Assassin's Creed Unity - Review Thread

It's only the worst if you put all of your eggs in very specific yet undoubtedly popular baskets. The games you named were disappointing, yet there are so many games I can name that wildly exceeded my expectations. Shadow of Mordor essentially scratched my Assassin's Creed itch. Wolfenstein was an incredible shooter. Alien Isolation seemed to do right by that series. Bayonetta 2 is fucking rad. For your indy efforts, I loved the hell out of Velocity 2X and Pix The Cat. Call of Duty's back to form this time after a poor effort last year. I think I've played a wider variety of games this year than ever before and loved it.

Seeing a lot of chit chat about AAA games in general in these AC threads which is weird considering another AAA game reviewed extremely well today.

EDIT: Forgot Mario Kart, Smash Bros, Child of Light and Valiant Hearts. Diablo counts, kinda. I think. And the extra frames in The Last of Us.

I think you are mistaking 'worst year' to mean 'no good games'. The reality for many of us is that this year had fewer great games than any year in many, many years.

Putting it a different way... What's the most recent year to have a worse line up of games than 2014?

Ubi knows how large a drought there is in the current gen market. They know many console owners will buy whatever turd the fling out because there's not enough else to play while we wait on the next turd.

I think day one embargos can be fine for some occasions. Master chief collection has a 90 metascore, and its pretty much unplayable right now.

so the 4 campaigns are unplayable?

Who would have guessed a shit load of people flooding dedicated servers for an FPS would cause some issues day one....oh wait, every single multiplayer FPS has had the same issue in the past. I don't remember any CoD, Halo, or Gears being perfect day 1. Didn't Forza Horizon 2 which came out this year also have issues for the first 24 hours.

At least there's an advantage to getting it released a few days later in Europe, even with a post-release review embargo (I can't believe that's a thing) I still had time to wait for reviews and then decide what to do with my pre-order
It's cancelled.

For the past year I have learnt to never ever pre order a game again

Battlefield 4 online issues
Drive Club online issues
Halo MCC matchmaking issues
TitanFall overhyped
Watchdog's overhyped
Destiny overhyped with a review embargo after release

I have learnt to not ever buy a game on launch or pre order. Wait for reviews and also wait for impressions on bugs and online issues.

I have said it before and I will say it again.

The performance problems absolutely outweigh everything else.

Even if a game is superb in its narrative, pacing and overall gameplay it should still be mentioned as a "no buy" because the performance is abysmal.

I might purchase a car at first glance when it looks absolutely wonderful but when it performs like a turd I would bring it back in an instant.

And I am glad it did. That is my last purchase of this year it seems.

Its not just performance. Its an ugly game thats colorless and lifeless.

Doesn't mean it's okay. Also, I think we can all admit that most people love Halo for it's multiplayer. Now that isn't to say that the single player is bad. I think it has one of the best story's of any FPS but the most time playing MCC will be in multiplayer.

As I said earlier, maybe outside of Destiny, no other major FPS release this gen has had a smooth first 24 hours.

But gamers are largely suckers, though. They'll buy/accept almost anything if they're fans of it. "Even with its flaws..." mentality rules the roost.

I'd have to see a list of games from each year but every year except, like, 2007 seems to get this. I may be misinterpreting but when I hear people say "this is the worst year of gaming" I assume that means it's bad in their eyes, not the least good. Weird semantic difference there, I know.

Expecting a lot of, "It's a terrible, broken, piece of shit, 7.5/10" style reviews.

So predictable.

yes, they are completely unplayable WITH friends. My friend and I tried to get in the same lobby for an hour and a half last night, we just gave up and called it a night. 343 just said they are trying to fix it. Other games arent perfect, but at least most of them are playable with friends

cod actually holds up really well for the amount of people playing online day 1.

So ridiculous.

What about Valiant Hearts, Shadow of Mordor, South Park, MK8, Reaper of Souls, FH2... hell even Kirby Triple Deluxe was great.

There's been a huge amount of great games that came out this year. Hell, even COD is pretty good this year.

Just because this game crapped the bed doesn't mean it's THE WORST YEAR EVAR.

Isn't it? It's like judging the year in movies based on the $100 000 000+ summer blockbuster releases.

& only half of Driveclub was/is broken. :p

Exactly my view. It looks absolutely stunning to look at but the performance just ruins every single beautiful thing that is present.
thank you. and I'm really pissed about it, I want to like this beatiful thing.
I don't know if to blame the X1 version I am playing or the game in general

ah, wonder what they did there then. Because to me campaigns would still run P2P and only multiplayer would be dedicated....guess I'll enjoy the campaign alone for a bit when I get home from work....well Ill enjoy installing and updating first for a bit XD. Never played Halo 4's story but I heard it wasn't that great.

AC is cancelled at this point guaranteed anyways....this is just pathetic. Seeing all those Dragon Age reviews and stuff makes me excited though....

Game in general because I can tell you that the PS4 version has some issues too. I'm not sure how it is compared to the Xbox One version though.

Oh for fucks sake. I give up, enjoy the shit-show in these threads, I'm going to go enjoy this shitty colorless and lifeless game.

It's just opinion. I dunno. I'm playing it now, and I can kind of agree. I just spent some time messing with the brightness levels trying to balance things out more. Brightness at 5 is too dark, and things look crushed. Brightness at 6 is better, but the higher up you go, the worse it looks. So you have a pretty small window. I know it's not my TV as it's calibrated, and I all my other X1 games look great on it.

It's just the style of the game. It doesn't bother you (or you don't think its even an issue), that's fine. My issue is more with the FPS and the performance. I do think it's immersion breaking to have it be choppy and slow. And I also notice a lot of FPS dips when it transitions into cut scenes (where things start to slow down). But whatever. If you are enjoying the game, that's great. Feels good to play something that you really like.

I just do not understand that mentality.

If I go to an IMAX theatre I will expect a proper screen size with impressive surround sound and crystal clear video quality.

I do not expect SD quality with 2.0 sound. If a theatre does that I would demand my money back and walk out, never to return again.

Sounds like Assassin's Creed II is still the greatest Assassin's Creed of all time.

Bring back Patrice Désilets and Jesper Kyd.

Ubisoft pls.

If you don't, get a Wii U and buy some Nintendo AAA Games. Won't have those issues.

What version are you playing? I find the game to be a little too dark myself on the PS4 version so I imagine the Xbox version is worse.

Brutal times for Ubisoft, they're getting slammed and rightfully so. Micro transactions, bad
1080
PR, and making glitchy/overhyped games. They need to turn it around next year.

True, but they need to be even easier to see coming. Why are we only hearing about this stuff now for AC:U?

I think as a community we really really underestimate how much PR control goes into absolutely everything we see of a game until reviews and embargoes end, do we really think ubisoft had no idea about the fps/popin issues? instead they release tightly controlled demos to select youtubers who aren't going to question anything and well edited gameplay videos where these issues aren't present or on a much more powerful pc that negate them

Dudes why are the PS4 and Xbox One versions getting different averages.

They're supposed to be the same game.

You new to reviews brah? Every game ever gets different scores on metacretic because sites don't review both copies. They review one and give it a score and then metacritic gives the score based on what version was used. Since the Xbox One version was the copy most people used you have more reviews for that version and you get a more accurate number. Less sites used the PS4 version so the average is different.
