Name three 3D platformers thats better than the Sonic Boost Trilogy that isn't Mario.

Crash trilogy
Spyro trilogy
Ratchet & Clank original and future trilogies

All better than the Sonic boost trilogy.

From what I've played of the titles in the OP (admittedly little), they are hardly 3D Platformers anyway. They have more in common with 2.5D games than 3D Mario games.

Oh and is no one going to mention Maximo? Amazing and tough 3D action platformer!

So you made a thread and asked people's a opinion, they give it and then you laugh it off? So what exactly was the point if your qualifies are the only ones that matter?

Because Sonic needs defending! These lame-os on GAF don't understand that the rest of the genre just can't keep up with what amazing blue blur of speed.

Are there 3D platforming parts of Rayman Origins and Legends I'm forgetting? They used a 3D engine but the gameplay was definitely 2D.

As much as I like Unleashed and Generations it's not hard to find better 3D platformers.

Colours though - I loved that game to death, for me it's on par with Galaxy and the other games in the olympus of 3d platformers, which is composed by mostly games that are all different each other, so I would have a hard time saying which one is the best. tl;dr: R&C, Sly, Ape Escapes, Spyro are all the other 3d platformers I consider on Colours level. But I'd say that Rayman, Jak and Crash are some serious contenders, along with a lot of names that popped up in this thread

Too bad I've never finished Psychonauts nor had the chance to play Banjo games. I need to get a 360 once it's dirty cheap and play them!

For all the hate it got, Blinx 2 was a charming platform-adventure game and I enjoyed it. Got more hate because of Blinx 1's mediocrity and the whole "Mario Killer" codename

On topic, since I dislike platformers where you're just stuck in an open world and you have to find stuff, and I much prefer linear obstacle courses that are more about platforming, dodging obstacles and the like, the only non-Mario 3D platformers that spring to mind that I might prefer to Colours and Gens (fuck Unleashed) are Crash 2 and 3.

Also I don't know why people are listing sidescrollers.

Rayman Origins and Rayman Legends are in 3D:

You don't move on a 3D plane. They're sidescrollers.

Donkey Kong Country 2
Donkey Kong Country 3
Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze

Generations is a great game, but it's bogged down by some level design quirks and lackluster 2D levels.

Rayman 2, Crash Bandicoot 2......erm......shit that last one is hard. I'm sticking to one game per series so this is extra hard. Yeah I cant think ofa third. Well I can think of loads better than Unleashed.

Croc is fun but damn, controls like shit, stiff as hell. And yeah, I beat the game multiple times collecting all gobos and getting to the secret island.

I'll fight you

Gamergators should use Croc as their mascot

Also I don't know why people are listing sidescrollers.

Don't you understand? The game is rendered in 3D so that obviously makes it a 3D platformer. Obviously. I'm so clever, I totally changed the definition of a genre to make no point whatsoever. Haha, look at you all.

I've heard of not reading the OP, but you apparently didn't even read the thread title, bro.

If we're playing it fast and loose with the definition of a platformer:

Rayman 2
Psychonauts
Mirror's Edge
Sunset Overdrive
Crash Bandicoot 1 & 2
The PSX Tomb Raiders
Super Monkey Ball 1/2 (Is it a platformer if you can't jump?)
American McGee's Alice series
Maximo
Bionic Commando

Will wait for the retort from the Sonic fan implying how shitty my taste is.

Ratchet & Clank series
Spyro PS1 Trilogy
Jak & Daxter (Not the horrible sequels)
De Blob 1 & 2
Ape Escape Trilogy

No mind you I loved Colors/Generations, but they are not nearly the best platformers. Also Unleashed was horrible.

Ratchet and Clank (ps3 trilogy )
Prince of Persia: Sot,WW and 08
Assassins Creed Ezio Trilogy
Jak and Daxter 1-3
Banjo 1&2+ Conker's Bad Fur Day
Sly 1-3

I'm not a fan of open 3D collectathon platformers. I prefer my platformers to be linear and straight to the point, so I genuinely do find this hard.

Every Jak and Daxter game
Every Sly Cooper game
Every Ratchet and Clank game
Every ND-developed Crash Bandicoot game and a couple that weren't made by them
Rayman 2 AND 3

Also, half of what makes Sonic Generations memorable (and a pretty large part of Colors as well, now that I think about it) are the 2D (gameplay-wise) stages, so I feel that 2D platformers are absolutely on the table for this discussion. And in that case....does a list really even need to be made?

The point being made is just that these Sonic games are dominated as both 3D and 2D platformers.

Well, my point at least.

Most of the Ratchet & Clank series. I haven't played them all but all of the ones I have were better then the Sonic games I played in the OP.

With that said I really enjoyed Generations and thought what I played of Colors wasn't bad.

If I want really linear platformers I would forgo the class of games like the OP mentions or even the crash games. At least collectathons are something different, linear platformers just seem better in 2D.

EDIT: Mirror's Edge is a neat choice that uses 3D in a more meaningful way than the boost trilogy. So does Maximo I'll retain.

I'm glad you got around to making that point instead of just listing 2D platformers because I don't even know where we'd be by now.

Here I thought you were just cleverly ignoring the "3D" in the OP because haha suckers

Almost anything that started off in the 3D plane is better than the speedrunner series we got for Sonic. Mostly because they fit and started off as collectathons (Banjo) or are linear in paths (Crash).

The boost games, Adventure games, and the 2D games are so different, that they can constitute as different franchises if you stick a totally different non-Sonic mascot on them.

Mirror's Edge
Jet Set Radio

Coming up short thinking of a third here that I liked more than Generations. I would take ME over any Sonic though, it's my favorite platformer of any kind.

Croc is fun but damn, controls like shit, stiff as hell. And yeah, I beat the game multiple times collecting all gobos and getting to the secret island.

The controls make it what it is, probably the best 3D platformer so far. I can't know about PSX but it was brilliant on PC with keyboard.

Man, the list would be shorter if you asked which ones are worse.

Does JetSet Radio count?

What about Oddworld, Mirrors Edge, Tomb Raider etc?

What happened that suddenly made everyone think Sonic Unleashed was a good game?

Even if you consider the boost to win sections good (which I don't) half of the game is boring Werehog sections.

-Popular Responses-
Ape Escape Series
Jak & Daxter Series
Ratchet & Clank Series
Rayman 2 [I think is a great 3D game and wish there were more entries after 3.]
Banjo Kazooie Series
Crash Bandicoot
Spyro
Psychonauts
-----------------------------------------------
My response to all of these is "WHY?" So if we're to compare playing through those three games to these you would get a better experience from these sluggish double jumped stuffed adventure titles? How are they better games? Does the controls feel as smooth and satisfying? Can you push the design to it's limit? Can you push yourself in these games? Can they possibly deliver the rush or feeling you get from the other games? and how so? Why are they better?

You're not really making a case as to why Sonic's iterations are so much better. People need something to argue against.

No Billy Hatcher?

Yeah. I even mentioned JSRF, as for OG JetSetRadio, fuck no, the controls of that game is so bad, and the physics were beyond terrible, and while JSRF is a lot better, it still can barely handle a half pipe.

I will update it to give you that.

I still like the game. Played it a lot but man, that shit was so stiff on PSX. Jumping was stiff, depth perception was hard, few cheap sections, variety was not great. Was a great first effort for 3D platformers during the time but stuff like spyro and crash were much better frankly.
