Blizzard announces Overwatch. Team based MP Shooter [Up: Trailers, Screens, More]

Blizzard must be doing something right, this is the first time I've been interested in trying a multiplayer FPS in years.

Edit: And it's not because of the butt.

Now I kinda miss Titan. Looks like it could have been awesome. This will be good no doubt, just not my cup of tea.

It might surprise you, but there are a lot of people still playing and enjoying Destiny as many will play and enjoy this one without thinking shouting BLIZZARD!!!!!!!!!!!!!! in their head the whole time.

I'm not saying games like Destiny and (presumably) Overwatch aren't fun games that can be enjoyed. I'm saying that marketing and hype seem to be pushing games that are fun but not necessarily great into mega sellers.

On one hand I'm glad that Blizzard has finally developed a new IP in a new genre for them to boot. On the other hand I get the feeling that nobody would give a damn about this game if it didn't come from Blizzard. I had the same feeling about the Destiny hype - it seemed to be almost entirely about who was making the game and not the game itself. Marketing and hype seem to drive the industry to such an overwhelming level.
Obviously part of the hype is on the Blizzard name, but I'm not sure how much matters. The game is playable right now and will have a long alpha/beta phase before release. And even then it will apparently be F2P. Most people interested in this will likely know what they're getting into and whether or not they'll like it before having to commit to it financially.

Don't think there will be "sales" for this because of the aforementioned F2P angle. It'll just come down to whether or not people are enjoying the game and want to stick with it.

Besides TF2 being a stand out in my mind, are these types of games (arena shooters?) that popular anymore/still? Or is this just the Blizzard magic that always excites regardless?

I know you put a question mark behind it, but TF2 is no arena shooter and neither will Overwatch be one. People just use any random word they once heard these days.

Arena shooter with loadouts and different classes simply doen't exist. Period.

Looking forward to playing it. Hopefully it'll have the same gameplay design of "easy to play, hard to master" mechanics of TF2.

So is it confirmed F2P? And if so, how is that going to work for blizzard in shooter sense?

I'v never played Hearthstone so I don't know how they deal with F2P?

So do we know if these are all the characters? The cinematic trailer showed some cool characters that aren't in any of the gameplay trailers, like the cowboy.
Exact quote?

The question was "Consoles"?

and they were like "Mmmhh.... that's an AWESOME idea."

I really like that time rewind character, actually most of them look interesting. Hopefully they reveal a game mode more unique than CP or death match.

TF2esque makes me curious but not sure about the 6v6. I love the mayhem of 32 players in TF2, or even the standard 24.

What's going on to make her butt expand like this?

I do see the company's new "focus on smaller games" approach written all over this. Titan was a (pun) titanic game. Massive games like that require many multiple components to play well individually and then together. A game like WoW is like 7 different games combined (adventure game, exploration, team co-op, objective battlegrounds, pvp arena, gathering economy). All the individual components that make WoW would work as smaller stand alone games. They were building the same thing with Titan, and while the PvP components were working, the more ambitious MMOish systems like the economy, adventure, progression and co-op (dungeon raiding) were not. While it is smart of them to somewhat salvage what was working from Titan, and after all that money spent, they must, it is kinda disappointing not having the broader game come into being. Maybe if Overwatch is a huge hit, they'll resurrect some of the MMO systems and make a new MMO based on the now-then established franchise.

finally, a game with turrets you upgrade by hitting with wrenches, healing beams that can also buff people's attack power, a sniper rifle you have to charge, bows and arrows, teleporters, stealth killing invisible men, and wacky cartoon characters who speak in stereotypical accents

Nah man didn't you read MormaPope's post? Nothing like TF2 at all especially that Medic character!

Tracer definitely looks like a complicated character.

As long as there's a "buy all" option like in KI i'm okay with this.

Indeed. I'd rather a DOTA style paysystem were everything that costs money is cosmetic, but...I am also willing to plunk down 59.99 for a new game that I want to play.

59.99, and not a cent more.
