you were expecting(hoping) the monster would be OP, its no wonder you found it underwhelming. honestly i'll have to agree with some of the other posters here, in that the monster is terrifying in the right hands

(the following is not directed at you just sharing my experience with the alpha and my first match)

Finally got to try the beta today and in my first match i was the monster, i didn't know what the hell i was doing in the first few minutes though admittedly that little intro did help. its safe to say that when the hunters found me they quickly proceeded to place an arena trap and took down over half my health without me so much as getting a hit on any of them. after the arena trap went down i somehow managed to escape and recoup. i scrounged around for kills on animals and evolved to level two while getting a hang of the controls.

the next time they found me they went with the same strategy of dropping the arena trap and tranquilizing me right at the start of the encounter. i was ready for it this time though. they found me on my terms this time and i was expecting the arena trap and the tranqs, so i had vantage on them and a great position. i took down the medic first then the trapper. the remainder fell easily. these guys were high level as well, i guess after seeing i was level 1 and destroying me in the first encounter they let their guard down and completely underestimated me giving me a huge advantage.

i had so much fun with the alpha tonight and im sold on the game.
 
Well just had a 18 minute match and I won as a goliath. Even winning I feel like the humans are the monsters in this game. I shouldn't be running around scared shitless trying to eat stuff to feel like I'm a threat, while some bloodthirsty assholes are chasing me down. Feel like it should be the other way around :(

Also anyone find themselves dropping outta sneak for no reason? Not sure how that was happening.

Also what's the point of destroying the power core thing? I got lvl 3 and was banging on that thing and it barely took any damage.

Not really considering each monster has 3 abilities and a melee compared to L4D's 5 monsters with 1 abilty and melee, it's plenty of content IMO. These monsters are supposed to have multiple layers of depth as you learn each map/gamemode, and face different combinations of hunters as well.
 
Another 5 minute match as the kraken. I have yet to see level 3 without killing them all, hahaha.

This isn't anything remotely new.

Battlefield 3/4 and Borderlands 2 had the exact same thing and virtually nobody was arguing that it ruined the core gameplay despite having new weapons and characters. I don't see why Evolve should be held to a different standard. I also don't see how giving something away for free (which would other wise cost money) is considered a bad thing. If you want to take the risk and preorder, you get rewarded in a totally non scummy way (you get DLC which otherwise would have cost you money) and if you don't want to take that risk then don't preorder and have a content complete game.

I don't see why just because some people took a risk and preorder that somehow entitles the people who didn't take that risk to the exact same post-launch content for the exact same price.
 
Been wiping teams left and right as Goliath. Get full armor, turn around, find someone out of position, go ham, run away and evolve, repeat!

First off you have no indication when the first DLC hits. It could be weeks or it could be months. Saying its happening soon is you completely talking out of your ass. Also, how far along in production is this monster. Is he just a concept art right now? Or how about a rough model? What about animations? Have they done balance testing? What about bug testing? No one but Turtle Rock knows. Simply saying that we have DLC planned isn't a Indication as to how far along that DLC is.

Idealistically preorders wouldn't be a thing but we live in reality. I would rather have developers give players additional post-launch content rather than cut content from the game itself.

Well I didn't buy Battlefield 3/4 or Borderlands 2, because I vote with my wallet, and PC has plenty of other games I can play.

Right, one of those people who think that developers should be paid for their work. Keep in mind that we're not talking about bug fixes and balance patches (which of course should be free). We're talking about DLC, which under no obligation has to be free. So i'll be here when you have something of substance to add rather than leave a snarky comment.
 
ps4 ALPHA still is not up, did they postpone it indefinably? if it comes next week i wont be able to play it since im gonna be all over AW.
 
Unlocked Griffin finally, I think he's more up my alley compared to Maggie. Really like being able to physically shoot and pull with the harpoon, actually managed to rip a Goliath right back into a missile strike. Sound spikes are neat, didn't realize they could be destroyed by wildlife though.

Yeah, it's postponed until they can figure out what was wrong. There's no ETA on anything, I guess they'll just have an update when they're ready.

Wow are you off base here, Turtle Rock isn't an indie studio. They make salary and bonuses most likely. They don't make money based on the games sales. In this case Valve does. They just get to keep their jobs.

I'm well aware of how the publisher developer dichotomy works.

2K makes money off their game sales and they sign Turtle Rock's checks. Game sales directly effect Turtle Rock's ability to find work.

It's doesn't matter how big the developer is or how the money is distributed. They produced content that 2K funded and they should get paid for that. Just because they're a big developer, doesn't mean that because they should make all their DLC free. 2K spent money making DLC and it shouldn't be expected for them to give it away for free (unless it is balance patches and bug updates which of course should be free).
 
Only played one game, performance wasn't great on a 3570K @4.4GHz and a GTX 670 2GB, wildly goes between 38 - 55fps.

Turned down the graphics quality from High to medium but haven't tried it yet but hopefully get things closer to 60 most of the time. Also, even though Vsync is off, the game seems to be capped at 60fps and never goes above.

It's your VRAM. I got a 770 with 2GB and if I set it higher than medium the game runs at 60 but keeps dropping down because my VRAM is full and needs to dump. Once you go to medium the game sits at 60 unless you got like firebreath+bombard+some other crazy stuff all going on at the same time.

Btw I can't really understand how people think the monster is underpowered. You can do such hilarious sneak attacks on people and you are so ridiculously mobile. So many monsters just try to run away all the time and get themselves into this "oh no the hunters are coming oh no!" mentality. I often just sneak somewhere and the hunters run right past me, then I either use a sneak attack on one of them basically insta downing him or I use the leap attack from above somewhere or i eat all the food in the place they just came from.

Sneaking and leaping from place to place are SO important in keeping the hunters away.

This isn't an issue of paying for DLC. It's being forced to pay to get a piece of content that's free to everyone who pre-orders the game. But it's not the typical skins or early game DLC weapon. It's a relatively large part of the game, most other games you can complete and the pre-order DLC rarely affects it. This time, it's a full blown character, literally the equivalent of Super Smash Bro's having 5 extra characters (I say 5 due to the fact there's only 3 monsters) free to people who pre-order the game. It wouldn't bother you?

Also started fighting more skilled Kraken players, unreal, I was wrong about how he was slower than the goliath. He has a sprint and dash jump thing too. Nothing besides the limited amount of traps you can set will allow hunters to catch the monster if he's a decent player. If that monster is the Kraken he pretty much avoids your traps just by flying anyways.

Fair enough but he's still incredibly powerful level 2 and up. I think a big problem is the Kraken is able to move while he's using that lightning storm attack. He should have to be static, or have a drastic movement speed penalty during it.
 
I've fought a couple more Krakens and see some of his weaknesses, but it's still reliant on a few things. Jetpack dodges are huge since his attacks are fairly slow, but I feel like I'm always starved for fuel in this game so it's easy to run out if he keeps targetting you and those attacks hurt so damn much. It feels harder to actually chase him too.

But I do agree with what was said before in that I don't think any of the first group of Hunters are well suited to fight him, aside from Val. Land mines, orbital strike, and harpoon traps are all ground/movement based. Daisy from my experience gets super confused trying to track him. Griffin is able to mess with his flying and let the team focus on him more, and sound spikes help as I find it really easy to lose track of where he goes. It's really easy for a dome to backfire as it's hard to just get a spot where the Kraken really feels trapped and can't turn the surroundings into an advantage, though.

It's cause the monster here and the hunters are big ol punching bags. lots of health and stuff.

in Hidden you can get instagibbed out of nowhere but the Hidden himself is pretty vulnerable too and can get taken down in 2 seconds by a competent soldier.

That's just a rumor, pretty sure the devs shot it down. They said it would be too hard to implement it.

This game feels like a compromise between 2 different design directions, as if some people on the team wanted to make a more deliberately paced, ground level stalk-through-the-underbrush experience; and others wanted a fast paced high mobility vertical throwback to UT-Quake era arena shooters with an asymmetrical twist. I'm not sure (obviously the game's not out yet) but from the maps and classes available in this alpha I think going full bore in either direction would be more fun/interesting to me than what's actually here.
 
Turtle rock should of gotton some rights to Predator, made a Predator vs Marines game. This sorta game would of been the perfect vehicle for that, especially the maps.

Non new IP's are extremely limiting on what you can do because it's an established fiction.
 
To folks having played the alpha on both XONE and PC, to what graphics setting is XONE comparable on PC? High?

I have to play it on the lowest settings on my PC since my specs are kinda shitty so I'm wondering what it looks like on consoles.

Played a few matches yesterday and I wasn't really impressed. The unstable framerate doesn't really help at all even after I decreased the resolution / graphic level.

But it's not like I'm really looking forward to this game anyway, so maybe I'll pass or wait until heavy discount.

That's good to hear, I'll take the visual hit for a smoother framerate any day.

Although I gotta say, the game on high looks really nice, gives BF4 on Ultra a run for its money and maybe looks even better at times (although like I said, only played it once).
 
Just played a couple of hours with a few friends. As we were a group I never played as a monster, but I enjoyed the game for the time I played. As a hunter it can be frustrating and a bit dull if you spend 10 minutes just going in circles after the monster, but by the same token, it makes the inevitable clash more tense.

Not sure there's enough uniqueness for me to jump at full price, I'd really like some sort of modifier or L4D style director which also changes things up (a storm, or stampede created from a dome being created, a meteor shower, etc etc). Also I think hunter movement would be nice a little faster.

Yup, I have a 4gb 770 FTW smooth as butter maxed with tesselation and AA. My friends with 2gb 660TI's have to play on medium with FXAA to get reasonable frames and still have decent video lag.

yeah,i need to get rid of my 2GB 770 i just bought this march. 2GB is dead,sadly. hope I can sell it and get a 970 with 4gb
