PS4 System Software Preview – USB Music Player, New Home Screen Colors, More

Just because things are in folders doesn't mean you still couldn't have a global search feature. It already does this with voice commands on PS4, XB1.

......I can't even believe I have to justify a system having folders option.

Having a global search option--which requires people to remember every purchase they've made--doesn't fix the issue of visibility.

My Vita has a 64GB card and stuff organized into genre-related folders, and, despite the device's relatively young age, I still forget about much of the content I have on it. Same scenario with my PS3, except worse b/c it's over 7 years old--some of my genre-related folders have more than 20 entries in them, and the PS3 only creates icons for PSN content.

I'm not opposed to having a global search feature, accompanied with voice commands; but I honestly don't think that using folders for organization is the best option, especially on a device that has tons of storage and a lifespan of 5+ years. A "frequently used" content area combined with a Library area that has powerful sorting options and a stream-lined interface (aka. NOT GIANT EMPTY BOXES WITH TINY ICONS (like it is now) seems optimal for a console experience.

Oh, and I also think that the PS4 needs the ability to selectively delete content per game; for example: if I want to delete the Killzone Shadowfall install file, but leave the GB's worth of patches on the HDD so I don't have to download them all again next time I go to re-install the game.

This would be incredible.

THIS SO MUCH.

I just hit 450gb and had to start deleting stuff, and my slow intarwebs make this a big issue.

Music while gaming! That's all I wanted

Now we're talking!

We can put this image to rest, finally

I wonder if the desire to reduce the OS footprint is the reason behind the delay of some of the more significant features that were promised. I don't know anything about what the requirements are for something like suspend/resume, DLNA, etc.

USB thing is kinda weird, but after a quick search on Amazon, I found that they are dirt fucking cheap.

Less than 20 bucks for a 32GB. Daaaaamnnnnn.

I'd like to think that online friend notifications will be in the update but weren't highlighted because it's not a huge feature and they're probably embarrassed it wasn't in there since launch. I'd like to think that. But this is Sony so I'm assuming we won't be seeing them any time soon
y
.

I'm hoping for this too. It notifies us when a friend enters a party so I'm assuming this should be a minor tweak. Sony can handle that...right?

Hopefully once they get this share play bullshit outta the way, they can finally have their programmers focus on quality of life updates.

Their priorities are completely fucked up over there.

They just don't get it, and it's gonna be an entire year again before they even begin working on the basic fundamentals.

Whatever.

If 2.0 works the same way as the current FW... You can't. Currently all installed games are on your ribbon, no matter what account they are from..Last active are also account based, So activating it on your second account, does not move it up the list in your main account. Basically you would be limited to 15 digital titles outside of your main account.

That would be a pretty serious oversight. Let's hope they took measures to prevent this.

I pretty jump to games/apps using the voice control feature as I used to game using Pulse Elite and recently using A50s.

So actually that way is more faster than bringing up the search bar and typing stuff in.

It would also been awesome if Xperia devices could wirelessly connect and stream music and stuff, my Z2 thirsts for some PS4 action.

Yeah I don't think the ps4 will ever be as complete as the ps3

I didn't think the PS3 would ever have a functioning PSN store in 2007. Granted it still runs like shit, but it does the job and a lot has changed for the better.

I agree, but that's because they will never put in some of the things that created vulnerabilities, like Linux dual boot and USB openness. We already see it in that universal usb hardware such as steering wheels need actual chips to work now, rather than being plug and play.

PS3 had this for many games. 1 File for the disc install, 1 file for all the updates.

I guess with full installs, now patches might actually replace files though?

Would be really great because of how fast the PS4 allows you to play a game while installing the 50 gb of the disc in the background.

It's a music player...

basically nullifying the ability to copy music files to the PS4 hard drive? (like on the PS3)

Well...I am still happy music can be played from the USB. I would just like to copy movies/songs onto the hard drive......or maybe an external would solve that (light bulb moment)

Was going to pick a new USB stick up for this. Well that and the fact that the one I have is ancient.

Any restrictions I should know about when shopping around or will any USB drive work?

They might launch it along side GTA V o.o that be cool.
If PSN works and the update rolls out smoothly. Otherwise it'll just be the next clusterfuck.

I don't understand why Sony just can't make tabs? Everything having their own tab would be so much better. Even if the list of games is only 15 now it's still dumb. You can tell Sony has no idea how to design a UI that they decided to throw everything on one row.

Totally agree. It's way to easy to loose stuff in folders.

Give us a incredible sorting function instead.

How many USB ports to they think my PS4 has?

Actually sounds like a fairly decent update. Myself I'm only looking for the following:
  • full control of download with ability to pause and re-order - still waiting!
  • better control of my games library - sounds like its sorta coming

Outside that themes/colours is okay but I doubt I'll use the rest. I've gone full retro and literally use my console for nothing but playing games: no media usage at all.

Sounds pretty good so far. Hope to pause downloads as well and see friends come online.
But I really like we are getting mp3 playback. Been looking forward to that in some games.

Can always connect a USB hub to it. I personally wouldn't, too much clutter and cables for my taste, but you could. And actually, I would, if there was a USB port in the back of the system. Can't have been that much more expensive to just add another port to the back right?
