Elite: Dangerous Standard Beta (Starting Jul 29th - $75)

No import charges for me (or the other people I know ordered in the UK). The tracking indicates it was already in the UK from the start of its journey. There are few orders remaining now and shipping is quicker than ever. Shipping should take less than a month, several people have gotten theirs who ordered just a week ago. Most of the European October orders have shipped.

Yup - you pay the usual import fees to the courier when it arrives... a nasty sting in the tail... but easier to hide from the SO

Web site says 8 weeks waiting time for DK2... so get yer skates on.

And to continue the discussions above. You need to get a HOTAS setup first. You can make do temporarily with a 360 gamepad, but it is no substitute for the "real thing". A mouse and keyboard are "useless inputs" for VR. So buy that and get used to it before submerging into VR.

Thanks gents, might just place an order for one then.

Getting a X52 Pro as well so HOTAS set-up is sorted.

Stop doing this to me! I promised myself I'd wait for the consumer version but I'm always getting tempted. I'm gonna take your avatar as a sign not to, since I just did a marathon of that show and was left feeling disappointed so I'll just pretend the same would happen with the rift for now. Totally not doing the price conversion for the billionth time right now.

The reason I didn't wait for the consumer version is because, if the DK1 is any indication, these things hold their value pretty well. If you sell at the right moment, you should be able to upgrade to the consumer model without needing to pay much at all. The only thing that could potentially disappoint you is the resolution; but if you keep that in mind and set your expectations accordingly (expect to see pixels and aliasing) Elite in Oculus will blow your mind.

I sold my DK1 for MORE than I paid for it - AFTER I received my DK2 - so timing is not that sensitive. Just be in there on the first set of consumer edition orders and you will have plenty of opportunity to sell. Although it may be cool to have 2 headsets to try and socialise VR in the house :) So yeah your investment is pretty safe.

Glad to hear you avoided import duty with the DK2... thinking back you may be right... I think I was only stung for the DK1. The DK2 shipped from the UK somewhere.

As as us true Elite aficionados know... HOTAS and Rift is really the only way to play! ;)

Now looking forward to meeting other Elite nut jobs at the premiere event on the 22nd.

I'm thinking about getting a flight controller setup with this and Star Citizen coming out (eventually). Are there any that are wireless? I almost primarly game on my HTPC on the couch, and I'd rather keep it that way if I can.

I wouldn't go wireless just because of control delay and I don't know of any 'good' ones that are wireless (T. Flight, Logitech 3D, X52/Pro/55, CH setup are the 'go to').

I actually bought one of these: USB Extension HUB - Active while it's not 'purty', it works fine and I can use it in front of my 60" HDTV with my sound system which is glorious (enjoy it more than the DK2, honestly).

I disagree with this. DK2 is pretty much the bread and butter of enjoying this game in an immersive environment. Yea, you can get away with playing it without the DK2, but it will be significantly less appealing IMO. I'd say both HOTAS and DK2 are required.

Waiting for CV1 to come out (which is probably going to be late next year or early 2016) is wasting a lot of time that you could have been enjoying the VR today.

Yes, it can be, but for someone brand new to the game and VR, I wouldn't recommend it, almost everybody I show the DK2 to gets a little sick, and movement in ED can be pretty quick. I mean, it's all preference, but if he's on the fence with VR in general, I wouldn't recommend a $370-400 device that is beta and takes some tweaking to work with in order to enjoy this game, it's 100% great without it. I truly believe a great HOTAS would be the more important purchase in the long run.

I was brand new to VR and the game, and I loved it immediately; can't imagine playing without it. Sickness, I've found, comes mostly from running around in first person. I've had no trouble with seated experiences such as Elite assuming they're running smoothly (low fps and jittery tracking can cause sickness too). But it's all subjective, of course. Some will acclimatise immediately, some will need a bit of time. A HOTAS is important too, but I'm getting by OK with a cheap Thrustmaster. I'm glad I spent more money on the rift as I can use that for games other than Elite (Assetto Corsa is fantastic too).

Okay thanks. Obviously not an ideal solution, but probably good enough, since I can just put the cable away when not playing. I'm still not even sure if I want to play this sort of game on my couch, as I'd probably need some sort of tray to put the controllers on too.

Does it seem likely that this game will be out by Christmas? I know they are closing the Beta at the end of this month, so I'm hoping that it will.

Pretty annoyed with this game. Was doing a couple missions when I got one to deliver 3 things of leather to Bradfield Orbital. When I got to the destination to offload the cargo the mission was gone, and since the cargo is "haulage" I can't sell, jettison, or do anything to it until I abandon the mission..which has disappeared completely. This happened 2 days ago and I still can't do anything. Suiciding my ship the only option?

It is so damn hard for me to just sit back and watch all the cool videos and everything about this game. Really tempted to throw my money at it, but it's not gonna be *that* much longer... hnnnnnnnng

Yeah, I really want to buy it and play it now too, but this close to release I am just going to wait. Besides, this gives me time to buy a new GTX970 and a 24" monitor before Elite comes out. I'm waiting for Black Friday to see if I can get a deal on the vid card & monitor, if not then I'm buying that weekend.

You can always open a ticket, their respond time is quite fast.

Been playing since Private Beta 1, feel free to add me to the OP/your friends list. In game name is same as my Neogaf name.

I haven't been putting in a ton of time, since wipes have been coming pretty hard lately, but I'm loving interdiction. I will put on my Logitech headphones that have voice modulation built in, turn on the robot voice, interdict humans, and demand a ransom over voice comms. Most fun I've had online in YEARS.

Got to try the DK2 on my friend's rig, which sucks, and the resulting experience was less than good. Been trying to get him to bring it over so we can try it on my better GPU + X52, but no luck yet =P

I think you can, look in the controls, it's near the top, something called "Show mouse widget" if I remember correctly, I think that may do it, but I'm not 100% sure since I can't double check right now, not by my gaming PC.

I tried that.

I think it might have something to do with using TrackIR, since free-look is kinda "always on" when TrackIR is in use and that seemed to disappear when he used free-look.

EDIT: Mighty Jingles has a new video out. Shows off some scenery, a battle, and the discovery of planets in an area where there are supposed to be none.

Holy Shit I love this video!!! I wonder just how profitable exploration will be with the more advanced scanners? I think I could have tons of fun simply planet hunting like this!!!

It raises a few questions though:

1. If you discover a new set of planets and moons and then sell the data, is everyone's galactic maps updated?

2. Can you tell from your galactic map which systems have been explored and which have not?

3. Anyone here try out the expensive scanners yet? Any opinions on exploring and how fun it is?

4. Can this game get freakin released already?????? !!!!!!

Halp me guys, can't I mine all asteroids? Because I'm in front of this beast:

with a refinery and a mining laser, but nothing happens when I use my laser :o

Icy belts can't be mined at the moment. Go into System View and make sure the material type is Metal or Metallic. Go for Major or Pristine resources.

1. That data will become available to everyone, but they'll still need to buy it from Universal Cartographics

2. I can't find any marker of if a system has been explored, it would be nice to have

3. I tried the detailed surface scanner, it seemed to significantly increase the payout from selling your data (still only a jump from maybe 600 cr per system to 5000 cr, so I don't know how profitable exploration will be in the long run)

4. I can't wait either :)

Interesting. So eventually with enough people playing the entire universe would get explored I guess? And it sounds like selling the data for an already explored system is less revenue than an undiscovered system, so yeah there really should be some way of hunting and seeking out undiscovered systems so that exploring can be a viable pursuit.

From your experience with the expensive scanner though it doesn't sound like a real good business plan. Maybe coupled with cargo runs it would be worthwhile as a hobby. Still I think I'd find it fun so I may try it anyway after release.

Speaking of release, is anyone here running this on a GTX560Ti (or similar) graphics card? Wondering if I have to get that 970 sooner or if I can wait til later...

Hehe - nope... never. I think you underestimate the "size" of the universe.

Lets be generous and assume it takes 15 minutes to jump to a new system, entirely map it AND refuel. I imagine this would take a lot more time... but lets be generous.

Lets be generous again and assume that this game has 1,000,000 players, each playing 6 hours a day, every day... no holidays... this is a job! And let's assume they are only exploring - not trading, pirating, and doing the rest of the game.

Lets be generous again and assume that no two players EVER explore the same system.

Then it will only take us 45.6 years to explore the entire universe ;)

So in reality the whole universe will NEVER be explored, never mind how hard you try. Plenty of space there for everyone to play "Mr. Explorer".

Time for a relevant quote....

Space is big. You just won't believe how vastly, hugely, mind- bogglingly big it is. I mean, you may think it's a long way down the road to the chemist's, but that's just peanuts to space.

I agreed to pick up "9 gold" thinking it would be a piece of cake.. 3 hours later and I'm still (when I finally found some gold it's of course only 1t per time..) going back and forth between Dahan - Asellus Prime and LP-Something-something.. lol

So I got back and my Eagle was gone. Luckily I still had my 117k credits to buy a new one.

But the Oculus Rift support is kind of worse? And I don't get how to have more than 1 ship?

Buy a new ship and it'll ask if you want to keep or sell the first one.

UI is less readable than before (don't know why), the Starport Services UI goes out of focus if you don't look right at it, makes it hard to switch the menu. And there is also more shuttering.

I just crashed my hauler by trying to go into a space station at full speed and bouncing off on a Cobra III that was on its way out
and that one got wrecked too, but I think it was an NPC!
.

My ship was filled with exactly all my savings in tobacco, so I actually would have lost -everything- if it weren't for the new loans available in beta 3, allowing me to at least get my ship back. Phew! And I learned my lesson I think: Keep boosting in and out, but maybe trade less in tobacco, that shit can kill you.

Tomorrow with the new newsletter!
Imo, we'll see ED the last week of November.

That sounds a bit too soon to me. I'm wagering more towards the end of December, I think they'll take as much time as possible to polish and bug squash every little thing they can.

I'm half tempted to buy the Mercenary Edition now though for $50. I know damn well I'm buying this after release, so I might as well buy it now and get a few extras along with it....

I really wish it wasn't releasing this year. Co-op is practically not even in the game, alliances haven't been tested at all. Balancing of credit earning between "professions" is woeful. The amount of things to do in the universe is extremely limited. No alerts or on-the-fly priority missions, no real connection from the player to the world or influence. The amount of systems they want to make available is impressive but if you can only do a severely limited amount of things, what's the point?

Yay! I've stayed away from the beta to not spoil it for when it's new and final.

I've been staying away from anything outside of the tutorials. But I'm a complete noob to flight/space sims, so it's helping me get a grip on the game, how it controls, and how the hell to use a joystick.

Glad I paid the $75 for early access for reasons above, as well as helping the game out...even if it's just a small amount.

I didn't get much of a chance to play with the DK2 in 3.03 but spent a good couple hours with 3.04 tonight. I noticed it's "darker" and just doesn't seem to be as 'clear'.

The services map (where you look at stuff on the station to sell/buy) goes in and out of 'brightness' too it seems.

Just seems like a step back from what 3.03 was. The text is definitely blurrier, I spent about 20 minutes in the graphics menu messing with things and couldn't get it to look as good as it did.

Sad, hopefully it's being worked on and this is just a temporary step back.

Still fucking awesome though! Did some trading, learning how to travel a little better and getting used to where the buttons on the X55 are. So much fun.

So I'm stuck I think. I have Cobalt in my cargo (2/4) and the mission has expired. I can't get any missions which use more than 2 cargo and the tooltip on my Cobalt tells me I can't trade (or black market) or destroyed due to it being mission critical and to take the cargo I must abandon the mission which I can't...

I'm pretty new to the game so am I missing something?

NVM: Self destruct :)

This has been happening with all the betas I've played. Not sure what the problem is.

The performance in 3.04 does seem a little less than 3.03. It was quite smooth then. But it could be me.
