So if I bought it on Steam to begin with I'm ok to go, right? All the transferring and whatnot must be done only with physical copies of the game?

What is the deal with this token system of getting a Steam copy of Dark Souls? Or is that just for the guys who bought a retail copy?

Edit - nevermind, I get it - Tokens are for GFWL users who got the game via that. Normal auto conversion for steam users

I'm glad there are people on this thread who will get to experience Dark Souls now they don't have to deal with GFWL. It's my favourite game of all time.

Remember to read item descriptions!

took me HOURS to get Dark Souls working recently, even with no online. And then GFWL crashed on me repeatedly.

fuck it. So happy I can play through it again without issues. Unless if they block DSfix, and then there will be issues.

Happy for everyone that will get to play this title on Steam. Oddly, GFWL always worked for me while playing DS, and even when it didn't work on another title called Dirt 3, the workarounds were always simple.

Still, Steam Achievements yeeeeaaaahhhh!!!

This. A friend of mine tried for months to play it and GFWL wouldn't let him, kept spamming network errors. He finally figured that the problem was due to the special characters he used in his password, but I'm not sure he want to play Dark Souls anymore.

(there should be a thread here for telling GFWL horror stories)

Well now I know when I'll be re-playing. And it's still sorta unbelievable that they're finally going for it. All those days of failed summons are behind us now. Time to rekindle the flames.

This is terrific news, I think it's one of the best games ever made so it's nice to have a copy of it on Steam that (fingers-crossed) will be around for a very long time.

Not only are they going to migrate but everything will be salvaged? Praise the sun indeed.

THO EXTHITED for summons to work, man, soloing stuff looks like no fun compared to having friends. I'm a lonely hollow soul, just want some company...

So I bought dark souls on steam a few months ago and I straight up can't start it. Just gives me an error. Will this fix it?

I'm not really understanding how this "redeem token" thing is supposed to work. I have Dark Souls on Steam. Will it transfer directly from GFWL to Steamworks when Namco Bandai presses the button, like it happened with Arkham City? Or will I have to retrieve my GFWL CD-Key to get a Steamworks-compatible one?

So if we bought Dark Souls on Steam nothing further is needed from us right?

If you have saves or achievements you want to tranfer just keep an eye out into November, the window to transfer that stuff to Steamworks will be limited. If you don't care then no, you don't have to do anything.

I just realized I never played a pure DEX build in the 400 hours I played DaS1. I guess I can try that when the update hits.

Balder Side Sword or Uchi, then maybe Furysword. A bonus is that longbow damage goes through the roof with a dex build.

I've been planning on going a full Dex uchi build for months. I've never done a dex build either.

Yes, I've been patiently waiting the removal of GFWL for a long time.

So does this mean the multiplayer will actually work?!?!

Hopefully they go full Steamworks with the knowledge they gained from Dark Souls 2.

Looks like I have an excuse to replay the game again.

You know, I was thinking about this last night. I'm glad the save files are converting over, but even if they weren't and I had to start a new game from scratch I'd still be excited for the gutting of GFWL. Steam achievements and multiplayer support would be worth losing my save, and the game is so God Damned Good that I plan on playing it through again many times anyway.

Now if I could only get both Dirt 1 & 2 off of GFWL....

So Dark Souls is finally playable on Steam, looking forward to play my unusable copy with no saving that sat in my library for nearly 2 years.

I'm starting from scratch anyway, as I played it on the PS3 and bought a physical copy of the PC version for cheap (mainly for the extras) but left it on the side.

Games for Windows Live users will be able to redeem their Games for Windows Live Tokens on Steam to get Dark Souls: Prepare to Die Edition at no additional cost. (To find your Games for Windows Live Token, please head to the support webpage

Wait, do I need a GFWL token to get the non GFWL version off Steam?? I never signed up for GFWL but I have the copy with GFWL. Can I not just download the updated version from my library come november and not deal with that bullshit anymore?

Those are for people who own the game on GFWL and haven't activated the key for whatever reason.

Yeeeeeeesssssss!

I've been playing through the game yet again, and I can't summon anyone. I built a character entirely around the idea of playing as a healer, and have had to change my playstyle to a more offensive cleric just because of that. I can be summoned for some reason, but not the other way around.

Hopefully this won't be as bad as the Street Fighter conversion. Single handedly killed one of my favorite games with that transition.

Finally I can leave my mark outside the Ornstein and Smough room, and hopefully help some poor souls. Could never get online before.

Seems that the conversion is handled by the same people who did the Steamworks conversion of Ace Combat Assault Horizon Enhanced Edition. (modus operandi: time window for transfer saves, its the same as Ace Combat) so hopefuly would be good.
for one, i was able to play Ace Combat online only after they converted it to Steamworks.

Good news. Now I'll be able to play it finally. GFWL is literally the only reason I haven't bought it. (Although I didn't like Demons Souls much...)

You mean I'll actually be able to summon other players in Dark Souls now? You mean I can actually enjoy the multiplayer features of this game, years after release? Namco Bandai have succeeded Gwyn and held off the Age of Dark - confirmed.

I have a lot of reasons to get back to Dark Souls. I never played as magic or strength builds. I never fought Artorias or did any of the DLC stuff. So yeah...I guess I won't be playing any new video games for a while.
