Assassin's Creed Unity - Review Thread

Wow hearing of how this game runs and all the F2P shit that's littered in it, makes me wonder how the hell this game still pulled an 81 metacritic.

Big publisher fear. From what I've read, review scores are quite generous. Ubisoft won't do better if you give them a slap on the wrists. I hope they don't manage Watch Dog sales or better, would be a travesty. Ubisoft have been coasting for years on badly made games with OCD traits.

Please tell me a Pentium III with a Voodoo 3DFX is running this.

Wow. Wtf? It does look like shit. Is that representative of in-game? Aliasing is horrible. Depth perception is fucked...everything looks like cardboard cutouts pasted on top of each other. Seriously Ubisoft?

Because "Playstation Lifestyle" game AC4 a perfect 100 score. Makes the PS4 version look definitive based on Metacritic.

Smacks of shady practices to promote your brand's version to me, especially on a game that obviously is not deserving of a "perfect 100" score.

Funny thing is that I really don't think Ubisoft even gave out PS4 copies for review.

We need a thread talking about whether 2014 was the worst year of gaming. This, MCC, and Driveclub are just broken. Titanfall and Destiny were extremely overhyped and average games.

So many disappointments this year.
Great year for PC gamers. :)

Sorry for gloating...

Except reviews on Metacritic are weighted depending on the source and you can bet your ass Playstation Lifestyle carries little weight.

Yup. No buy for me. Too much bullshit surrounding this game

... you do realize that Playstation Lifestyle has nothing to do with Sony, right?

I just played it for an hour and I am really disappointed. Not because of the game [it sure is the AC you love minus the ship battles], but technically it's a disgrace. It's low-fps all around on Xbox One and there's a constant stuttering going on.

This doesn't feel finished at all and sure needs a LOT more polish - they should have delayed it a few weeks. No harm in that.

At one point in the game [I was in a room in a house] it dropped to what I felt 10fps. And it lasted for a whole minute, before the engine got a hold of itself. Shame on you Ubi!

Maybe they couldn't delay it due to the XBO bundle.

Wii U kicked ass this year.

PS4 and Xbone output have been VERY disappointing this year. You're forgetting Watch Dogs, too. That game was very hyped going into it, and ended up being mediocre as fuck.

You're absolutely not. I don't know how long you've been on GAF, but whenever a high profile game gets nonstellar reviews, people love to jump in and shit all over it. It'll probably be like this for a few days before it settles down.

I don't mean to say that anyone in particular isn't justified in their hate. It sounds like the console versions are technical messes and the microtransaction stuff (while I haven't encountered it yet in my time with the game) is pretty indefensible.

I don't go here much. I really enjoyed Watch_Dogs and ACU. Pretty much every Ubisoft game I like.

The only thing that bothers me is the framerate. Seen a few people say they don't have fps problems, really wonder how. Microtransactions aren't in your face and you definitely don't have to buy them to be OP. Black Flag had micrtransactions. Never felt the need to buy anything.

It's actually sad to see gamers want a game to be bad. I don't even know if I have the mental aptitude required to make the leap into this dark side of gaming.

Disappointed in many gamers here.

It's definitely something I've been noticing for a while around here. The sentiment has always been on GAF, but it seems to be particularly strong in the last couple of years.

People just seem to be really mad and enjoy participating in hate fests. Maybe it's just because I'm getting older, but I find it hard to care so much these days.

Then again, the game design of Destiny got me pretty riled up. First time I've sold back a game in years.

Just about every single major FPS release this gen, sans Destiny, has had issues with MP during the first couple of days (BF4 had numerous issues).

FYI, MCC matchmaking seems to be working now.

It carries weight today though. Release day and embargo lift day. Metacritic is slow in adding reviews it seems and the PS4 version of the game is scoring quite a bit higher than XBO. Is the XBO version really that much worse, or is the Playstation Lifestyle review pumping it up?

Woah. I'll definitely be passing on this game. Seems like this game should have been pushed back to Q2/Q3 2015.

Besides, AC2 and Black Flag are in my backlog.

Ubisoft may need an overhaul at the management level and in PR. They are toxic right now. Post-release embargoes are a disgrace. Assassin's Creed does not need to be an annual franchise. Give it a breather for a year or two.

I'm glad Jade got out of there recently.

PlayStation Lifestyle is a fan site.

Why the hell is the is the metascore so high? With the issues we've seen come to light during the day, I feel it should be at the highest 7.

... you do realize that Playstation Lifestyle has nothing to do with Sony, right?

Well they're certainly biased towards someone. I'm not saying the game should be bashed, but there have been enough technical issues that are OBVIOUS that should have knocked the game down from 100% perfect score.

maybe 76 metacritic average with reviews going

'but if you can look past [insert laundry list of damning technical and gameplay flaws], it's one of the best games you can spend your money on! Next-gen may have started out as a lot of empty promises, but with Unity Ubisoft finally delivers on the label!'

We'll see. I usually have such low expectations but reviewers have seemed to have been a lot harsher on big AAAs lately. We'll have to cross our fingers.

I only got to page 2 reading this thread (which is now 30 pages long), and this post was pretty prophetic. (Yeah I'm pretty LTTP but I'll catch up)
Some of these reviews should have lower scores based on their content.

Post-release embargo pissed of Kotaku's Stephen Totillo so much that he's done accepting post-release embargoes at all.

Twitter link.

Bravo.

the only time I could see it making sense is an online only game where the servers dont turn on till launch day. But then of course they could just provide access, almost like beta access, to reviewers prior to launch

Destiny doesn't have unplayable issues with its multiplayer but the balancing was laughable to the point it was broken

It's a Neogaf thing. Also notice the need to shit on journalist for doing their jobs and of course the tin foil hat conspiracy theories about journalist taking money from devs when games get good scores.

Agreed. Every game I've been excited about has fallen flat.

Only GTAV (hopefully) can save us now.

I've never understood why anyone would accept a post-release embargo. Just buy the game

He explained it pretty well, no? If they had to "just buy the game," their review would probably come even later unless they somehow managed to procure a super early copy.

Because they wouldn't get the game before release date then. Should they review it for 20 minutes and put it online on release day?

Money is hard to come by? Pretty much everything I do gives me money.

I haven't played the game. This is from Blim

I was surprised to find that some chests actually have clothes in them. I only found a few, and only in higher level locked chests (not sure if they all required level 3 lockpick or not though). Otherwise it's only money, but you actually need it a lot since money is actually harder to come by in ACU than in any other AC game. Especially the stuff you can renovate doesn't get you much money at all, with a rather ridiculous chest size to boot (like 800F with almost all renovated, that's ridiculously low when a high level chest can net you 4000). So yeah, I really went for every chests I found this time.

That sounds like great reason not to include them in the game.

They're in-game ads for an app. An app that has no direct use on its own so it needs to be placed in the full game's world as a combination lock over the game's chests.

Its self destructive to immersion and comes across as cheap shilling.

Skippable? You bet.

In a game where you are supposed to be in the future playing a "game" of your ancestors memories, a companion app that perfectly fits into the game future world breaks immersion?

k.

Black Flag has Microtransactions. The game isn't p2w. Only the lazy and people with money to throw away will buy these shortcuts

Microtransactions shouldn't be in a full price game full fucking stop. If someone wants to be 'lazy' in their playstyle then they should be able to without having to spend MORE money because of their play style.

IDK man.

Apart from 3 and now this one I can't think of any properly poor AC game.

I feel like most of them have been fairly poor games. They have the trappings of greatness, with interesting settings, scope, and traversal, but Ubisoft's reliance on collecting a million trinkets and their inability to craft compelling missions to complement their ambition severely damages the games from the start.

Wow, so AC Unity is game disappointment of the year for me. Nice to see reviews arent all glowing just because Ubisoft spent a lot of time and money on it.

I dunno, it might just be the year of over-hyped releases disappointing. I had a great time with some less-hyped stuff this year: Wolfenstein, Bayonetta 2, 1st party Nintendo, indies.

Anyway, this went from a "maybe" to a "no" for me. The framerate is one thing, the fact that it's got F2P currency components really turns me off.

The future stuff is the absolute worst part of this entire series and anything that reminds me that I'm just in "the matrix" sucks ass. IMO of course. But if I'm an employee at Asbergo, why would my own company ask me to pay RL money to access certain things?
