Nvidia Launches GTX 980 And GTX 970 "Maxwell" Graphics Cards ($549 & $329)

Anybody tried one of these with an ASRock Z77 Extreme 6? Just curious because I'm not sure if I bought one of these would the connector for the SATA connectors get in the way. (It might be low enough that the card would clear it.)

I have that mobo and installed a 970 fine, but yes those sata connectors are a pain in my ass. Whenever i do work on my computer something gets unplugged unintentionally

Cool, thanks for letting me know. I'm not sure which one to get at the moment but at least that PC Part picker web page will let me know what will fit in my case. (Which means 275mm or less. Looks like the MSI one might be a good fit but a reference board or Zotac would go in as well.)

I have two gigabyte 970s and those ports had me worried. The cards fit, but the top one only just barely.

man i so want one of this cards but with all the problems people reporting about coil whines and fans not working i think i rather wait, the only games i really want to play with all the eye candy are the witcher 3 and the new batman, maybe by then all the problems are sort out and new cards might get announced, maybe the "ti" version of the current cards

Alright guys lets talk business. I just bought after reading all the bad reviews AC: Unity. I know I know I know I am a idiot. My specs are...

i5 3570k @ 4.2ghz
Gefore GTX 680 4 gig OC
16gb ram
2TB HDD

I know this game is poorly optimized and it shows considering I am getting with the settings slider on very-high 18-20 fps at 1080p resolution. Even changing the settings to low, the framerate remains the same. On games like Mordor, I can have everything maxed out and locked at 1080p 30fps minus normal AA not fancy TXAA. For Watch Dogs, I can have everything maxed out with TXAA1 and have a locked 1080p 30fps. If I buy this card the 980 will I be able to do everything maxed out with TXAA in Mordor, AC:U, Watch Dogs, and Farcry 4 at 1080p 60fps? Or will my CPU be bottlenecking my card or do I need to SLI?

If you guys say the card is what will make the difference. I will go out to the store right now and buy it. I will post pics to prove it. You guys are my deciding factor. Please help.

The GM204 is the complete ship so a Ti version is unlikely. Not every cards suffer from the issues you described but waiting is not unwise in any case.

MSI have released a new BIOS to fix the fan issue on the 970, no idea if ASUS made an official comment about coil whine on their strix.

I'm sitting there with my MSI GTX 780 Gaming, not really tempted by a 970 unless I spot a killer deal. It would not be much of a leap over what I have now.

i got a MSI GTX 770 4GB that has been really good in all games aside from ubisoft games, those i have to run at 30, so im not in a rush to upgrade, witcher 3 is my main reason to get a new graphics card, i have to play that game at it most beautiful, god i love the witcher :)

Exactly.

After GK104 / 680 came out, there was no 680 Ti.

The Big Maxwell GM200 (maybe GM210 since 'Big Kepler' was GK110) will probably be the GTX 1000 series, following a Titan II

If GM200 / GM210 follows the same pattern as Kepler did, then we may be looking at Titan II then GTX 1080 and 1080 Ti.

Just to let everyone know I contacted newegg about the free-game promo and even though I bought the card about a month ago they send me a code, they did say it was an exception though

I purchased the GTX 980. I used it for about an hour. I instantly noticed a difference in Call of Duty: Advance Warfare from my GTX 680 4gig. All settings maxed out and locked at 1080p 60fps. No hitches or stuttering. It was literally a smooth experience.

Borlands: The Pre-Sequel another smooth experience with everything maxed out at 1080p 60fps. Shadows of Mordor was almost the same except the fps would drop down to 57-58 but locked at 60fps about 95% of the time.

But these fucking Ubisoft games. Seriously what gives. Assassins Creed: Unity will stay locked at 60fps with everything maxed out except for AA which I have set to MSAAx2. When it gets to a cutscene it instantly drops to 45-30 range. I just don't understand why this game does this. Watch Dogs will stay at 52-60fps range with everything maxed out except AA at MSAA4x, but if I enable TXAA it drops to the lower 40s.

Is TXAA that demanding that a single 980 can't handle it or all Ubisoft ports just fucking shit? Or could it be my CPU (i5 3570k)?

What clock? Overclock that thing bro.

Well, my switcheroo 970 shipped from Amazon so I can get my free game code.

Now to play the 7-10 day waiting game (or sooner maybe?). Since I bought an Xbone Asscreed bundle, I guess i'll go for Far Cry 4. Just in time for the release of it too.

Have had my strix since September and no problems buzz or coil whine. Using a corsair 650 semi modular psu and a closed loop cpu cooler and I can only hear my junky bitfenix prodigy case fans at load.

Thanks.
I've been reading up a bit more and it seems that the MSI 970 might be even quieter than the Asus with better performance.
Hmmm...

hooray, I get to RMA my evga 970 ftw. It is constantly crashing (black screen or full computer reboots) whenever I play games after 15 minutes.

Aww. That sucks :(

Did you pay for their enhanced RMA crap when you registered your card? I was pretty shocked to see you had to pay a fee to have the option for cross shipping JUST IN CASE you needed to RMA a card. That's a little crappy imo.

nah, I didn't. At least I still have my trusty 660 ti for dragon age inquisition

So, EVGA SC ACX 2.0 GTX 970 is a card to go when buying 970? ASUS card has coil whine, what about other manufacturers?

I'm extremely happy with mine. I can only detect any coil whine at all when I have the case open and my ear is right next to it and I'm running something at hundreds of framerates, but honestly the fan on the power supply is louder than the whine (and my PS fan is quiet). For all intents and purposes I have zero coil whine, it's a total non issue for me.

I feel very lucky. :)

I noticed that my fans aren't moving, even when the temps hit 90c and beyond. gpuz shows 100% fan speed but fan rpm of 0. Tried using evga precision and it does the same thing.

So what's the difference between the GIGABYTE GTX 970 G1 and rev 1.0/1.1?

My card should be here tomorrow or the day after, I wonder if its anything major that I should worry about?

The rumours of the 8gb VRAM models were debunked and aren't happening, right? I want to make sure when I buy a 970 or 980 that I don't regret it 3 months down the line because the 8gb VRAM models show up and release.

If your fear of regret is high, I suggest avoiding pc gaming. Who knows what's going to happen with the 8gb cards, it's mostly speculation at this point.

If you want to buy an EVGA with the ACX 2.0, you should look at the FTW version.

All the other versions have a different radiator, with 3 heatpipes (and it looks like one of them doesn't even work), while the FTW has 4 heatpipes and a different design for the radiator.

Performance should be good on every model, but if you want the best cooling performance, the FTW should be the best when it comes to EVGA.

evga 970 acx 2.0 ftw.

That sounds broken.

However, the FTW has dual bios. The second bios out of the box is the "non-idle fan" bios. Basically the one that it originally shipped with before people claimed it was too loud and they wanted a "fan off" idle. You can try to switch to that and see if it resolves the issue. Could also nudge the fans slightly with the temps up like that to see if they start spinning.

The bios switch is on the back of the card. There are two switches, the first is to switch the active bios, the other is to prevent the bios from being overwritten.

If that doesn't work (or even if it does!) you should contact EVGA support and probably RMA the card (or RMA through the retailer)

Yeah, they had me try that already. Thanks though. Already doing the rma thing. Sucks, I bought the card for Dragon Age.

Anyone have any experience on the zoltac cards? They seem like the cheapest, and the only thing that people seem to say about them is they can be pretty inconsistent from card to card on tempertures

I just put in the 970. I too wasn't sure about the brand, and the main reason I got it was because it was only 8", which was perfect for my mATX steambox. That said, I have absolutely no problems with temps or noise so far. Seems great.

Don't see why there would not be a 8GB model eventually.

I was waiting for the evga superclocked 970 to come in stock at this store, and the day it did I was so busy that I couldn't go pick it up and now it's sold out. And the Zotac which was my plan B got sold too. I'm bummed.

And apparently the store has put the MSI card that I returned back on sale. Can't blame them honestly because they couldn't reproduce the unspinning fan problem when they thoroughly tested it (MSI claims they couldn't reproduce it too and I've read posts from people who were refused an RMA due to that.) Which leads me to suspect it's some incompatibility issue with some motherboards (PCIe 2?). I'm almost tempted to go buy it again and live with it and maybe hope a fix is discovered or released one day.

I'm not liking the idea of not knowing how long I'll have to wait for more cards to come in stock and possibly being more expensive.

I think it's a pretty safe bet that 8GB cards will show up next year (just my personal opinion, aka guess). Who's to say when though.

But then there is always something around the corner... YMMV.

I just ordered a Gigabyte G1 970 from Newegg. Can't resist a new toy.

Probably going to regret spending the money until I find someone to buy my 770. >_>

Someone in another thread mentioned that the new 344.75 drivers releasing in a few hours have added MFAA support for the 970 & 980.

Can't wait to test it out in a few games to see how it looks/performs.

Fuck this shit man. I don't think I can wait until Black Friday. If I buy my 970 from Newegg now, I'm covered at least if it goes on sale at Newegg, right (with Iron Egg?)? What if I get it from there and Amazon or Tigerdirect has a sale, am I SOL then?

There will be no price drops on 970s for black friday......I'm pretty confident in saying this. even if there are, they won't be gigantic..... but why discount a product that is flying off shelves right now and has low supply?

So I bought a Zotac 970, installed it but...the games don't run so well.
I used Shadow of Mordor, the game is basically unplayable because there are so many minifreezes and stuttering.
So I put back on High, and same thing, stuttering. Whit my 760, on High, I never had a single freeze or stuttering situation.

What are the other specs of your system? Which Zotac 970 do you have?

Try reinstalling your drivers. Clear out the old ones with DDU.

I have a i7-4770 3.4 ghz, 8 GB of ram.
This is my GPU:

Also, what is DDU? Before installing the 970 I uninstalled old drivers, then I used CCleaner.
http://www.guru3d.com/files-details/display-driver-uninstaller-download.html

I haven't used it yet but a lot of peeps in the PC thread recommend it. I would uninstall the driver in regular Windows, reboot to safe mode, use DDU, reboot and then install the new drivers in regular Win.

Ok, thanks, I'm downloading new Nvidia driver, I will do that as soon as the download will end, thanks. I'll post here later to let you know.

I don't know. Anyway I think my 970 is the same wattage of the old 760, at least by checking on some sites.

Just asking because your 760 didn't require two 6 pins to connect, perhaps one of your connectors has an issue.
