Assassin's Creed Unity - PC Performance thread

Do you mean button prompts? DS4 Tool basically allows the DS4 to spoof an Xbox 360 controller. I don't think the game can reasonably identify the DS4 as a DS4. It will either see it as a generic DirectInput controller or an XInput controller, I think.

The game is apparently natively compatible with the DS4. Just plug it and AC Unity will display the correct button prompts.
Touch pad works as well.

I dislike the DS4 but more options the better.

Magic...

Confirmed as working

Got the game running nice at 1080p locked to 30fps with everything set to max apart from shadows on low, vsync off and bloom off.

FX8350 black at 4.2
GTX580oc 3gb
8 gig Corsair ram

Installed on a normal hard drive.

KingSnake

The Birthday Skeleton
I got to play just the first mission as I still wait for the download to finish and with optimised settings from Geforce Experience (Ultra High, 1080p, PCSS, HBAO+, FXAA) it ran at 50-60 fps with 45-55fps in cutscenes. I had also a couple of stuttering and one time drop to 27fps in cutscenes.

I7-4790s, GTX 780 3GB, 8 GB RAM, Windows 8.1 and the latest driver.

I will try more and play around with the settings once the download is done.

Apparently the solution for PC gamers is to simply disconnect from the internet:

http://redd.it/2m7ryt

It is butter smooth then. DRM is using the same processor core as the game, or something like that.

This would be weird if true. I assume that many PC impressions thus far have been from people outside the US, using a VPN to activate the game and playing in Steam offline mode after that (I would be one of them). I guess it is possible that uplay doesn't respect the offline mode though ... Anyone who played in Steam offline mode the first couple of days who can confirm that disconnecting internet entirely leads to better performance?

Ubisoft games still require uplay, so I'm guessing it wouldn't make a difference.

Tried it for a bit. No difference.

My system is:
i5 3470 stock
8Gb 1600Mhz
Asus 970

I tried to find a compromise for 60 fps but i just can't get it to be stable other that lowering setting quite a bit. With everything at the highest setting, 1080p, FXAA, PCSS, HBAO+ i get framerate overing around 45-50 in paris.
So i just started using half-refresh rate adaptive vsync with the aforementioned settings (i could add TXAA but i honestly don't like it in this game) and it seem it's doing a good job at delivering smooth frametimes. At this refresh rate i get 50% utilization on my gpu while the cpu seem to stay around 70-80%.

Honestly while it might be not delivering good performance i think it's an excellent looking game, one of the best for sure. I especially love the crowds, while the low LOD lessen the immersion the scope they add is amazing.

Some screen i took:

Made a short video showcasing the NEXT GENERATION TECHNOLOGY of AnvilNext:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yYa3TFiSops

LoD this terrible I have seen last time in...AC2 I think ? :D

Video was taken in 1600*900 with ultra high settings of environment and textures.
Taken on 2500K@4ghz, AMD 280X, 8GB RAM, latest catalyst beta driver.
The game has really nice lightning. The crowds are impressive (they have their own AI unlike crowds in Hitman games). Characters look great. But Ubisoft should have delayed this, polish the bugs and glitches and most importantly, optimize optimize optimize. We should not be seeing LoD as ugly as this in 2014, and we should not be seeing powerful GPUs struggle reaching 60fps.

This is definitely a bug and not intentional. This is the exact same low-LOD spot on my i5-3550/980GTX setup:

Stupid question: Did you restart the game after changing your texture resolution to Ultra High? Texture res is the only option that requires a restart as far as I can tell.

GTX 560, everything on LOW

It has, since the first day.

Thanks for trying, i was wondering how it would work on my card (a 560 as well).
It is definitely limited by your GPU. Both by its processing power and 1GB of RAM.

Edit: nvidia's recommendation for low settings is a 680

I'm no fan of Uplay and I know it's not beyond reality for DRM to cripple performance but if it was the cause of the poor performance in this case, it would have been widely known by now., I have to imagine. There are a lot of people who are itching to pin it on DRM and Uplay specifically.

Would anyone have complained if the game had 30-40% less NPC's? To me they are little more than obstacles on my path to objectives. The NPC count does nothing but accent the pop in issue. They are definitely the worst looking asset and that's without the clothes/gender/face changing glitch as you approach them.

Early in the game there is a segment where NPC's look a little "different" and there are very few of them. During that segment you get the highest frame rates that you'll get in the game when you are moving on the streets.

I was monitoring my frame on the streets and on the rooftops, it's like I added another GPU when I'm above the streets.

If you want to take an amazing looking screenshot in Unity, make sure there are no NPC's in the frame. I just don't get it, they really put in an effort to make the environment look great and then practically sabotaged the IQ with NPC's...

If someone makes a tweak to manipulate the NPC count, I'll be the first in line to get and I'm sure I'm not the only one.

I don't think NPC count matters as much as people think on the PC. The game would probably run badly even with all NPCs removed too. Check the framerate in the first rift, which I don't think had that many people, or the assassin headquarters which is a separate game space.

Holy shit it did make it better! I was able to run everything on High with FXAA and SSAO on and still get consistently above 30fps (hovering around 33-39, 33 when surrounded by hundreds of NPCs). Not a single dip into the 20's, except cutscenes.

Before this I get frequent dips into the low 20's. Nice now I can lock it at 30fps and enjoy the game while waiting for a patch.

i can't decide between playing at 60 (mostly) fps with environment turned down to high, SSAO, high shadows, FXAA, and bloom off (these settings get me 60 almost the entire time, even in crowds) or playing locked at 30 with all the settings at ultra on my 970. its driving me crazy.. thats the one thing about PC... too many options. What is everyone else with a 970 doing?

I'm getting consistent 30fps, but some streaming stuttering. I'll try turning off my internet, but if it doesn't help, what settings should I start cutting?

Did you just go offline in Uplay or literally turn off your internet? I'm playing on PC and wondering the best way to try this without unplugging my modem haha.

I disconnected my Ethernet cable Lol but I should try running it with Uplay offline and see how it is.

I'll let you guys know.

Fantastic news. I have pretty much the same setup: i7 950, 12GB DDR3 1600 RAM, Gigabyte GTX 970 G1. Slightly better specs but should expect the same performance at those settings.

Did the GeForce Experience update with recommended settings for Unity?
I did look at the GeForce page for the recommended settings.

Thanks.
I got a stock 2500k, so it must not be much better.

Anyway, with "softshadows" you mean PCSS or what?
2500k Should be slightly better than the 920. I actually had to look that up because in the NVIDIA techno jargon video they call it PCSS, but in the game it's just Soft Shadows.

It's pretty amazing how that 6 year old CPU holds up, even at stock.
I couldn't believe it, I really should overclock it considering how easy it is to do and I have a Dark Knight Cooler
on the thing.

I disabled my network card and went offline with uplay.
Same framerate as with online.

Same here, no difference being online, or without and the adapter disabled. For people that this helps maybe it's a glitch and they are now getting the performance they were supposed to be getting?

Yay so I bought this game and as an experiment I'm running it on my laptop which generally plays all my games.

It's a win7, i5 3320m 2.6ghz(not sure how to or even if i would want to overclock a mobile
Cpu), GT650 2GB with 8GB DDR 3. Pretty much well below the minimum requirements.

Running the game at 1366x768 all settings on low and achieving 20 - 30fps during gameplay which to be honest is better than not being able to play the game at all.

However the cutscenes hammer my fps, dropping it down to sub 15fps constantly and even down to sub 5fps for a few seconds.

Cutscenes GPU limited surely?

Overall I'm glad I can actually run it but here's hoping some post release optimisations are on the way...

Same framerate as with online.

If that was the problem on PC we would have reached the maximum laugh on PC, since those who pirated the game would run it flawlessly simply because of it being forced offline.

Crack the game to have it run faster would be the ultimate win since Starforce.
