I wasn't previously aware of the very, very racist parts of reddit.

Im not a reddit regular but I love it.

whatever I need I just type it and there is a reddit.

on top of my head I googled yesterday;

reddit gopro

reddit backpacking

reddit guild wars 2

reddit couchsurfing

- all were stellar. I dont know how you guys find all this creepy shit. I've heard of the blue pill or what it is, is some infamous woman hating sub forum. I'm fighting the urge to visit it. It's obviously shitty if it disturbs people.

I spend too much time on imgur collecting fake internet points, and people on that site HATE reddit. which is weird because imgur and reddit are connected like a scrotum to a penis - they are right next to each other!

Reddit as a community is awful.

I do like the idea of subreddits, but the garbage still leaks into them (much like the garbage from /pol/ leaks into other 4chan boards) and I can't post on them for too long without getting sick.
It truly doesn't, they censor a lot of things. Out of all these imageboard and imageboard-like places, it seems ∞ and Ponychan of all places have the most free speech.
∞ is pedophillia central, so I don't doubt it.

should we post our race before commenting on threads now?

ps i'm white

It colors the perception of 'anyone should be able to say anything' when one isn't under constant attack just for the color of their skin both IRL and online.

So yes, race is relevant to a discussion of a site that favors allowing attacks and threats from white power groups because 'free speech' but has no problem shutting down certain subreddits once big Hollywood studios threaten to pull their clients out of AMAs.

Seriously, just knowing that there are some people out there that would want the ISPs to censor content scares me; a free and open internet had a lot of stuff you don't like, but it is important.

This is coming from a Jew that is tired of hearing "gas the k*kes" on some of these places quite regularly. Even with these hateful comments, not seeing them on the Internet doesn't mean the sentiments will go away IRL, so why even think about censoring the net for the sake of, at the end of the day, pointless "protection"?

I don't even know where you got the idea that people want ISPs to censor stuff in this thread

Funny thing is that Reddit is based in San Francisco of all places.

I just visit what I enjoy and ignore the rest. But if people have beef with the place for its policies, fine by me. It's a relevant criticism.

Nobody is saying ISPs should censor content.

Reddit is being criticized for letting creepers use them as a free megaphone.

not surprising, racism is everywhere, and Internet being the world's landfill will only amplify that shit. Isn't Stormfront still active?
YES. I stumbled onto it by accident because in the UK we have an Apple authorised reseller called Stormfront, and I accidentally ended up on the racist site while trying to look for available openings at the store. -_-

Its always interesting to see how oppressive people just love to be, like they thoroughly enjoy it. Youtube really makes no sense at all because why take the time to search up videos about Australian Aboriginal models just to start shitting on the entire culture and letting the world know your hatred for them? I just don't get the reason why.

This implies that it was different before.

Edit: Since the site once allowed childporn on it, it should surprise no one how disgusting reddit is.

Absolutely.
It wasn't child porn. It was "jail bait" photos of clothed girls under 18. I think it was fucked up and should have been shut down immediately, but I think just calling it child porn puts up a different imagery.

I like Reddit. It's a fun place to visit.

To be fair, I only go there to see what is trending on the front page and then I visit /r/aww for kittens and puppies.

It's completely up to you to go visit /r/spacedicks if that's your thing. Tis a silly place and I don't recommend it.

The front page of Reddit is a lot like Gaf. The good stuff stays on the front page and the unpopular stuff will disappear.

Reddit is ok if, after registering, you immediately unsubscribe from all default reddits.

I have to say, /r/askhistorians is an amazing example of what Reddit can be, because the mods there remove probably 80% of all comments due to the high standards they keep. So in that subreddit its worth it to read the comments!

Persons recruited into hate movements often come from broken situations or families. Someone convinces them that a third party, in this case a race, is the reason for all their ills and they buy into it. They feel like they have a 'family' to belong to now. They're hurting others to cover up their internal hurt and to gain favor amongst their new peers.

Ironically, these hate groups that often yell 'free speech'? They'll often kill or maim anyone that tries to leave them. So much for all that free will they spout, eh

Damn, is the latter true? What the hell?

Yeah I was about to say. If it were child porn couldn't reddit/it's founders get shut down or something similar?

and the school would remove it if it found out. social circles are uncontrolled circles which ins and outs.

does reddit allow antisemetic subreddits? and I mean actual blatant nazi subreddits

Reddit isn't a school. It's a hangout spot. People use it to hang out and talk about whatever and reddit doesn't stop them just like the U.S. doesn't stop you from spewing stupid shit in the sidewalk.

There are racist people on every site. There are racist people on GAF. They just don't have an outlet to talk openly about it, unlike on reddit.

Not sure why blatantly racist/misogynist subreddits don't get the banhammer, but I don't know the intricacies or reddit's policies.

Maybe your thoughts on the subject if you have any

Not really much to say that hasn't already been generally expressed. I don't really care what people do as long as they keep to themselves, but once people start spamming or harassing other users then it becomes a problem, so I think the Reddit admins should have at least handled the latter.

But he did post something that responded to a question. Perhaps you should attack FyreWulff, who posted the original question "Let me guess, white?" if you feel strongly about off-topic posts?

When somebody comes into a thread only to complain about someone else's post, it stands out

But feel free to attack him all you want, I'm not interested

The way it seems is that it's better for Reddit's bottom line to be as hands-off as possible.

Run by libertarians that believe they're now the leaders of a new form of government.

Yes.

A metablog upvote/downvote software is now a form of government.

No elections, tho

There's a reddit called /r/cutefemalecorpses or something like that.

Someone go there and find out if it still exists.
Accidentally clicked a link leading to that last week. Seeing the sidebar image and then reading what the sub actually was called gave me literal shivers.

The reason is because we consider ourselves not just a company running a website where one can post links and discuss them, but the government of a new type of community. The role and responsibility of a government differs from that of a private corporation, in that it exercises restraint in the usage of its powers.

Jesus fucking christ

i don't see how dismissing someone as 'posting white' is relevant at all to a discussion of free speech on the internet.

I went there to see if it was still up not intending to click on any links and not thinking that images would be displayed on the main forum. Bad idea. Yeah, it's still up. Don't go there.

It wasn't a dismissal. Considering the poster's post history, I was seeing if anything about them colored their perception. Because, unsurprisingly, the biggest 'but free speech' are the people that are subject to minimal amounts of speech directed at them simply for existing.

It's easy to wave a battleflag when you're not in the trenches, in other words.

"Let me guess, white?" is very definition of dismissal come on.

Reddit is only as good as the subs you visit. Sadly any sub that gets big sort slowly goes to shit, with too much fluff and not enough content.

I actually like that Reddit is fairly lax about what isn't allowed on their site, since it allows the site to be a good place for freedom of speech and expression, and just because you don't agree with a conversation doesn't mean people shouldn't be allow to have it. Plus, having any sort of negative conversation at can allow the outside to have a chance to participate, where most sites directed to a single topic can have a huge echo chamber effect.

Oh so you looked at the clip I posted from the White Supremacist movie "Gran Torino"?

"Let me guess, white?" is very definition of dismissal come on.

It is quite clearly dismissing his viewpoint on the basis that he could be white. I don't agree with you often in threads that pertain to race but I will here -- with the caveat that other than the first sentence in his response, the rest is actually true.

I loved how they tried to explain themselves from removing naked celeb pics. So blatant racism, and posting dead kids/women pics on their site is all good, but we have to wonder about "Our souls" if naked celebs were posted?

They are full of shit, and anybody who visits that site and give them ad $$$ need to check themselves.

Who would you like to dictate what is "too much" free speech?

When creeps are allowed to indulge in child porn. When hate groups are allowed to recruit new members, spread hate and encourage violence. And so on.

For a site to allow any of that is repulsive. Free speech should not protect people who seek to do these things. Nothing good comes from it.

I'm fine with there being "anything (legal) goes" discussion places to compliment more moderated places like GAF. I think it would be bad if there weren't a place like that, even though I vastly prefer discussing things here.

Reddit is what you make of it. You can find some interesting or helpful subreddits once you get past the repetitive jokes. The admins could shut down some of the racist or otherwise questionable subreddits (like they did when Anderson Cooper talked about the "jailbait" one), but I guess as long as there aren't lawsuits they probably don't care.

I didn't knew about those Subreddits either, but they also were not a suprise to me.

I mean, Guys, this is the Internet, it's the Megaphone of Hate Speech and the one place where racist and other fucked up people find other people with their beliefs.

That's why i try to not dig deeper than i am, because some of the things are really disturbing. that cutefemalecorpses-subreddit for example
