I'll wait until it's cheap or rent it.

Wait, was it confirmed this is because of MS paying Ubisoft? Or are you just jumping to conclusions?

Good lord baby Jesus, what will it take for some people to get a clue? Just off the top of my head we have MS giving 1/2 truths when the consoles launched about every one of their games being in 1080P, plus, of course, the great Cloud Myth of 2013 wherein graphics computations would be handled on a super secret server more powerful than Sony servers could ever hope to be and that are not subject to broadband limitations. Then we have MS sending their own engineers to Bungie to get the fall's biggest launch at 1080P. Now we have the developer of one of the other biggest launches saying, "Der, we don't want to start debates and stuff, so we gimped the PS4 version for parity."

But yeah, let's wait to see a video of Phil signing a parity contract in front of his grandmother who vouches its really him on video. Then, maybe, just maybe, we will believe MS is using its influence (money or incentives) to force parity on the consumer.
