Sony reveals PlayStation Vue streaming service.

Why do I not trust Sony to roll this out successfully and market it successfully? Am I the only one who feels this way?

If it was Google and Apple, sure.. But something about Sony rubs me the wrong way on this...

It's very forward thinking and extremely reliable as I would love to try it but Ehhh.. I don't know...

It'd be nice if they could offer a nationwide package without local channels rather than me having to wait and cross my fingers that it'll be available in my city one day.

I honestly forgot about those, but very few games are on those channels and the vast majority of the games(including the playoffs up to the finals) are on cable channels.

Not too many people are going to use that for various reasons.

Thats true but if they can get turner and disney/ espn could be huge.

definitely going to try this (in Chicago). But Sony...Where is the PS4 media remote?? This would be a perfect time to launch it.

It's important that this won't crap out all the time. Cox and Time Warner DVRs failed on me constantly, like once a month I needed to replace the whole unit. This better not mess with the PS4 and it's HDD.

It says it's a cloud-based DVR, so it looks like any actual recording aren't going to be stored on your PS device, but streamed to it. So it won't affect the PS4's HDD.

Even more funny, that a lot of People hated xbox one for its tv features, because they buy a console "for its Games" and now, when something like that Comes to PS4 its "huge news", and The "best thing" happened to playststion. Lol. Funny indeed.

IMHO they should rather focus on making PSN More stable.

The difference is, Sony didn't market the console as the next generation TV broadcaster console, while Microsoft exactly did that.
They really pissed of alot of people by unveiling the infamous DRM and focusing on an OPTIONAL feature, which has nearly no connection to gaming as the big focus that day.

A stupid move by MS back than.

It's on iOS, too.

Honestly they could probably stop right there. PS + iOS devices in particular makes the pool of compatible hardware pretty huge.

It is? Well I think this has a very strong chance of being something big. Especially if they can get Disney on board and all of the channels it holds.

EDIT: And I agree with others that Vue is a great name

Playstation TV makes so much sense now. If it could be used as hubs for the other TV's in my house, I might bite.

i might be mistaken or not understanding something, but those are two entirely different things

the way i understand it (i haven't actually used them) the Xbox One tv features just let you control your tv viewing through the UI and voice controls, thus it requires you to already have a cable box and plug it into the console. on the other hand, this Vue thing is an actual streaming tv service, no cable company subscription required

People don't hate the inclusion of TV in the Bone. They hate that it seemed like gaming was such a secondary function as all they talked about in the reveal was the TV functionality. Sony had the right message from the start. They knew that to get momentum you need early adopters and the best way to get early adopters is to target the hardcore gamers.

The other thing is that the Xbox One requires you to have a cable box. This doesn't, which is a game changing bullet point.

Also PSN is a completely different area from this deal. Putting a bunch of negotiators in front of a programming station and saying "okay fix PSN pls!" Won't change anything.

Last time I checked Sony did not hold public even for the PS4 and it's "TV"
capabilities. The backlash was because gamers eagerly anticipated the release of the successor to the X360, instead got a 1 hour long demonstration of it's TV capabilities and a now unsupported camera.

Ok, makes sense. How does it technically work? Will they use The PSN for The on-demand content?

I really liked the idea of the xbone's tv features, but felt it was kinda half assed since it didn't actually replace the cable box. So, this service sounds pretty great, although PS Now makes me a little wary that Sony will actually be able to price this at an attractive level.

And yes, you're a hypocrite if you criticized Microsoft for focusing too much on non-gaming things but you think this is cool.

PlayStation™Vue, a pioneering new cloud-based TV service that reinvents the television experience.

F4Tzda2.jpg

"Everyday TV is about to become extraordinary with our new cloud-based TV service, PlayStation™Vue," said Andrew House, President and Group CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. and Group Executive in charge of the Network Entertainment Business. "PlayStation™Vue reinvents the traditional viewing experience so your programming effortlessly finds you, enabling you to watch much more of what you want and search a lot less. PlayStation™Vue brings the best of live TV and a robust catalog of the latest content, always keeping you connected to what's popular, new and trending. Today's announcement builds on the historic success of PlayStation®4 and demonstrates what our company is capable of when we embrace disruption and stay true to gamers."

Removing Barriers between Viewers and Content:

PlayStation™Vue leverages the power of the cloud to combine the live, on-demand, and catch-up TV content viewers love with a powerful user interface that delivers unprecedented personalization and simplicity.

  • PlayStation™Vue immediately connects viewers to the content they want to watch, helps them easily access their favorite shows and channels, and recommends movies and shows based on their viewing habits and what's trending.
  • Discovering content is both simple and powerful with PlayStation™Vue. The smart "Search" feature narrows down results quickly and intuitively, and the powerful "Explore" function allows viewers to filter the entire catalog of live and on-demand content by type of program, genre, ratings, popularity, length and more.
  • PlayStation™Vue delivers catch-up and on-demand TV, freeing viewers to watch TV on their own schedules. The service makes the past three days of popular programming available without the need to schedule recordings.
  • Viewers can save their favorite shows to the cloud without storage restrictions or scheduling conflicts. Once viewers tag a favorite show, they will automatically have access to episodes of that show for 28 days so that they can watch on their own time.
  • PlayStation™Vue is simple to navigate and intuitive to use. By leveraging the power of the PlayStation® platform and controller, viewers are always one click away from quick access to watching, finding, and discovering content.

PlayStation™Vue will launch commercially during the first quarter of 2015.

Going to be interesting to see how this develops. Sony can probably offer discounts if you buy their products to entice customers. I'm guessing this service will be on the Playstations, Tvs, blurays, phones and tablets. And that's just Sonys product line.

Not actually that important
It's not like it'll ever come to EU. Also I need my footie anyway.
I'm so pissed there's no Sky Go app on PS4/Xbox One where I live, 'cause of course the fuckers want you to buy Multivision to get it on a second TV and are scared shitless people would share their subscriptions between family members

Heh. Digital cable providers already compress the hell out of their content; I shudder to think how much worse this is going to be.

I mean, have people seen U-Verse? Because, damn. Just, damn.

I will support this if it means sticking it to DirecTV and corrupt cable companies. Now Sony, create your own Google Fiber-like service and stick it to the corrupt internet companies.

FUCK YOU 250 GB DATA CAP for $40/mo with 15 kbps!

If you're only getting 15kbps, you couldn't hit that 250GB cap even if your life depended on it.

Shhhhsh you'll ruin his/her agenda if you use logic. It's all the exact same thing. No matter how different it actually is.

This would be perfect for me since I don't have cable in my room. I depend greatly on my 360 and ps4 as means of entertainment.

This doesn't make sense. Microsoft was criticized for putting their focus on TV/Media at the expense of gaming at their reveal and all the way past launch.
Sony built and sold a gaming console first, putting the focus on a more powerful gaming hardware before a TV friendly OS and without forcing a Kinect to non-interested customers.
And this is also an entirely different thing: streaming service =! Plugging your cable box in
And yes, I do own an Xbox One.

I really hope this turns out to be as good as it sounds, but I don't trust any of those networks to abandon the cable and satellite providers so easily.

Is this the biggest cohesive partnership for web-based cable alternatives yet?

The holy trinity

NETFLIX
HBO GO 2015
VUE

Just get the pricing right Sony and you are on to a winner. Playstationer vue and Playstation now covers Tv and gaming.

I'd say soon they will be amalgamated together

Nonsense. The primary focus of the console and it's design is still gaming. Maybe you need to watch the original Xbox One reveal again.

These three points are IMO the best part of this announcement. I'm surprised it took this long for someone to give complacent cable companies a kick up the ass for being shitty for so long.

If they architect this correctly, it should be no problem to stream in Netflix or Hulu quality.

This is pretty much exactly what I have wanted for 10 years. Disney is the obvious, glaring holdout. Would be cool if they offered The Disney stuff (ABC, ESPN, and whatnot) al la carte.

its definitely an interesting argument. I guess SONY "focused" on gamers because they thought gamers would be the early adopters and everyone else would follow. PS2 had a dvd player, but they never emphasized it, and the PS3 was the cheapest Blu-ray at launch (I think), and it became the #1 Netflix streaming box. Microsoft, I'm guessing, put all their eggs in one basket when it came to the TV & Kinect stuff. Which seems to work for those who use it. But "gamers" cried foul. I myself didn't like the TV and Kinect stuff. But that's my opinion. PS4 owner btw.

That makes it seem like the PlayStation division has very little to do with this. Big Papa Sony is levering PlayStation brand for something other than gaming.
