I feel this is a good call.
Most consumers buy a console to play third party titles these days, since over the past eight years they've shifted to being by and far the biggest sellers across the board.
Microsoft has a problem in that their system is worse at playing third party games, so if the price is more or even equal, it's seen as the worse value.
If they can actually position themselves as ~$100 less (be it through value proposition or raw price difference) than the PS4 with holiday sales, that starts becoming a lot more attractive offer for value minded customers in the same way a lot of people still bought the iPad 2 when the iPad 4 was out to save $100.
They also have a nice value bundle in the form of the MCC that similarly would let a parent get their kid a console and 5-6 games (whatever is bundled plus MCC) for a cheap price, since the value end of the market also responds well to value adds and collections, and this is a notably impressive collection.
