Assassin's Creed Unity - Review Thread

I moved my preorder to FC4. But idk if ill get it in the end. Ubisoft's anti-consumer tactics has made me deeply distrust and dislike the company. I don't know, the weaponization of embargoes really seals it.

I gave up on buying ubisoft triple a games after watch_dogs. All their big games just seem so alike. Mission structure, content, gameplay. For example, how watch_dogs, assassins creed and farcry follow the exact same mission discovery mechanic; go to some high point, sync/hack/explorer which in turn reveals the collectables/missions in the area. Just to name a few.

Missions always been very lackluster, specially in assassins creed with their god awe full tail missions. Im done with ubisoft, ill get their big games when its in the budget bin or something.

The only thing that was fun and refreshing in the last assassins creed was the sailing missions. Anything on land or even worse, the present day missions got tedious pretty fast and predictable.

This is so disappointing. This was one of my most anticipated games this year. I'm really hoping for a Ubisoft official statement, just to see what they'll say.

Or perhaps he could just tell his readers that the developer/publisher isn't confident enough in their game to allow for pre release reviews and that they should probably be worried about the games quality.

In later tweets, he tells his readers that if they can't wait 9 hours for a review, the problem is basically with them and not the system.

I'm actually disappointed on the Jim Sterling stance.

If the game crashed on him, he felt to the void and all that, he should have put on a review reflecting that and give the game a 2 or something.

I guess he (or his boss) doesn't have the guts to do that.

From interviews, it sounds like they made some bets based on their expectations of the hardware that just didnt pan out since hardware was less capable than they expected.

I think they needed another 3-6 months but Ubisoft didnt want the huge stock hit (like with watchdogs) and decided to ship as is.

Ubisoft is terrible publisher. Sure more power would be great but the game is buggy, glitch un-optimized mess on every platform.

Sometimes embargo dates are embargoed. Seriously, that's a real thing. It's pretty messed up.

Meh, the game is still going to have super fun gameplay and everybody and their grandma is going to buy it, like Destiny, this game may be Destiny 2.0

Definitely. Imo Ubi should have focused on Rogue this year alone, and let Unity sit in the oven a bit longer. Even if they released it around March next year, it clearly needed a lot more time. Hopefully the reviews mean we'll get a lot of patches and a decent sequel, like Black Flag from III.

Really? It ran ok on my laptop which is waaaaaaaaay slower than a desktop machine, but I didnt max the settings.

I think it will run good on PS4/Xbone just not on the older consoles

My 660Ti ran farcry 3 flawlessly. With everything max. At 60fps.

That's really odd then. I mean my system isn't majorly powerful these days but a 3Gb 580 should be able to lock at 60 on some settings. I've always kinda wondered if perhaps something was wrong with my copy since I've never had such strange issues with a game before and my PC managed to hold over 100Fps on FC2 at Max easily. I may have to re-install it and see if it fixes it up but out of curiosity, did either of you turn up the FOV? I always max it out on FPS games so I'm wondering if maybe that caused an issue.

Can't say I'm surprised but it sucks.
The game has awesome new things like the redesigned parkour and the sandbox misson structure but it seems it wasn't enough.

Definitely interested to see Ubisoft reaction to this.

I just don't get it, I mean the game had 10 studios working on it? Must've been development hell

I think thats the problem though. When they hit problems, they were just powerless to actually improve it. CYA of every team member not wanting to lose their job.

Crowd team: "I hit my goal of 1000 NPC's on screen"

Tester: "but they look stupid, they have identical clothes and have the same few poses and build size"

Crowd team: Well I was asked to create 1000, not told how they had to look

etc repeat for everything (eg the buildings/stores/cafes that are just fronts with no entrance or even window to look inside)

So basically it's AC1 for the new generation. Turn in a lackluster game, nom nom nom those profits up, and start giving a damn for the next release. Way to celebrate tradition Ubi.

Translation: "We want as many clicks as we can get, so we will run the reviews as soon as we are told we can because if we wait to do it on our own terms, we will not get as many readers. That doesn't serve us any better!"

Isn't he pretty much saying that though? Doesn't seem like he's really hiding it, we all know how these sites make their money.

I had my FOV at like 85, 90. give it another go dude. Great game! You could get blood dragon for cheap now too which is even better than the Base game

Oh no, the game has a 76 on metacritic.
hot garbage
fuck Ubisoft
worst company ever
betrayal
is Ubisoft going to go bankrupt
knew all along it would be vampire rain 2.0

I don't have much faith in the engine for FC4 personally just yet. Not only did FC3 run like crap on PS3 but it also ran like crap on my PC. A certain setting was outright broken, micro stuttering was horrible and never managed to fix it, but worst of all random things would lock my FPS at an awkward 28 out of nowhere, like getting in a car, seeing water or deciding to face west. My system had no trouble holding 60fps until it randomly locked itself every few minutes. The only solution was to change a graphical setting, apply, then swap it back, and even then it would only work for a minute or two.

Gave up on it in the end since it was such a headache. Will be waiting for the DF analysis before I put a FC game back on the maybe list due to my experiences with their last game.

Far Cry 3 ran very well on the PS3. At least, I didn't notice anything bad.

That is exactly what he is saying, except at the end, he is acting like they are doing it for the readers. He says straight up they will not get as many readers if they post it later, but they will not do it to better server their readers. It is to better serve Polygon, not the readers.

I actually agree with Arthur on some of this. The entire system is built around this pre-order bullshit with retail exclusives, etc. Maybe if Publishers don't see massive pre-order numbers they will be MORE INCLINED TO RELEASE A QUALITY PRODUCT AT LAUNCH.

I was actually about to give it another shot but it seems my PC hates it. Now the Ubi game launcher isn't working and I can't install any other versions as it reports that I have a newer version. I'll have to try dropping the FOV when I get it to launch again. Blood Dragon was awesome though for sure, couldn't resist the soundtrack and decided to bite on PS3.

I find the game is reviewing well despite all the problems it has, Driveclub was absolutely shatted upon, yet it's a very addictive racer which never drops a frame below 30. So I guess there are different standards for different games. At least with driveclub somebody did not test the networking code properly, but AC-U is a mess on so many levels.

They knew what they were doing. Check their stock price being hit on Watchdogs.

Delaying wold cause a lot of cost both directly and indirectly.

They would have spent more money on development/testing etc directly.

They would move out of the lucrative holiday season sales (and for example the xbox one bundle)

They would have shifted the revenue into a different financial year hitting their yearly goals.

They would have been spending time on finishing this game versus developing the sequel (or at least sequel to the engine)

Financially it was probably the right call. They need their next game to be excellent however (like COD AW delivered after the disappointment of ghosts)

That's most likely a negative though. Having a huge team is nice and all, but there's no synergy and it's hard to see the full picture when you're spread across multiple studios all around the globe. I can only imagine the disorganization that comes with that many studios working on their own parts of the same game.

Who cares about metacritic, God Hand and Nier also have a mediocre average on Metacritic, yet they are my favorite video games of all time.

This. I don't get why people are pissed at review sites for wanting to review games, even late.

I understand Kotaku taking a stand against it, and other people being hesitant.

I don't think I am gonna buy a game on blind faith again. Actually like the content that is in there, but damn that framerate is absolutely terrible. It's ruins my enjoyment of the game and all it does is show how this game wasn't ready to be released yet, but of course Ubisoft does not care because it will sell anyways. I guess I'm part of the problem, not happy about it at all.

I'm still tempted to get this with my buy 2 games get 1 free deal at Target.

The only game I know I'm getting is Halo: MCC. Other options include Metro Redux, Sleeping Dogs Remastered, and Forza.
