Whenever I read someone referring to girls and women as FEMALES (outside of a medical context) I immediately get creeped out. In this case it was appropriate, but is this just more of an american way of talking that I don't get or what?

It's not creepy but it's often used to demean/disrespect the female gender. I hate the usage of it as well.

Almost. My girlfriend and I were visiting her home and apparently she walked in on her little sister[19] playing with herself to porn in the basement. The sister was very embarrassed but then my gf said not to worry and that she did it too and showed her favourite sites, clips.

Could've been me that walked in. I wonder what would've happened.

Op confirmed a creepy misogynist.

To be fair, a lot of guys don't know any better. They're shown that it's normal when in reality, it is used because of traditional ideals that men should respect women/not hit girls/etc, so instead of humanize by referring to women as women, female (gender) is somehow not worthy of respect.

It's ridiculous, but that's pretty much the root of it.

I have almost been caught masturbating to porn by my husband. It appears the reflexes in my left wrist are fast enough to whip the screen of my phone down on my chest before detection though.

Wait what? What dictionary provided this as as answer? I though female could be used interchangibly with woman/women?

Everybody entitled to their own opinions about how they use words but personally I don't see anything wrong with using 'female'.

"Bitch" is demeaning and disrespectful so technically its almost like you're lumping them in the same category.

Also, last time I called a woman a 'female', I didn't get cursed out/slapped/called a misogynist

Lol believe me it's way more obvious than you think. Your husband is being polite and probably doesn't care.

I doubt when he saw you a second later he though "Wow, she's red in the cheeks and looks like a deer in the headlights. That must have been one awesome gaf thread." :p

Female is code-word for [woman that refuses to have sex with me and is a feminazi] just as thug is code-word for "nigger".
It doesn't matter whether or not you think of female & thug in this manner, as clearly some people do - and language is shaped by all its users.
Oh. I don't mean to prod but that can't be good for the marriage, at least on the intimacy side of things. You aren't worried that she may cheat? It kinda sounds like you are indifferent about how she feels about "marital relations"
What? Do you actually think that if a woman masturbates, that means she's going to have an affair?

Masturbation in a relationship is fine, if it doesn't interfere with sex.

It's a pretty safe assumption that a significant number of males enjoy two beautiful women having sex with each other, yes. That's not to say it's the most popular type of porn out there, but it's very common.

Like I said its all in the personal usage. My point i'm trying to make is this. To some female might be disrespectful and demeaning, but you take a word like "bitch" and its almost universally accepted as being disrespectful/demeaning.

I understand some folks here on GAF may have a problem with it but the rest of the world may not agree, so its not fair to assume that how you personally feel about the context of the word is just "what it is" cause it isn't. Some women take offense to being called female. Others don't. But MOST, if not all will take offense to "bitch". So its not the same effect and you can't just place 'female' next to it and let that same feeling apply. That's all i'm saying. Maybe its a culture/race thing (yes I'm black if it isn't obvious)

On a side note, to all the women participating in this thread or lurking, I SINCERELY apologize if my using 'female' seems derogatory in ANY way. My personal context of the world does not deem it as such.

I'd love to catch my female wife masterbating to porn as I walked in. I'd plow right into that pussy. That's makes me a creepy sexist racist right GAF?

Bitch is female dog. Someone figured out a way to still disrespect women without cursing is all.

And like many young men aren't aware how disrespectful it is, many women aren't as well. They will even use the term themselves. That doesn't make it any less disrespectful and ignorant.

It isn't an opinion, this is something many are confronting because it is used to disregard women as having problems solely because we are female (thus different from males and more reason to detach from us).

I would say yes. Obviously I am not speaking in absolutes. But I would say it is at least a very common trait to like lesbian sex.

Thats interesting.

I've got a lot of porn on the old external hard drives but I don't think I have any lesbian scenes. Never really thought of it honestly...

When I had a female roommate she would masturbate quite often. We used to sleep in the same room and she would do it while I was sleeping. I woke up one time and caught her, she just threw some headphones on my head and told me to turn around =

After that she would do it while I was in the shower... But she made no attempt to be quiet about it.

....then to further rub it in, her and her gf made a video using my webcam and my PC. She never deleted the file.

Using a clinical term in a non-clinical way is going to make people confused.

It seems so. I'm stepping back from the 'female' debate. Lots of misunderstanding going on on my end and those involved. Also, debating it over the internet doesn't help...hella easy to get the intentions mixed up or confused. Let's move on, ladies/gents.

The best explanation. Thank you. I've often tried to explain this to others and it always flies right over- without being understood.

Sounds like a cool. Thing though. I envision catch a nice lady in the act, only to be met with a "Heyyyy big boy..."

Totally wouldn't go down like that tho.

This thread is just strange. Ditto on the weird usage of 'female'. Are we talking about animals or...?

Heterosexual men typically find lesbian sex pretty hot. Do heterosexual women typically find homosexual male sex hot too?
...I have also wondered this.

Yeah, we were actually talking with our psychologist about this last week, and he said that we really should go to a doctor and get various things checked out on my end of things, to see if there's anything medically going on that's causing an issue.

With all of my other health problems, it's been pretty low on my list of stuff to deal with. But, I suppose I should.

I'll have to tell her to thank you <3

Yeah, with other serious medical issues I can understand it being lower on the priority list. The power of hormones is really fascinating stuff, though. If you're curious, check out the very good This American Life episode on testosterone. If I recall correctly, at one point a man who develops low test levels describes how he would wake up and just stare indifferently at the wall of his bedroom for hours. It's not just about sex at all, but drive in all aspects of life. Good luck with everything.

I had no idea "female" was a derogatory term. I guess we have to blame the misogynistic assholes but never thought of it like that. I dont think you should compare the N word to the word "female" though as its not really a form of racism.

Cannot say female/male is a derogatory term, but one could argue it's somewhat dehumanizing. More categorical and clinical in my opinion.

Yeah, I feel like I had pretty good (not great, but decent enough) drive and motivation before all of the other health problems, so I'm sure there are a variety of factors going on. That certainly could be one of them though.
Thanks though, I appreciate it.

Depends how it is used. If referring to men as males and women, females, it's fairly normal. But when used in most other circumstance, it seems more like alienating the female gender because of some estrogen vs testosterone thing. But essentially, that's what it comes down to. Women are some strange, weird species that are different and beneath men so usage of female has gone rampant.

The comparison to the n word is wrong. It's closer to calling women bitch (female dog), the source of its usage to begin with.

I just use it in most situations where neither "woman" nor "girl" is appropriate--for example because "female characters" is more precisely what I may mean because "woman" would be odd to apply to Red Riding Hood and "girl" is certainly not appropriate to apply to Samus Aran. I think people go a bit too far in finding it "derogatory" but it certainly depends on context. I would probably use "woman" in the thread title...well, if I were to post such a thread which I doubt.
