There is air in the chip bags so that they can be handled without crushing the chips too much-- it provides protection. Sometimes you'll get defective bags that have almost no air and if you get annoyed by crushed chips typically.., those bags are the worst.

Apples are usually months old by the time you buy it at the fruit stand. Bananas are also old. They keep them in humidity-controlled refrigerators and often spray a ripening agent on the bananas right before they put them out at the stand in the grocery store (maybe that's why they go bad so quickly?).

this is funny in the eye of a guy who grew up in a place where we have to cut banana trees because they are becoming nuisance and end up housing for mosquitoes. Bananas back in my hometown are everywhere. And yeah of course they are fresh.

and this got me thinking are banana trees, really trees? their "trunk" is soft, and you can easily peel them into layers(like onions).

If you had enough sticks of gum that when placed end to end would reach to the moon, if you placed them end to end they would reach the moon!

I've told this one here before, but it's handy.

See the little arrow next to the gas pump picture on your dashboard? It indicates what side of the car the tank is on. I believe someone last time pointed out there are a few rare exceptions for older vehicles (or possibly only vehicles in Europe) but 99% of the cars you'll ever drive will comply with this.

You can put a light amount of food grade diatomaceous earth in cat food to help keep feral cat colonies healthy.

Don't ever mix Vinegar with Bleach. It creates the same poison gas used by the Germans in WWI. You can, however, mix Vinegar with baking soda to clean out your sink.

  • 1 'large' calorie is defined as the amount of thermal energy required to heat 1 kilogram of water by 1 degree Celsius, measured in Joules. 1 large calorie is equal to 1000 'small' calories, a single of which is defined as the amount of thermal energy required to heat 1 gram of water by 1 degree Celsius. The large calorie is the standard unit you see everyday for measuring energy from food.
  • It's good practice in product design and engineering to round/fillet any sharp edges of your product as much as possible, especially if the process of manufacturing involves casting and molds. The rounded edges ensure that the material doesn't stick as much to the inside of the mold when you try and take it out, and it makes the product generally safer as well.
  • Make sure you're well stocked-up on curatives before heading out. Also, lanterns are a necessity by night.

Came here to post this. Blew my mind (I'm simple, leave me alone) when I first found out.

I learned that kangaroos can swim and are eaten. Both kind of surprised me more than it should have.

The Japanese have a word to describe the image of sunlight filtering through the trees:「木漏れ日」(komorebi).

The Chinese character for "whale" 「鯨」is literally composed of the characters for "fish" 「魚」and "capital" 「京」.

In Japanese, the word "kami" can either mean "god", "paper" or "hair" depending on the pitch accent and context.

One of the most complex Kanji commonly used in contemporary Japanese (though not technically part of the official, government-sanctioned list of commonly used characters),「鬱」, has 29 strokes. It means "depression".

did you know that one method of decaffeinating coffee beans/grounds is to use superfluid carbon dioxide, and the leftover product is a fluid mixture of caffeine and CO2 that is then used in soda drinks

Eating out with friends decreases depression, and is known to cheer people up. So if your feeling sad hit up a friend, grab a burger or something.

This makes a lot of sense. Some of my best times with my friends is at a casual restaurant just hanging out.

Banana trees are not, in fact, trees, they are herbs. The strain commonly found in Western markets is called the Cavendish. If your grandparents ever told you that bananas tasted better in their youth, believe them, they grew up eating the "Big Mike," or Gros Michel. It is said to have a better taste, and texture. The Gros Michel was devastated by a fungus called Panama disease, which led to the more disease-resistant Cavendish becoming the primary food banana.

Also, all food bananas are clones. We have genetically modified them so that their seeds are small enough to not be noticeable as you eat them. But as a consequence, they can't reproduce.

Livestock-protecting dogs typically drive away even predators that easily outmatch them like lions and bears just with aggressive communication from a distance.

If anyone here is interested in learning fun trivia like this, I highly, highly, highly, highly recommend checking out the show QI. It's nothing but a bunch of british comedians and such joking around and answering really weird, unbelieve trivia questions. And there's like 10 seasons already. It's superb.

According to NPD, the game only sold 286 copies...IN ITS ENTIRE LIFE.

Is this why they take some predators/prey to water and drown them by standing on them?

I'm not sure, I was told in passing by a traveling Australian guy. It started out as me asking if Australians eat Kangaroo, and than it went on to a tangent. That said, it would make sense for Kangaroos to fight in the water if they have the advantage. It wouldn't surprise me seeing as they're way more clever than I originally thought.

Is it atmospheric air or is nitrogen/argon pumped into the bags?

It costs more than a penny to manufacture a penny coin.

For instance, as of 2011, it costs 2.41¢ to make a one-cent coin.

That little piece of knowledge fucked me up, man.
