Sony’s venture for China intends to package 200,000 consoles annually, according to a filing on the website of the China (Shanghai) Pilot Free Trade Zone. Masaki Tsukakoshi, a Tokyo-based spokeswoman for Sony Computer Entertainment Inc., confirmed the document’s authenticity and said actual production amounts may differ.

XB1 has a 5 million unit cap in China, but I'm not seeing any lifetime cap being mentioned for the PS4.

Maybe you should've put "launching" in the title or something? At first I thought you meant box assembly or something ...

Oddly enough, their still isn't a launch date according to the article lol

So probably launching January? Perhaps February?

Man that is low.
China=X1 land then.

Did you think China=XBOX?

Check their local forum.

You will see China is still belonging to PlayStation.

You just remember one famous slogan in China.

Just remember "索尼大法好". It means SONY is pretty awesome because they put many efforts on Chinese localization. Not like MS or Nintendo.

It is a number game.
If Sony is limited to 200k, consumers will have to use the grey market or import the device.
But for the mainstream, that would be too hard of an option so MS will win by default since Sony will have a huge supply constraint on them.
I believe after selling/shipping 100k, MS is estimating they will sell 1M by the end of next year.
Sony? Only 400k if all will be sold out next year. That is a huge gap that Sony will never be able to catch up if the government will continue to limit Sony product.

They can negotiate ya know. Perhaps I shouldn't have said 'will' though.

Well, I don't how can you negotiate to a government that gave 5M to a competitor straight up from the get go when that same government would only allow another to produce 200k/annually.
The negotiation will be really hard since this is the Chinese government, it would be like Sisyphus pushing a boulder over a mountain to just get a new deal done.

No idea. All I know is that the bigger majority of Chinese gamers want the PS4. It DOES seem odd that they gave permission for MS to set a 5 million goal though.

MS probably forked over a greater some of capital to get that done. Or made concessions to government demands.

Regardless, this is pretty surprising. 100k shipped already for the XB1 and Sony are
already hampered by a units cap and no launch date :/

Right, and I hope Sony the best of luck because with the Umbrella Revolution, China doesn't look to happy to negotiate for more outside influence into their culture.
Their youths will get more "corrupted."

Well ... it does say the number isn't necessarily set in concrete, so clearly they have 'some' indication that the Chinese government are willing to listen.

Of course that could be down but we can't discount up.

Come on, people.
What makes you think that Xbox One will perform better than PlayStation 4 in China.
So far, the fact is PS4 players in China are far more than Xbox players in China. They bought the console from other market and play online the same as you do.
And why the revo would affect this business? It just won't, the reason is complicated.

Perhaps Sony are being very careful with the markets. If they can only produce a certain amount of consoles a year, they'll be pretty confident they can sell more PS4s next year in Japan/US/Europe. It wouldn't be wise to suddenly ship a huge ammount of consoles to China only to realise they haven't got enough for the two most important regions: UK/US (in terms of stopping MS getting any footing). If it sells well in China, perhaps they'll up production but I'm betting they're working on a 'wait and see' policy. MS probably committed to more consoles because at present they can produce more than they can sell.

The Umbrella revolution happened in Hong Kpng, where they already have official sale of PS4 already. I don't think this revolution is going to affect the decision on whether they are bringing in the PS4 or not.

Sony is probably allocating fewer units to China because they have fewer untits to allocate to china. Where MS has a lot more units to allocate to China (they aren't selling as well).

Sony doesn't have to pay import tariffs when the PS4 arrives in the Chinese Free Trade Zone, since technically it hasn't been imported yet. Packaging, assembly and even manufacturing are done at FTZ's for this and other strategic reasons.

Man that is low.
China=X1 land then.

Not really. I'm sure it had a good enough launch, but sales will probably collapse for the X1. it'll take very, very long if ever to sell through the 5 million cap. 200k seems low, yes, but maybe that's about as much as the Chinese market can actually take (or at least what Sony thinks they can).

It won't be big for consoles until next gen at the earliest and even then I don't see them taking off in a large manner (at least, imo)

MS didn't sell 5 million, so it will be interesting to see how far PS4 can get at 200K.

I was under the impression that Sony was favoured in China

It is, heavily so. I mean China does follow whatever is popular around the world and that is ps4 right now.

Also people are wrong to equate 200k production to 5 million consoles approved. MS got an approval to sell 5 million consoles in china but this document is Sonys estimate on how much they'll produce at their Shanghai factory.

It's cute that you think China could belong to any console. Adorable.

Based on the article I feel like this is more of a Sony decision. Nowhere in this article does it mention that PS4 is stuck at a 200k limit. Only that at this point Sony plans to sell 200k annually based on expectations.

Yea, this is a huge win for Microsoft, How did they negotiate 5 million?

They entered an agreement with a Chinese company and gave them 51 % of the Xbox business in the FTZ. I think people don't understand that these consoles don't go to China. China is closed off. But China opened the Shanghai Free Trade Zone to test the ground for a more open approach. So these 5 million Xbox Ones and 200k annual PS4s (if they get approved) are not for all of China. They are to be sold only in the trade zone which is an area of about 30 km^2.

Wow if this is true i i dont know if ms blackmailed the chinese government or if the chinese government only wants to give the new competitor a chance. Asia is pretty much sony land, because its japanese.

Man i hope ms wont fuck it up in china. This is a huge opportunity.

If i understood this news correctly....

Is Nintendo still doing their iQue stuff over there?
iQue still exists but Nintendo is thinking of developing a brand new console for emerging markets. Because only that way, according to Iwata, can they succeed in China.

I sure am glad that strategy worked out for them with iQue Player. Back then a certain Mr Iwata also said they need a special console tailored to emerging markets.
