PS4 System Software Preview – USB Music Player, New Home Screen Colors, More

I'm hoping for Bluetooth Speaker support at some point.

I've got the system connected to a monitor and using headphones for sound. Would be cool if it just connected to UE Boom.

As someone who used to use the music player on ps3 all the time I'm pretty bummed out that it still isn't as good as that...

This one will work in all games and can run off USB, something the PS3 one never could manage.

There are definite improvements to be made, though.

I came into this thread wondering why PS4 users haven't yet got Suspend/Resume. I'm leaving flabbergasted you can't pause downloads.

How about install times on the PS4 versus XB1? That seems core to the OS and something that Sony had beat from the beginning. It's a huge feature that anyone espouses XB1 over PS4 always seems to ignore.

Well, I personally don't have a single disc game between them, so it's a completely invisible benefit to me. It is definitely a valid one though... but it's not like nobody ever mentions it, is it?

remote play and upcoming share play are truly next gen features that competitor isnt even close to having... they are huge differentiator.

they are about playing games and not watching movies.... just playing games.

Well, remote play kinda requires a whole separate console... and it makes sense that MS doesn't have an equivalent, because they don't have an equivalent console. It'd be like complaining that the PS2 didn't have any functionality similar to the Gamecube+GBA link. It's more of a hardware feature than an OS feature, and is far from free.

Shareplay though sounds great, and actually crosses off one of my most wanted XBO features (being able to broadcast your screen over Skype). I don't generally want to broadcast streams over Twitch to everybody, but I'd like to share my screen with a single other person, and not have a huge delay destroy my interaction with them. Shareplay should offer that ability even if I never actually need to share the gameplay itself.

Again though, I'm not saying that Sony isn't providing any feature of merit that MS lacks (or vice versa). It's that these things aren't things are more nice to have, than a requirement. The Xbox One not having remote play or shareplay isn't having a negative effect on my general experience when playing the console. Stuff like not being able to pause huge ass downloads (and as a result being hesitant to start them), or not knowing when friends appear online (so rarely playing with them), is actually making my experience on PS4 worse... even when compared to last gen's consoles. The PS4 currently lacks basic level functionality a year into it's life.

play go is also another feature built in and designed to let you play games faster...

to me it just seems that they are a lot more focused on gaming part, but we all know that.

So PlayGo shows they are focused more on gaming... but downloading games is irrelevant? Friend notifications aren't a gaming function? Suspend/Resume isn't a gaming function?

It's not like we're using "Send HDMI-IN to Smartglass" as comparison points here.

both consoles have this feature btw (and both have had it since launch)

You didn't answer my question, but its ok.

also are you saying that MS is better because they update OS more frequently?! based on this, Sony (PS3 era) must have been the best in the world because they used to roll updates bi-weekly.

The difference being that Microsoft isn't doing "system stability" firmware updates every month, like Sony keeps doing with their devices, but you already knew that.

You cannot be this dense. I wasn't talking about Microsoft putting out these same features verbatim, I meant that they put out these types of updates with similar amounts of new features twelve times a year instead of one.

they are just PR's their wares better... they really do mention the littles things in monthly updats while Sony only puts large updates on their list. They should literally list every single feature change.

nope... just check install time differences between the consoles, they are quite huge.

I already know the install times on xbox are terrible (I have both consoles) but it has nothing to do with the fact that both consoles let you play games before they finish installing (what playgo does)

So it's confirmed that you can copy mp3s to the PS4 via usb? Because from the OP, it reads like all you can do is play it back from the usb.

it says you cannot

* User can play music files stored inside USB storage but cannot copy music files to PS4 HDD. This application cannot be used at the same time with Music Unlimited. USB Music Player will appear once USB storage is inserted, and will disappear once USB storage is removed.

Just a few thoughts:

It's not great that you can't just copy over the music but hopefully with DLNA you can just stream it from a device, that would be useful.

PS4’s Content Area now shows 15 of a player’s most used apps or games. What's the content area?

So I'm assuming we can't stream music from usb into a game like The Show or WWE. That's so lame.

I really wish Sony stopped fucking saving everything for one giant firmware. It is annoying.

Work on the big stuff sure, but small shit that can be easily fixed should be released once a month like the Xbone. I mean, we are STILL waiting to pause downloads. I would laugh if that still wasn't in there.

PSP PS3 all over again. Starting poorly, terrible communication and slowly getting better, but I would have expected the PS4 to be at least as feature rich as the PS3 and a little bit extra. Standard theme of the PS3 (colours depending on date and time) is still so nice to look at.

I'd also hoped for a folder system to put away all the useless crap in that line of stuff I never use. You can hate me but I still think the XMB is a nice ui, it was much better when uncluttered though. Sony has zero understanding how to design something nice software wise and IF they have a form/ design language they do really EVERYTHING to mess it up.

The currently endless content bar on the home screen. Basically they are doing what I have been suggesting since launch. Limit the number of items that shows up on the content bar, because it's insanely long, and then dump everything else into the Library. It sounds from their wording like they will even be putting disc based games into the Library, which they would absolutely need to do for this to work. On top of that they are adding sorting options so that the Library is actually usable and not a complete mess.

Finally a substantial update!
Too bad for the lack of USB video playback (other than music).
Also if I'm reading correctly now only the 15 most used/recent games/apps will be displayed on the UI while the rest will go in the library folder which will be indexed in different ways.
Not exactly like folders, but it will be a nice improvement to get rid of the chaos on the main interface.

So is not including folders or any way to customize your games library a "design choice"? Because I refuse to believe it's that hard to implement a folder or customizable organization system (similar to Steam).

It's taken this long for sorting...and even that feature is half-baked considering it's only local sorting. There's still no sorting for the download list (sigh). Sony's programming interns can't implement folders just yet! Maybe Holiday 2015!

About time hope this drops soon

In coming months they say.

Joyous. I own a Ps4. I like my Ps4. But compared to MS they suck at communication. I see the October Xbone update. I see a healthy feature set. I see a preview programme completed. I see Major Nelson reaching out.

I come here. I see 'soon'. I see features missing that the competion has. I see no fire in Sonys PR manner. Theyre selling sure, but complacancy is creeping here and I do not like it.

This goes both ways. Interactive streaming, remote play, share play, PSNow. Certainly remote play and share play are both much more innovative and exciting than folders or whatever.

yes it does... Sony's system lets you play game much sooner - same goes for installing games as well, it is basically the same system.

Add to Library is brilliant.

I like the sounds of the new Library and Content Area redesign. I hope the Library has a lot of sorting and filtering options.

A REAL shame there are no custom wallpapers. I hope there are several themes that are free.

Oh, sweet. That works for me then. Hopefully they implement that feature into WWE if Sony wasn't already working with them on it.

I'm confirming with a contact if they knew about this update and if it's one of the reasons the current gen version was pushed back (or if it's going to be supported at all).

Remote Play works on Vita, PSTV and Z3, Z3c, Z3C tablet.... so it works with 2 phones, tablet, TV streamer as well as Vita.

So hardly something niche... imho, it is huge feature.

As to the share play, it is also huge - you can borrow your friends and family your games to play for 60 minutes at a time.

Those two things are really the next gen features of PS4. Something that was not possible before and is possible now.

Wtf, no suspend/resume, Dlna, friend online notification, or pausing downloads? Weak. And am I reading that correctly, you can't play music off of the hard drive, just a USB stick? Laughable at this point.

Pretty good update but what's the issue with friend notifications? Seems awfully strange not to have this built in. Why can't we put music on the hard drive, another weird decision.
