Assassin's Creed Unity - Review Thread

Well they're certainly biased towards someone. I'm not saying the game should be bashed, but there have been enough technical issues that are OBVIOUS that should have knocked the game down from 100% perfect score.

That's fine and all, but there's obviously nothing like "Smacks of shady practices to promote your brand's version to me" going on here.

Fucking hell.

Wow. Just... why, Ubi, why?

I called that this would be a continuation of AC3 when it comes to gameplay dreariness and reception. Unity has always looked like a sequel to AC3 when it comes to style.

In a game where you are supposed to be in the future playing a "game" of your ancestors memories, a companion app that perfectly fits into the game future world breaks immersion?

k.
The immersion of being in revolutionary France? Yes. Which I imagine is the point of trying to craft a new engine and lighting and crowd systems - to give you the sense that you're actually inhabiting a historical space. To feed into the fantasy of being an Assassin of that time period.

But maybe you're right and that space is just a context-appropriate medium for upsells.

If it's a playstation fan site run by playstation fans, it absolutely could be shady practices to promote their brand's version. Not "their brand" as in part of their company, but "their brand" as far as their favorite brand.

We need a thread talking about whether 2014 was the worst year of gaming. This, MCC, and Driveclub are just broken. Titanfall and Destiny were extremely overhyped and average games.

So many disappointments this year.

Not even close. So many great games. Bayonetta 2, Tropical Freeze, Sunset Overdrive, Shovel Knight, MK8. I could go on. Those games deserve to be celebrated.

It's a Neogaf thing. Also notice the need to shit on journalist for doing their jobs and of course the tin foil hat conspiracy theories about journalist taking money from devs when games get good scores.

Can you really blame people for being so jaded and cynical with all the crap going on in the gaming journalism business right now? And yes, money has changed hands and people are very biased, and that is exactly the problem, but it won't go away. Just watch a news story on Fox, then switch to CNBC and CNN, you will get two or three totally differnt tones/angles to the same story based on their political allignment......

Agreed. Every game I've been excited about has fallen flat.

Only GTAV (hopefully) can save us now.

GTAV and Dragon Age: Inquisition, it seems. Oh, and Little Big Planet 3 can not disappoint if you are into that series. Bayonetta 2 is a killer game, and I do believe Smash Bros U will be one as well.

Plus, COD: AW is the best Call of Duty in years, so there's that.

In other words, this has been a pretty good year regardless.

But Unity? I'm skipping it.

Just about every single major FPS release this gen, sans Destiny, has had issues with MP during the first couple of days (BF4 had numerous issues).

FYI, MCC matchmaking seems to be working now.

Destiny had issues but they got over shadowed by the crap story and lack of content.

Sunset Overdrive is amazing. Probably my favorite game so far this year. On wii u i've only played mario kart 8 which is really good.

But it seems like most of the big releases that everybody is talking about have been a disappointment in some way.

really like what totilo and schreier are doing over there

Respect for them to support earlier reviews. If I had this preordered digitally or traded in for it I would have been stuck with it if the issues hadn't started popping up early. In turn I wish more companies would allow for early reviews of their games. It displays a show of confidence in your product.

It's sad, but true that 2014 has indeed been quite disappointing. 2014, as a whole, has been a pretty lukewarm year for games, which is unfortunate since last year was so exciting with the launch of the new consoles.

I haven't played the game. This is from Blim

Post is true but by no means does it imply that it is so hard to come by it that you must consider buying it. It does make you work for it more though and I haven't completely the game just yet so that could factor in. For now though I don't see it being a problem.

Assassin's creed has always been a sci-fi game. Or I guess some people don't get that. IDK.

The negatives I read on some reviews don't justify the ratings, bugs and frame-rate issues should be fixed ASAP though

still excited to play it like I was and I believe I'll enjoy it a lot.

Well COD is better than expected. That is a small plus :)

Videogamer - 8/10
It's a good time to be an Assassin's Creed fan. I just wish my console could run it properly.

I've not read the whole thread and I'm sure this has been brought up, but SERIOUSLY WHAT DOES THIS SCORE AND COMMENT EVEN COHERENTLY MEAN TOGETHER???

So ridiculous.

What about Valiant Hearts, Shadow of Mordor, South Park, MK8, Reaper of Souls, FH2... hell even Kirby Triple Deluxe was great.

There's been a huge amount of great games that came out this year. Hell, even COD is pretty good this year.

Just because this game crapped the bed doesn't mean it's THE WORST YEAR EVAR.

It's only the worst if you put all of your eggs in very specific yet undoubtedly popular baskets. The games you named were disappointing, yet there are so many games I can name that wildly exceeded my expectations. Shadow of Mordor essentially scratched my Assassin's Creed itch. Wolfenstein was an incredible shooter. Alien Isolation seemed to do right by that series. Bayonetta 2 is fucking rad. For your indy efforts, I loved the hell out of Velocity 2X and Pix The Cat. Call of Duty's back to form this time after a poor effort last year. I think I've played a wider variety of games this year than ever before and loved it.

Seeing a lot of chit chat about AAA games in general in these AC threads which is weird considering another AAA game reviewed extremely well today.

EDIT: Forgot Mario Kart, Smash Bros, Child of Light and Valiant Hearts. Diablo counts, kinda. I think. And the extra frames in The Last of Us.

Shame it didn't happen sooner, but this is a step in the right direction. Everything Kotaku is doing lately is building my respect for them more and more.

Which is the whole point of them taking this "stance". It's an empty gesture to garner goodwill from a site which has taken a ton of shit for a while.

Oh, how could I forget Mario Kart 8? It's the best Mario Kart, and I still play it from time to time.

This has been a good year, folks.

It has been a pretty disappointing year but there has still been many great games. Sunset Overdrive, Forza Horizon 2, Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze, Mario Kart 8, heck I would even put Threes on my list. I enjoyed Titanfall too -- didn't think it was overhyped at all. Game lived up to my expectations.

Would wait to put MCC in the same category as Driveclub; Way too soon. I did play a few matches a few hours ago (though it did take a while). Things should (hopefully) be straightened out by tomorrow at the latest.

Of course this is true but when we have a thread last month about IGN being shills because they unbox a AC product they received from Ubi there is something wrong. I understand being suspicious but nearly every major release of a game is criticized on this forum. I understand that comes with the territory of being in a community of people who support this hobby on such a deep level but sometimes it gets to me. Taking yourself out of this bubble that is a hardcore community is sometimes exactly what people need to do to get some perspective.

Destiny had issues but they got over shadowed by the crap story and lack of content.

The Destiny launch was pretty smooth in my experience. I was able to play PvE and PvP without any major issues the first day. That said, Destiny has a nasty habit of kicking people off the server during bounties, raids or the crucible.

MCC matchmaking was borked last night. Glad to hear they fixed it as I'm looking forward to playing some time.

It's a joke. He likes the game. He dislikes the performance.

It's not hard to figure out.

Except it comes across like he's blaming the consoles instead of the developers. "Unity is fantastic, it's just too bad Sony and Microsoft didn't give Ubisoft what they needed to make the game run properly."

Judging by what I've seen in the PC performance thread, there is nothing to blame on console specs here.

Not even close. So many great games. Bayonetta 2, Tropical Freeze, Sunset Overdrive, Shovel Knight, MK8. I could go on. Those games deserve to be celebrated.

Hard to believe all of those were this year.

Good year for me. Also got MGR on PC at the beginning of the year. The Banner Saga, Bravely Default, FF: Theatrhym CC and Child of Light amongst a few others.

I have said it before and I will say it again.

The performance problems absolutely outweigh everything else.

Even if a game is superb in its narrative, pacing and overall gameplay it should still be mentioned as a "no buy" because the performance is abysmal.

I might purchase a car at first glance when it looks absolutely wonderful but when it performs like a turd I would bring it back in an instant.

Dragon Age Inquisition lived up to the hype critically.

And I am glad it did. That is my last purchase of this year it seems.

The controls are rage inducing. I don't remember wanting to throw my controller across the room when playing Black Flag, but Unity is making me want to smash it as hard as I can into the wall.
