I don't wanna get too specific, so let's stay a bit vague and mysterious for now.

I'm not. I know the guy very well. I'm not.

A buy out will never, ever, ever happen.

But I like that idea about the suppliers.

Best idea is to setup a fake client, with a huge job. But of course, the client can't pay top dollar so thats when they meet your friend. Fake client keeps him busy with work, hates all of it, and never pays him.

Something like that.

Uh, he's obviously joking. Call the authorities because he knows someone who works there? Yes, the authorities that have reign over all of the US because they can for sure waste their time on this to find out the identities of all parties involved.

Call them and tell them.. What? A guy is trying to find a way to beat his competitor..?

You really don't want to engaged in a price warfare with out adjusting your operations. Doing that will choke the profits for you and for him. Instead focus on quality of work/products or try to cut waste, be more efficient at what you do. If you can drive productivity up you can then decrease your price. Its hard to achieve quality and productivity up at the same time but try focusing on one or they other. (productivity most likely) that will help you to decrease the price you charge on your products.

Frasier said:
Frasier: You know the expression, "Living well is the best revenge"?

Niles: It's a wonderful expression. I just don't know how true it is. You don't see it turning up in a lot of opera plots. "Ludwig, maddened by the poisoning of his entire family, wreaks vengeance on Gunther in the third act by living well."

Frasier: All right, Niles.

Niles: "Whereupon Woton, upon discovering his deception, wreaks vengeance on Gunther in the third act again by living even better than the Duke."

Frasier: Oh, all right!

I always think of this exchange, in these situations.

IS HE?

NO ONE CAN EVER KNOW.

NotTheGuyYouKill, don't worry about Kraftwerk, your not doing anything wrong

yes he is, he's trying to ruin lives. Think about all the collateral damage. It's people like OP that this world is still a bunch of apes flinging shit at each other. Ethics and civility are mere facades over the true nature of the world. People use OP's way of thinking to create big, idiotic corporations who damage the world immensely in the name of personal financial gain.

There's nothing that will change OP's predatory outlook on life, all you can do is drive the devil down in the hole.

If he is offering the same service and products at a lower price, and taking less margins, sounds like he is the better option for your mutual potential customers?

real answer: who cares?

I know I can get into price warring, and that's what we've done, I simply don't like it. Doing so delays other plans that we're working on.

How big a threat is this company? Can both of your companies still exist with your company maintaining and fulfilling growth expectations?

Do you really need to invest in competing directly with this start-up?

Leverage your personal connections and rapport with existing customers. Try to contextualize him as a disgruntled employee who is more interested in avenging nonexistent slights and causing drama than in actually running a stable business. Try to frame the undercutting as unsustainable and a desperate attempt to steal business by misleading customers. You exist to ensure their construction needs are met professionally and consistently over the long haul, construction isn't a whimsical sector for those struck with flights of fancy.

You don't adjust prices wildly with no concern for whether you'll need to raise them in six months or a year down the road. He exists to merely exploit customers as mere tools in the pursuit of his own personal vendetta. Who knows if he'll get bored of this in a year or so and just quit, they can save a few bucks this quarter and end up paying the price next year, or they can realize that it's better to do business with professionals. You're a family run business, you're not going anywhere.

I'm assuming your customers are other businesses however. And that you have personal connections and that your business relationship is more person to person than entity to entity.

I agree. The only option he really has is to advertise. OP really needs to ask if this is worth it.

Well, apparently OP, it was as simple as calling the police on the guy because he doesn't like your business.

He's kidding right?

Let the person responsible for most of your success go to the competition for more money and watch the company implode when they are given full control over the asylum.

I've PMed you some specifics if you're interested.

When the OP started a thread on GAF instead of hiring smarter people to tackle this problem at his own company.

We have enough smart people, I'm just fostering more discussion and advice here.

this

you beat them by being better than them, don't go into business if you don't want to face competition like this

Sure, here is a direct quote;

The scary language you use, and you literally said how much significantly bigger than him you are.

Me and my family came to san fransicso from Guan Jing in the Xianku province in the 50's. My parents worked their ass off to start a small business to support us through school. A decade later another came came and ran him out and made my dad declare bankruptcy,

His spirit was completely broken, and he is still a zombie all these decades later. He is just an empty shell. A husk of his former self.

Not going to let that happen again to another person.

You will rue this day, the day you made a thread on gaf.

Which is why you should be supporting the OP having his business taken away by some new company stealing product ideas

Whatever man, Try to spin this anyway you want.

Already sent a an email to the authorities. I have a good friend who works there.
LOL

Bohoo.

Seriously though, next thing you're reporting people who read Machiavelli or see House of Cards? He wants to beat him fair and square (ie: not through stuff that's ilegal), I reported this to google, btw. (not really)

And I'm sorry about your family story, but life's not fair. If after all these years he's a shadow of his former self it's his fault for not snapping out of it- life goes on, it's a shame his didn't - but he has only himself to blame on that one, it's not "oh I'd be so much happier if...".

Sometimes you win sometimes you lose, comes with the territory. If anything he seems weak. I understand that you respect him and owe him stuff, because we all do to our parents, but stop carrying a vendetta against people that want to succeed at their business in spite of others and avoid years of shit and counting dimes. From what he's saying he's merely answering because he feels threatened. Sure, the other guy is small now, but you don't sleep on the job he's undercutting him.

Perhaps that's what your father didn't, he sounds soft. You can't expect some other player to "oh, that's that guy's turf, I don't need to grow my business" hell no.

SORRY.

MrArseFace
Which is what I'm doing currently, I just want to further and cut him off at the knees, metaphorically.

There's a lot of bad blood between me and him, so I'm definitely not.

Much bigger than him. In terms of the rest of the market, we're mid-range.

Yes.

He would if I got down and nasty, but I want to avoid that if possible.

Bigger than his, not the biggest in the market but growing.

Some products, yes. Other products, no.

If you're mid-range you might not want to be too price competitive and erode your own margins - they'll be difficult to revert later. Maybe introduce a separate tier of lower end products specifically designed to compete aggressively on price?

Go Apple on him. Whatever you're selling, make sure it's of a far better quality. When they slip up ramp up the advertising to fuck up his business.

Once he gives up feel free to do jack shit. That's the company way.

Kraftwerk; you said your family was a struggling chinese family from a deeeep province of China that moved to sanfran to open a small business, but in another thread I remember you mentioned living in the Middle East growing up as a teenager, and in Toronto one time you were attacked because the person assumed you were a chinese jew as you were hanging out a synagogue

That's a lot of living around the world for a struggling family. Your parents have worked hard, and this is very admirable.

Are you trolling NeoGaf with your post?

OP focus on making money, not on destroying someone who will try to bring you down with him.

Success is, and always has been, relative. You stand taller when everyone else is bowing at your feet.

It's time OP's competition got the message. "I will end your livelihood for an extra 2% market share". This is serious business.

lol

While that might be viscerally satisfying, I'm not evil enough for that.

Do it like the pros. Corporate Espionage.

Why would you need to espy on people who are copying you? I'm assuming that this isn't some proprietary shit that he's worried about plugging a leak on and this is all stuff that's just being RE'd. Unless he's wanting to headhunt his competitor and steal his competitor's talent, what would he learn?

Building materials? Corner the market of prefabricated gloryhole stall walls with attachable, disposable gloryhole condoms and patent it.
