So why doesn't Sony advertise their resolution advantage?

Because resolution advantage and resistance to forced parity doesn't need marketing. It's a matter of consumer rights and it will eventually reach the people. Did Rosa Parks need marketing when she fought for the rights of the people? No, just like the PS4 won't need marketing for fighting opressing resolution parity.

Setting aside how stupid the comparison is, Rosa Parks did need marketing.

She was bailed out of jail by the NAACP, who then leveraged a local women's organization to print out flyers to organize the Montgomery Bus Boycotts, which were distributed to established black churches. The organization that was formed in response then elected a local preacher (Martin someone, anyone else know what I'm talking about?) All of these organizations were savvy and understood how to coordinate people, get attention, and focus on the issues. Exactly what marketing is.

A similar story exists for any heroes you think exist. They all needed a support structure, they all needed to "sell" their story, to make the public aware.

Because then it just comes back to bite them in the ass on titles they don't meet those standards on.

If you're going to brag about something, you need to be consistent with it.

People seem to think 1080p and 60fps means next gen.....reality is its simply more pixels moving fast

If the game plays the same it makes no fucking difference Imo

To me next gen means more multiplayer players in a game. ....larger more interactive world's and smarter Ai

Forza 5 would probably be a game I'd pin as a good representation of what a next gen game is....more specifically the way it handles the drivatars and downloads how real people play

This is a game that feels like you are racing real people.

Having a 64 player game of battlefield 4 on a large open map is also another great thing next gen has bought us

This is the sort of stuff people should be commending on ...not this 1080p/60fps or bust shit

Aaron... Aaron is that you?!

99.9% of console owners don't give a shit about the difference between 900 and 1080p.

How does the saying go

..you can beat a pigeon playing chess but in the end they well knock over all the pieces and shit allover the board like they are superior

The people that believe it matters have already made their minds up...where as most others simply enjoy the ride ....The assasins creed thread a few weeks ago is what we have to look foward too.

I'm pretty sure no one gives a shit. You don't know how many times I've seen someone watching tv, not on a HD channel and in the wrong format.

They had a successful reveal campaign last year leading to launch than the people who are interested in this are already in the know.

And this is a such a big group that newcomers who like to learn more about this in the future have no difficulty in stumbling on what they want.

Simply because the games it applies to are not their games to put stickers on.

The reason companies like Activision don't do this should be obvious.

Don't need to.

Word of mouth.
My cousin who is one of the most casual gamers I know (buys a game maybe once every couple years for his 360) even heard about PS4 'having better graphics'.

I found out when he was over at my house to play destiny on my X1, and made a comment "man, I wish we could see how this looks on PS4"

I asked him why, and he told me that he had heard that "PS4 has better graphics".

I can't help but laugh as people saying that the mainstream doesn't care at all.

I suppose all of those X1 policies that MS tried to implement before all those 180s are the result of only the 0.01% of people complaining right?

I think that the power difference is one of the strongests unique selling propositions the PS4 has, and they don't really need to educate consumers about why, they just need to put it out there and let it be known.

Those who don't care much about the stuff will probably still have it in top of mind when they decide to purchase a system over the other.

There must be a reason why Sony doesn't bother with it and I'm pretty sure it isn't because "most people don't care".

Because the vast majority of normal people cant see the difference between 900p and 1080p.

Hell, SIGGRAPH doesn't even care. Why would J6P?

Microsoft already gave Sony the ball. All Sony has to do for the next 6 or 7 years is not drop it.

SIGGRAPH doesn't care because the resolution was a constraint of the hardware and they only care about the software side of things. Ryse easily deserved to win that award based on that criteria.

Ehhh, it's kind of true. I don't think my brother or friends even knows what a "p" is, let alone how many are showing on their TVs.

Not caring /= inability to see the difference

I was able to notice after the AC black flag patch. It was night and day. Did I cry or try to pluck my eyes out when playing it before the patch? No.

As long as the game has a decent AA solution, and doesn't rely on fine details to assist in gameplay, then it really isn't a big deal.

Not resolution. Push the Most Powerful Console line and it will pay off in numbers.

For all the say that people don't care, I'd say it would be effective.

As long as they have the small print after the ad. MS could run this ad too.

*Not all games are native 1080p, but will be upscaled.

The general public already seems to understand the PS4 has better performance stats, so really there's no need to advertise that fact.

Hi.

this.

and even worse, outside of forums, no one give a shit about 60 fps :(
back then between 720p and 1080p yes....
but now you cant see the difference between 900p and 1080p...

none of my friends know what 60 fps but they do know what 1080p is but it has zero effect on what they buy as far as i know most of those guys are into sport games/fps games wrestling games

Because it's a dumb thing to advertise...Then again a lot of those Samsung/MS attack ads on Apple are hilarious

So I guess you don't have a source and you're just talking out of your ass anecdotally.

I'll assume you're not being facetious or disingenuous for a second.

You can honestly tell me with a straight face, that you could sit most people down in front of a decent quality TV, start playing Ryse and that person would instantly be able to tell you its not 1080p?

Why would Sony impose such a constraint on developers? The very people who pour their hearts into games that inevitably bolster the library of Sony's system. Already there are sub 1080p games, and it's because of developer limitations. Sony would only be hurting them.

Because nobody outside forums where you debate the point/know the answer gives a shit?

Wrong. People may not be knowledgeable on the specifics of resolutions, but many people do know that the PS4 is "better." They may not know exactly why it's better, but the narrative has already been set. It was the same thing with the 360.

People do care. Just like people care when it comes to TVs, phones, etc.

No one gives a shit. Besides, most people dont go on forums and worry about resolution. They care about playing the game and doing what the have to do afterwards.

I can't help but laugh as people saying that the mainstream doesn't care at all.

I suppose all of those X1 policies that MS tried to implement before all those 180s are the result of only the 0.01% of people complaining right?

When a person walks into a store and looks at both machines they'll definitely notice that one requires check via the internet every 24 hours to be able to play your games, that you can only sell them off at selected stores, etc.

On the other hand the resolution thing (which isn't applicable to every single game) seems like a technical details list item that you might find on the back of the box. The sort of thing that many people simply skim over or don't consider much when deciding which brand they want to go with.

One impacts the way you buy and play games greatly the other doesn't.

I personally don't like the overwhelming amount of attention that is already given by the gaming enthusiast crowd, so I don't want it to become a main selling point to the general masses. Don't get me wrong, I don't mind the occasional barb at press events or during interviews, but directly advertising specs in such a manner would send a poor message in my opinion. Talk about the games, the developers, the social features, etc. I can even live with a vague "best place to play multiplatform games."

This fascination with specs needs to stop.

People do 'gives a shit'. Everything stated here is true. The perception is out there already that the PS4 is better. Sony was the first out of the gate this time, in a position that they had hoped to be before releasing The Cell.

This being said, it is their fight to lose, and MS has come back swinging.

They have though:

It's just kind of backfired at some points:

I can't help but laugh as people saying that the mainstream doesn't care at all.
Mainstream doesn't care. You honestly think most people who buy consoles go to Neogaf and read IGN every day? They go with games or price points or some other reason.

Stronger graphics don't make a system. If that were the case Xbox/Gamecube should have sold more then the PS2. And the N64 would've outsold the PS. And PS3 would've outsold the wii.

Graphics are a factor, but they have very little influence in comparison to other aspects.

It's already common knowledge that PS4 is better hardware. No need to advertise specifics that are more or less covered by "most powerful console ever" that they trot out occasionally.

lol at "can't tell difference between 900p and 1080p" posts though.

Because nobody outside forums where you debate the point/know the answer gives a shit?

First post mostly nails it (I wouldn't say "nobody," but close enough).

Also the fact that not all PS4 games are native 1080p, and some XB1 games are native 1080p.

Too many asterisks and footnotes go along with the whole debate.

The people that would care know already.

Yup. It's extremely simple. Anyone who makes their purchasing decisions based on that factor is already acutely aware. Along with the fact that, believe it or not, that group isn't nearly as large as people think anyway. Slapping "1080p, only on PS4" onto ads isn't going to suddenly change up multiplatform sales split by a huge margin.

I'll assume you're not being facetious or disingenuous for a second.

You can honestly tell me with a straight face, that you could sit most people down in front of a decent quality TV, start playing Ryse and that person would instantly be able to tell you its not 1080p?

There's is no 1080p version of Ryse so how are going to make comparison between 900p and 1080p?

Yes knowing the resolution is hard, very few can extract that info from footage/screenshots and usually done by special method (Pixel counting) that takes time and effort, but that's not what we're arguing about whether people can or can not know the the exact resolution; we're talking about whether people can see the difference when comparing different resolutions.

You said "majority of normal people cant see the difference between 900p and 1080p.", and I'm pretty sure when presenting a 900p footage and 1080p footage of games to people, most people will notice the difference.
