Blizzard announces Overwatch. Team based MP Shooter [Up: Trailers, Screens, More]

I really admire that Blizzard are coming out of the gate swinging with Overwatch. Lengthy debut cinematic, extended gameplay trailer, panel discussing in detail what the game is and their design philosophies behind it, plus it's playable at BlizzCon. Throw on top of that all of the various gameplay videos on the Overwatch site detailing each individual character's unique abilties.

This is how you unveil a game.

Yeah, Blizzard seems to be as tired of them revealing a game several years before it launches as we are. Both Hearthstone and HotS went into alpha/beta only a few months after reveal (well, excluding HotS' false starts as Blizzard DotA and Blizzard All-Stars,) and I'd imagine that Overwatch will be the same deal.

Not really interested in the game but I would like to see a movie based on all the characters. The cinematic trailer was fun to watch.

There is no death match mode.

Now I'm in.

Fuck the kd mentality, gimme some teamwork and I'll play the shit out of it.

You know, even if you get people to agree that it's a stereotypical name(it's not), what does it matter? It's still a name. There's 0 reason not to use it and stereotypes are not a reason.

It's not that they used a stereotypical black name for a black character. That wouldn't be an issue. It's that they have used the de-facto black name (in the UK at least) for a fucking ape. If you don't see anything problematic with that, there's not much more I can say.

Looks neat. Blizzard are wizards when it comes to cinematics. Why they're bothering with a live action WC film when they have the in house tools to make it CG I'll never know. If the game is F2P as rumored I just hope that they have a reasonable monetization schema and that there's a far easier learning curve than SC or Dota.

TF2 went for more stylized graphics for the same reason. Being playable on older hardware is pretty important if you want to build up a community.

TF2's graphics were mainly a stylistic choice and it performed on par with the other Orange Box games when it was released, though it did stay on an older version of the engine because of that.

It looks like each character has 4 abilities going by the website so should be easy to pickup.

That's a pretty weak argument. For the longest time you were able to use a picmip kinda command to make it run on a potato. The joys of PC gaming and configs.

"TEAM" Fortress
Team deathmatch is a thing and requires a lot of co-ordination in any half decent FPS. Not including one of the most basic, deep and enduring game modes should not be perceived as a good thing.

As for the game as a whole, Blizzard will fuck this up. Just give them time.

I don't see what's so bad about F2P. You get frequent updates, new heroes, new maps without having to buy $60 yearly instalments and map packs.

So much for MOBA's killing off shooters. CliffyB coming out with a new shooter as well. Games like TitanFall, CoD:AW bringing all sorts of new types of gameplay etc.
What? The genres do it overlap. How could one kill off the other?

Depends on how it's done. It will fucking suck if classes are locked behind grinds or paywalls.

That is the worst part of LoL.

Nah. With Bliz it's all about getting the game to as many people as possible even people playing on a potato lol

Yeah, Blizzard games have always looked like shit from a technical standpoint compared to the games of its time because you can't really afford to spend a bunch of money making a game that is primarily or exclusively for PC that can only run on machines with a $200+ dedicated graphics card.

People bitch a lot about multiplat PC games' graphics being "held back by consoles," but that's a hell of a lot better than being held back by Intel integrated laptop GPUs with shared memory.

lol jeez. "THIS IS RACIST BECAUSE I SAID SO"

Some of the abilities, like the turrets, would probably be useless in deathmatch.

Turrets aren't useless in death match. Though in the games I played the build and upgrade times weren't half as long as the one in in this game without the ultimate.

Looks alright to me. Basically TF2 with more diverse movement and crazier abilities.
And with less charm.

And we'll have to see how the balance and gameplay turns out. The later is not one of Blizzard's strengths.

His point remains. Some classes straight up do not work in Deathmatch.

Many F2P games use bad design to sell products, making them bad games. They are also constrained in a competitive sense because the playing field is uneven.

Basically, it produces a conflict of interest where the developers make more money by making a worse game.

The worst part of LoL is the pointless runes that only exist for a grind. I don't have a problem with buying heroes.

Yeah, I know Tigole and Metzen didn't want to talk about it, but in this day and age it's pretty silly for anyone to not make a class/character-based MP-only game F2P. The only question at this point is if it's going to be the Valve "characters are free, pay only for vanity bullshit" model or the Riot "pay for characters and vanity bullshit" model.

HotS is the latter, but it's entirely possible they'll decide the former works better for Overwatch.
