Halo: MCC might not use dedicated servers (update: p2p only as fallback, post #278)

We DO have dedicated servers.

First off – and I will say this for the next hundred years – SORRY – we are fixing it. It’s getting better slowly today and we expect that trend to continue, but what you’re seeing currently is actually just an element of this complicated problem – we do in fact use dedicated servers for matchmade games, but as an emergency contingency, MCC is designed to fall back to traditional peer-hosted gameplay in the event that there are connectivity issues with the dedicated servers. This can happen for a variety of reasons including intermittent unavailability of dedicated servers, poor ping times to the dedicated server datacenters, or network configuration issues that prevent you from being able to access the dedicated servers. We’re busy getting stuff fixed and improved, and I promise you I will give you a full breakdown of what happened (and it’s multiple compounding things) after we fix it all. And Dan is going to update everyone on the situation and improvements later today.

And sorry for periods of radio silence, we're literally rushing around fixing stuff.

Sounds like a depth of issues that could have been solved with an open beta.

Why do they keep saying it's getting better? Are they basing that off the ass-kissing people who make up stuff about having no issues?

It's getting worse, if anything. I'm on right now and can't get anything to work. I have an open NAT and a 55/12 down/up connection, so I know it isn't me.

Because it is? I could not get into games reliable on Tuesday.

I can get into games reliably (MM times vary 1-3/4 minutes). Now those games are not evenly matched and most crash after they are finished, but it's more than I had Tuesday.

You're right... They didn't include the entire multiplayer component on the disc because they wanted to test how fast everyone's download speeds were on Xbox Live.

i'm not saying they weren't pushed. i'm not even saying they didn't know there were issues. i'm saying you've no real evidence that they knowingly released a broken game for the sake of a few days sales

for example they could easily have released it ~early~ because of the shit storm / expense of moving the release date at such a late hour.

they could've massively underestimated a bug, or overestimated their ability to fix it on the fly. it may have nothing to do with a few extra days before christmas.

..what do you want, exactly? If dedicated servers aren't available, would you rather sit there in loading limbo or play your goddamn game? If transparency is your bugaboo, I'm sure 343 can patch in some Price is Right flashing lights for you whenever the cloud goes down if that will make you feel better :\

Thanks for jumping in, Frankie.

Exactly what I had suspected -- that P2P is being used as a fallback.

Seriously, nothing wrong with having contingency plans. This is a good thing.

Reality requires these things, stop believing that dedicated servers or even Azure is this unlimited pool of resources that everyone can pull from forever and for free.

For free? I could've sworn I paid for Live the past 11+ years straight, as well as this game.

The issue could be solved with 10 minutes of caring....

hoypdoy.gif~original

It sure as hell would've been noticed by anybody given a copy of the game within ten minutes. How was it released like this? How do they attend launch parties for this game when they know it's absolutely busted? It wasn't even working in the days leading up to the official launch.

The alternative is making it transparent. Providing text that notifies user when dedicated servers are unavailable... but FUCK transparency, right guys! We can totally trust 343 and Microsoft to take care of us!

If there's a quality difference worth being concerned about, it should be self evident. The alternative is not having access to the game you want to play.

This. The 343 did good, MS' 'unlimited cloud' fell flat.

For there to be no redundancy so when there's problems with dedi's and the game doesn't work, the desperate attempts to compare it to DC will begin to gain more traction.

It's literally all connected to issues that weren't visible in test. And getting better.

I know this is another issue, but any idea what's going to happen to our achievements that are stuck unlocking?

Will they pop this weekend with the patch? Or will they be stuck forever?

It may seem silly to some, but achievements are tied to avatar rewards in MCC, and I really want my Halo CE Master Chief avatar that I was supposed to get when I completed Pillar of Autumn.

The idea of having a game I can never unlock everything in horrifies the completionist in me.

There's your answer, they didn't know. Hard to see a lot of things until a few hundred thousand people rampage your servers.

I mean, I guess they could have known something was up, but I really don't think this is some huge tinfoil hat (ubisoft) cover up to ship a broken game.

Ok, its good to hear it.
Will wait for Dan's update then...

Thanks for the update.

Always a good idea. But of course people should be irritated. My experience has gotten better and better all day, barring some moments that were not directly connected to our initial issues. I'm hoping others are seeing significant improvements but of course when they are, they stop communicating because they're playing. Would be useful for me to see improvement anecdotes and descriptions.

Aw come on dude, don't keep telling us how much better and better it's getting while we all still can hardly get a game. That hurts. Please be aware that 343's "fixes" so far have modified the player experience very little. People are not all too busy playing the game to tell you about how great things are.

I mean, I guess if by "better" you mean "I only had enough time to take one shower inbetween matches" then I guess you could say it's better.

I'm going to try again a bit later and I will give you very specific updates if you'd like them.

They aren't a government agency, they don't have to be transparent just like you don't have to buy the game. Sure it sucks that it doesn't work, but it's getting resolved, 343 is communicating updates to us daily. Just be patient about it. Flipping out wont fix the servers.

There are more than 4000 gamerscore available to unlock,so play some campaign and get it done while you wait! And before you say that achievements are unlocking, they will. You won't lose your progress. It happened to other games too like Watch Dogs.

If it still bothers you, get over it and move on. Not just you, but everyone else that informed about the situation and still upset.

Btw, thanks for the update, Frankie.

Not feasible until MS copies Sony's flashing controller light.

This. The 343 did good, MS' 'unlimited cloud' fell flat.

It doesn't sound like that at all. If I'm reading Stinkle's post correctly, this is a coding fail, not a server fail.

They've known at least since the day one patch with the multiplayer went up and people with early copies couldn't play, but at that point I imagine it was much too late to fix it in time.

...this is a brilliant idea. multicolor flashing for P2P!!!

Who is Stinkles? I remember he had the Xbox One before launch last year so I figured he was with Microsoft. Now it sounds like he is with 343 specifically?

this message is AAA class, kudos

also, having p2p as a fallback mode for when system is broken, thats pretty fine.
after all is said and done and game plays perfectly, I am looking forward to the interesting story you just promised to tell us :)

improvements yes, like frequency of finding games, a little bit, but still very far from fixed.
also, my rockets seem to launch later than I launch them.

one thing that I liked, is that when playing online coop campaign, even when connection shits itself at points and maybe it even freezes for a second or two, the party never looses connection.
I guess that makes the thing ..bearable? even when it manifests at its worst.

another thing that I liked is that in every case I got a nice match (connection-wise) going, the amount of fun I had is huge. thats why the anger :)

Thanks for the update Frankie. Really curious as to what the unexpected factors were that have caused all the issues, especially those that never showed up in testing.

Any chance you can give us a rough, ball-park timeframe when you guys expect to be ontop of the majority if the issues? I appreciate your not in the mosh pit with the dev team, but any idea would be great.
