Uncharted 4 Gameplay Demo [Up: Sony - Was running at 30 fps]

So my wife is as crazy as I am :-p

She says brother Drake looks like a Pixar movie with really good graphics and Elise looks like a VHS of a red head.

Not sure why Drake would look like a Pixar movie, Pixar only creates cartoony designs....

I can't shake the feeling of disappointment with this. It doesn't seem like a generational leap at all and whilst the cutscenes, particularly in the end with Sam look great, the overall visual fidelity isn't what I expected. It certainly wasn't any where near close to the colossal standards a ND product has been hyped up to be. Visually anyway.

Gameplay looks fun. They aren't veering away from the old formula minus the Tomb Raider grapple/rope mechanic which they have copied remarkably closely.

All i see is a wonderfully stylized model with what appears to be proper sub-surface scattering, wrinkles, sweat, blemishes, more detailed mesh, textures, etc vs a fucking mannequin from Madame Tussauds fucking wax museum.

Alright now THIS GUY looks like he came straight from Madame Tussauds. Holy shit scary bad.

That's how I see it too, Drake's brother is way more believable, the one on the right is just your classic videogame doll.

I think you should be weary of your hope. Scrounging up an extra 100% performance for an alredy good looking game in ecosystems with already low level APIs and mature graphical technqiues (people have been working with post shader model 2.0 for how long now?) is kind of a pipe dream.

Rather I imagine they will unlock the framerate near release and itwill fluctuate depending upon screen complexity quite heavily.
At this point I'm just expecting them to push visuals and stay at 30 since no one from ND has commented on the framerate target despite lots of questions about it. Really stupid move to announce aiming for 60 before they were 100% sure they were going to do it since everyone expected Uncharted to be 30fps anyway in the first place.

Well I kind of got used to it to never trust any reveal trailers/gameplay demos.

Ubisoft does it, EA does it and numerous other game studios/publisher's.

I think the only one's that I have never seen doing this are Bethesda and 4A Games

You can't trust Bethesda's game will even work.

Pre-alpha stage + same old engine. GOW3 firts reveal barely looked a little better than GOW2 (same PS2 engine) with washed out textures. Hell even the demo had less detailed characters models (small polycount) worse aliasing and textures. Ther final build looked like another platform beyond the first reveal and still beats many current-gen games.

This is how I feel too. The Gamersyde video makes a lot of difference, but the game just doesn't look as good as I expected.

It is pre-alpha, though, which is something tot ake into account.

This is a good point. Of course, different studio, but remember the leap between UC1 reveal and final?

People need to chill out.

I'm still amazed. Had the Gamersyde video running on my TV and I just imagined holding a controller while it ran. Felt great, and I can't wait to see more varied locations.

Because it's a big console exclusive and a very popular game. It's cool to hate on anything popular.

E.g - this thread over 2000 posts, Zelda thread over 2000 posts

Edit: actually over 3000 posts per thread. My bad
And yet the initial teaser was mostly praised. People have high expectations and Uncharted is known for it's graphics.

i can't believe that there someone who really think AC Elise models look better than the Drake's Brother... lol... not sure if for stupidity or fanboism.

That's true, but GoW3 was promising much grander things than it ever delivered too. Remember all that bullshit about levels being on completely dynamic Titans? No playthrough would be the same? Levels would randomly shift and totally change the combat? We got a far better looking game, but a far less interesting one too.

Maybe GoW3 looked bad because it was going to be something actually radical, but they were forced to make something rote because we demanded prettiness.

Maybe ND had to abandon 60fps because expectations for the graphics are too high externally, and they're concerned with the reception.

Huh, I wonder if Sam is a biological son of Sully's? (Admittedly, he would be Sully's slightly shifty son that wasn't mentioned in U3, and who possibly hangs out with Trevor Philips on weekends.) Sam's hairline is fairly distinctive design choice, and surprisingly there's not much of Troy Baker in Sam's face, except around the eyes. Regardless, it's kinda like 'whelp, Sully's retiring from this adventure sorta shit, have a younger version with a suspiciously similar hairline.' Either way, colour me intrigued.

I'm on Team ND here, but it's not entirely fair to compare Unity/U4 - Unity's faces are more stylised, whereas Uncharted goes for semi-realistic faces + stylised eyes. Elise's hair is lovely, but goddamn at Sam's face. His worn-down teeth, his chin stubble, the lines on his neck, those slightly faded tattoos. He's got realistic muscle motion happening around his mouth/ jaw when he talks, and there is also follow through with his chin, all the way down to the muscles in his neck. You can disguise models with wrinkles to a certain extent to make them look realistic, but it's still not effective if it's just constant open/shut puppet motion - it isn't easy to make them move right. Sam and Nate have some really subtle motion happening, it's great.

it's not close, yeah.

But this gameplay demo also ain't close to their initial reveal trailer, so I'm interested to see how close they can get to that goal when the game is in a finished state. Quite a distance yet to go

They will mostly likely get close in the cutscenes but not during game play .

My impression of UC4 went up a bit after I downloaded a nice quality video of the gameplay. It definitely looks nice, but, again, I still feel a bit underwhelmed. I guess the same UC gameplay just doesn't excite me. Fans of UC have every reason to be pumped up, though, because it looks nice!

I also noticed that many things about the look of the game remind me of the remastered TLOU on PS4 -- which is not saying anything bad whatsoever -- TLOU on PS4 looks quite good. I wonder if they're using some of the same tech (I imagine they must be).

Graphics are definitely closer to mid to late 2000's CG though, which is still impressive. I always wanted to see The Incredibles running on a console, and now we're here!

No, not at all. No video game is even close to mid or late 2000's movie CG. Not yet. Ever see "King Kong" from 2005 -- as someone else pointed out -- it looks well ahead of UC4.

Well, I'm having a tough time deciding between these two shots. Elise gets bonus points for hair that obviously Steve Drake is not going to match, but when I was playing Unity I thought the other models were not up to her standard.

The one on the right looks horrible compared to Uncharted, seriously. Is that a bad screen?

Thanks. Your post just inspires constructive conversation; though with me being a stupid fanboy I'm not sure I'll be able to keep up.

Who actually did announce the game being at 60? I know the trailer released at that...

Come on, this guy isn't even that old. I find this objectionable.

But I agree with your general point.
Hah, he definitely isnt that old. But his face is darn wrinkly!

I totally agree. Sacrifices had to be made not only because of hardware but mostly due to time and manpower. You just don't translate your visions in game by just clicking on one button.

GAF's very own Meyer!

"I think that's what we want to push for with anything we're doing on this generation" said Meyer. "That's sort of the mandate from when we were building the PS4 engine. Let's see if we can do this and hit it. We hit it with The Last of Us Remastered, so why not stick with this?"

My son (seven) agrees with the majority. He asked me if brother drake was a real person. Fuck.

Asked him about Elise, he said "thats a game dad, remember. She's in the game you play"

Sooooo....inconclusive!

Time for me to get glasses

That is a compressed image, theres another better image in the last few pages. I suppose i'll have to edit the new image into the old post if no one is reading the last few pages.

No no no.

Look at the picture.
One is plastic-looking (but still good)
The other one is REAL-LOOKING.

There no way someone would prefer or even judge BETTER the AC Model.
Evidently there is someone that prefers the one you do not prefer.

They can be technically wrong on which one has more tech in their face but in the end it's a product of artistic direction and not just technology.

I don't even know why this is even a discussion. They are both LOD0 models and are used in non-interactive parts because that's when you actually will be able to see that stuff.

I believe this has been their attitude on it since the start, right? A "lets see", "aim for it" approach. I don't think they've ever flat-out said it will be 60fps.

couple of more

The dude in the last shot (on the right) has no eyelashes. Lmao.

Well the models are more than just a head. I disagree with most here and my seven year old son, Elise is still a better character model.

Does anyone have a full body shot of Nathan's brother or are we comparing faces only?

I need to win something

It said pre-alpha, isn't that, like, WAY early in developement? Like we have at last a working thing and still have to make it pretty and smooth? I mean, it looked incredible for being a pre-alpha and amazing if it was released tomorrow. They can only improve the thing.

Exactly

Drakes Bro looks absolutely realistic with all the showings of age and other natural things.
She looks like a doll - Unrealistic.

People shouldn't get forget this Alpha
This is Naughty Dog - Uncharted 3 looked a lot different/worse than the final product too.
Uncharted 4 will be the most beautiful game of all time the moment it gets released.
We will probably have the same cycle as last Gen where only Naughty Dog can raise the graphicsbar with each new game.
And people really should learn the difference between in-Engine(E3) and ingame and especially if its an alpha build.

Btw - For a Pre-Alpha build this game ran a lot more fluid than most Ubisoft Games ;)
