Sony reveals PlayStation Vue streaming service.

I guess it beats creating a whole new brand, but it definitely clutters the house of sub- brands even further.

If the service fails, I think would be able to point to one or several things -

1. The price is shit and/or
2. Playstation is a "gaming" brand and non gaming consumers won't really understand what Vue is and/or
3. The number of platforms involved are too limited.

Number 2 is why I question this.

I think this could be huge...if the price is fair, and you get live TV? shit Sony just dropped a bomb

Like MS is doing with the xbox brand, maybe sony is branching out too with playstation? It is one of their few money making brands

As long as live sports from Fox/NBC/CBS are unavailable on cloud services, cable tv will live on. I would pick this up in a heartbeat if I didn't lose out on all the games I watch

Not as long as sports are locked behind cable.
Yep, the only reason i keep my Sky subscription in Mexico is football. They have exclusive rights to the spanish and english leagues.

My kids watch more youtube than TV now, everything i watch besides sports i can find it online or wouldn't miss,

The sport watcher can have a nice life with Comcast while the rest of us breathe that nice cloud based air.

Assuming this doesn't end up turning into another cable situation due to these various companies wanting more and more money.

Sports are pretty much the only thing holding most people to cable these days due to all the other venues for other cable programming these days.

Do you need a Playstation device to get this service or have they just slapped the Playstation name on it, because the PS4 is the hot thing right now?

The PS4 doing well is definitely a part of it, but know you won't need a console. They're putting this on iOS, so presumably it'll run on PS platforms, iOS/Android, and *maybe* through PCs when all is said and done.

PS is just a brand and Sony is leveraging it. That's what they should do.

I'm guessing you could watch those they have deals with CBS and fox.

Plus most leagues have stuff like nba pass.

Playstation is a very successful area for Sony so I think they want to ride the name of it. But it may be limited to PlayStations. Could help sales even more to have a cheap subscription box in your home with live tv and so on. Interesting to see how this will play out

I think like Playstation Now and remote play, it is going to come to Bravia and Xperia as well. But I imagine this is Sony product exclusive.

It's on iOS, too.

Honestly they could probably stop right there. PS + iOS devices in particular makes the pool of compatible hardware pretty huge.

Things like NBA League Pass don't work with local games and football is probably the only sport that airs a ton of games on channels like CBS and Fox.

If they can make it comparable in price to Hulu an Netflix it's game over man. Game over.

My ps4 will basically be what Microsoft envisioned for xbox1 but without all the backlash and bad press.

Somewhere Somebody in a Microsoft office is throwing his/her hands up an saying " wtf!!"

At first I didn't understand the naming of the service, but I think I get it now. Why not put it under the brand that's actually making you money? They're losing so much, they need all the help they can get.

They said priced comptetitively, I pay 47/month for my cable package so I expect this will be around the same.

I support this 100%
Im glad its coming to Chicago.
I need more local tv back in my life not gonna lie ill pay like 8 buck a month for that.

Eh, a cable alternative would likely be minimum $30 a month (which is huge compared to the $80 or more of most cable plans). They might be best off if they have options where you can build a provider array for yourself from $30 basic to $60 for everything. I have no clue, just guessing. I don't think this will be as cheap as Netflix or Hulu. Otherwise hulu would be offering live TV and Netflix would be offering way newer or next day episodes. That price point just doesn't do enough.

Using PS name is probably worth it: using a video game name may affect how some non-gamers perceive it originally but it also may change their perception over time.

Especially if they make an Apple TV app. And even without one, this would be one more thing they could put onto PSTV to make it a better media device (especially since it's kind of a terrible one right now).

Good point. I wonder exactly how low they would be willing to go? No other streaming service is really that expensive but then again the content they are offering is unprecedented soo

I bet they had Vue in mind when they went ahead and released it with no big name apps. They know soon it will pick up sales when they add Vue.

What about Europe?

What about it? You'll probably get this eventually, but isn't TV there a pretty different beast? Note the handful of cities in the OP. They've barely committed to the states, as it is. Europe is nowhere near alone in terms of being left out right now.

If they act quickly enough this could be the jaws of life for PSTV.

Exactly. It's cost prohibitive. Unless they have a deal with a broadband provider, the bandwidth costs are going to be astronomical. Ask Netflix how much it costs to operate. Add live t.v. and its going to be crazy. Also, as stated in other posts, live sports and special events will most likely be blacked out and require an extra subscription. My guess is somewhere between the $30 and $50 mark.

They are basically offering cable + mega on demand. It's a dream package that they have every right to become the most expensive streaming service for providing. I'd pay $30 a month at least if it really hits my cable needs.

Bloomberg saying the channels on IOS are limited though.

The iPad version of Vue will also be hobbled by the same rights issues that limit the TV-anywhere initiatives of cable companies: Some channels are available on the mobile services and others aren’t, depending on the deals Sony was able to sign.

Kinda funny how the PS4 is now more of a cable box than the Xbox One.

I'm considering dropping Comcast cable for this when it's available.

Even more funny, that a lot of People hated xbox one for its tv features, because they buy a console "for its Games" and now, when something like that Comes to PS4 its "huge news", and The "best thing" happened to playststion. Lol. Funny indeed.

IMHO they should rather focus on making PSN More stable.
