Starcraft 2 player disqualified from tournament because of rape tweet

It might not be a thread, but that doesn't mean it's okay.

I'm glad there IS uproar over this, as it gives the gaming community a chance to stop using this word so casually.

I completely agree!

Of course it's not okay. But some people seem to believe that genders aren't equal and that one can say something that the other can't.

Like I said before, rape is NOT something that should be joked about, or even brought up in light manner.

I'm sorry but people are just wimps nowadays. Didn't like what he said? Either insult him back and beat his ass at the game, or stop playing because you obviously can't handle a little trash talk. HE CALLED ME NAMES, WAAAHHHH! DISQUALIFY HIM HE SAID MEAN THINGS TO ME IN A COMPETITION! WAAHHHH. Good lord. People all up in arms over a weak and uninspired insult, calling for a lifetime ban....now THAT is offensive. Pretty soon people aren't even going to be able to play around with eachother and say anything that could be considered offensive by anyone anywhere. Sounds like a real fucking boring world to live in.

It would look real professional if the TO started shit slamming him back on twitter, as they took the decision to disqualify him on their own before she even saw the tweet.

No, it is.

It's contextual, and very similar in terms
Of this argument.

The same way some black people believe it's okay to say the N just word because it they are black is VERY SIMILAR to how some people think it's okay for a girl to say RAPE just because raped is mostly associated with females.

If a male says rape it's awful, and less accepted then a female saying it because it's mostly associated with them.

Same with Some black people thinking it's okay to say the N word just because they are black.
If a white person said it, it would be an out cry.

This is not opinion, nearly fact.
None of these views are mine.

YOU ARE INSANE.

Is it really that big a deal that you can't say the word "rape" in a PROFESSIONAL outlet? Really? You can still trash talk man, you can still use 99.9% of the words in the English dictionary to construct your trash talk. But if you can't use a select few words like "rape" or "fag" or the n-bomb its some kind of atrocity that is going to make the world boring? I just don't understand....

Did competitive martial arts for years. Lots of hugs and sportmanship.

Not nearly enough flowers though

Y'all need to make flowers part of your awards tradition! :D

Well, that all depends on how you understand the relationship between words and action. If I were a white American and I said to a black American "I'm going to lynch you," would it matter if I meant that "literally" or not? No. But it's a statement that draws its force and meaning from deeply rooted structures of violent oppression (i.e. "context"). Its "literalness" is irrelevant. And the fact that a word like "rape" would be used casually perpetuates a worldview in which the action itself is understood to be acceptable.

great analysis and point

I'm not in line with this. People who do and say stupid shit and then lose money over it typically apologize because they are sorry they are not making money anymore NOT because they feel they made a mistake. The world is full of transparent mea culpas. This guy should have been banned for life. He will be back and most likely laughing about it with his buddies. If anything, he needs to be told he had to attend rape panels (similar to drunk driving ones) if he is to come back.

It's nice that you have the ability to judge someones entire self from a single thoughtless tweet. Who are you to say the man cannot learn from this, that he's an irredeemable offensive beast? If you were to ban everybody who said something ignorant like this then there'd be nobody left in any field, people say stupid things and then learn from it when it's called out. Especially with how the use of "rape" has been used, it's hard to place complete blame on him for following a gross slang trend. Punishment is fine, I'm certainly in favour of taking the word away from that common context. But one should not be barred for life for such a mindless slip as this - the situation should be handled as a learning opportunity, not pure vilification.

it is so so so incredibly easy to look at a tweet and think 'is this okay to tweet?' and then decide against it. it is really easy to place blame on him.

He's getting paid to play videogames.
"Banning" him from that means he just has to play videogames for free. It's barely a punishment.

It's a downer at best

In his defense (god help me) his grasp of English isn't that great and considering how casually some people use the word "rape" in gaming circles it can be easy to pick up bad language habits. Like how a lot of non-native speakers say "fuck" more than they should, and more than they'd curse in their own language. Of course that doesn't make it more okay, but he might not have fully realized what he was saying.

This was my first thought too upon reading the OP. If the guy said instead "Going to dominate some girls soon #fragbitemasters", that doesn't mean break out the ropes, whips and handcuffs does it? I expect he used it in a gaming sense but didn't consider how it would come across to the world (assuming English isn't his second language).

What he wrote doesn't offend me but if I saw it originally I'd be be the first to admit that's not an appropriate thing to say.

you would make out to be a great judge, are you studying law by any chance?

I agree with you, he is in the wrong. But lifetime punishment to me suggests that the man cannot learn from his mistakes which I strongly disagree with.

Being incredibly easy to avoid doesn't mean anything if he originally didn't understand he was wrong. Now he knows.

you would make out to be a great judge, are you studying law by any chance?

Not at all!

Good.

I admit though that I used the word when trash talking when I was a teenager. But it was really stupid and nobody should do it, no matter what your gender is and no matter what gender the person you're saying it to is.

That said, people calling for a lifetime ban is just stupid too. People do mistakes, even stupid ones, sometimes. They get punished and they learn from that.

Agree with the ban, the highlight of his shameful activity, and his words being held up as an example of inappropriate behavior that the league will not tolerate. That is enough in my opinion but I am less concerned with the level of punishment as I am with this type of thing being universally denounced by the gaming community.
I agree with the descision to ban him for this, but I have to ask if his opponent was a guy would he still be banned ?

Anyone who uses the term "rape" at all needs to be banned in the future or else we have a double standard.
No, you don't have to ask.

I don't think that's necessarily fair to say in this context considering he is a professional player who has dedicated a lot of his time to playing the game. Personally I think he's paid his due and as long as he is appropriate with his words from here on out I don't see a problem with him competing again in the future.

Loved your fanfic post by the way, truly a work of art.

Um, professional SC2 isn't just casually playing video games for free. Most people have to practice for 8-12 hours a day just to stay competitive enough to hang at the top. He is paid to play because is better then most of the population, and has a talent and work ethic that not a lot of people possess. Just to throw years of this practice and work down the drain because of a tasteless tweet (that he already apologized for) seems excessive to me. The girl that he directed that tweet towards even tweeted, "After all of this I want to say that @cScKas said some really good things after everything. He is sorry. And I doubt it will happen again." so it seems like he is sincere.

I'm surprised he apparently didn't know Maddelisk. I haven't been following SC2 for a while yet still know her, she plays for Millennium.

I don't recognise Kas' current team (never heard of Cascade), but if he were still on Team Empire, they probably would've cut him from the roster already. This is not acceptable public behaviour for a professional player on a prominent team.

Pretty sure if a real professional athlete said he was going to rape another player in public, he'd be suspended for a long while.

Even Mike Tyson back in the day wouldn't say that.

At least it appears Cascade is willing to give him another chance. It could be worse, like another repeat of what happened with EG/Orb after his choice of words in ladder matches were outed in public.

Because back in the day, he never played competitive video games with immature teens :P

is this some sort of sick joke post? Mike Tyson back in the days said on camera he wish he did rape his ex and said he wants to eat a boxer he was competing against children.

I doubt it. Didn't George Foreman tell reporters that he was going to try and actually kill Muhammad Ali in the ring (I may have miss remembered).

Also, Ray Rice just last year only got suspended 2 games for knocking his girlfriend out.

P.S. I just google Mike Tyson trash talk and got some of these gems: 0_0
Mike Tyson: “[He] called me a ‘rapist’ and a ‘recluse’. I’m not a recluse.” (about writer Wallace Matthews)

Mike Tyson: “My main objective is to be professional, but to kill him.” (on fighting Lennox Lewis)

Mike Tyson: "Lennox Lewis, I'm coming for you man. My style is impetuous. My defense is impregnable, and I'm just ferocious. I want your heart. I want to eat his children. Praise be to Allah!" (on fighting Lennox Lewis)

Well, I do not follow sport very seriously but there were some case of Basket-Ball player that actually were (at least?) accused of raping and they were still playing, right? Kobe Bryant maybe?

Just as a point of clarification, it really depends on the videogame you're playing as a sport.

Dota 2 (PC game) had their annual big tournament a over the summer and the prize pool was something like $12,000,000.00 for the 16 teams invited. I think everyone on a team that placed higher than 5th got at least $250,000. Everyone 3rd place and up got a million a man, IIRC. Something like that.

So depending on the game you're playing, it can be more than just a downer. It can mean the loss of millions. If you're able to compete at that level.

None of those are him telling people he is going to rape a competitor.

Pretty sure Iron Mike told a camera man or reporter he was going to "fuck him" while calling him a "faggot". For the record.

That tweet would get him fired from a ton of jobs. It would also put a big black mark on his resume should any prospective employer inquire with his previous one about him. He's getting off light and his hours of practice and work ethic do not warrant it.

And yet he never said he would rape a competitor. That's the point of the post. He went extremely far and never said that.
yea because telling a competitor you are going to EAT there Children and saying you wish you did rape your ex Wife is clearly not crossing the line!

His team can cut him if they want too, that is different then banning him outright from pro gaming.

This is an incredibly poor argument. There's many things he hasn't said specifically, are they all worse just because of that?

I don't mind you arguing whether it's as bad or not, but spinning the fact of him not saying it as a reason doesn't work.

Yes, and far worse. You can't tell me that using "rape" in trash talk the way the pro gamer used it is worse then actually beating your own girlfriend and knocking her out.

I didn't say it was worse. I said that they'd definitely face a suspension. Incidentally, where's Ray Rice now?

It's not the same but marginalizing a heinous thing like rape (especially for "trash talk" in a fucking game) is definitely the result of a society that has a way of turning a blind eye to domestic abuse.

I'm not sure if you think I'm defending Mike Tyson or not--I'm not. I'm saying that someone who said they would rape their opponent and did so in a public setting would have received a lot of backlash and faced a suspension. How long? I don't know.

Everything Tyson said and did got a lot of backlash and for good reason. It was a way of pointing to things that the "king" of trash-talk had said in the past and use them as an example of how not to do it.
