Final Fantasy VII Announced For PS4

Tbh, considering the state of modern day Square Enix, I'm not sure they would be able to do justice to a FF7 remake. I would more trust Mistwalker to produce a proper remake than I would SE.

That said, this port sounds lazy and is definitely not deserving of a special announcement. Both SE and Sony deserve all the flack that they're getting.

I'm disappointed it wasn't more than it is, but really? They are bringing the game to the system, and that is much better than nothing at all, which is what we had before the announcement. Apology? That's just fucking stupid.
No, we deserve an apology, we weren't asking for a port, they know we were not asking for a port, they have known for a very long time.

If SE doesn't want to spend money and resources on a FF7 remake, then how about sony ponying up some money and splitting the costs in half.

It's bound to make money for both sides.

I guess it took the audience some time to realize that they have been had badly. When they did he already had left the stage.
I was honestly sitting there watching this like ok cool

Any second now they are going to switch over to the new graphics and updated look

Any second now.... Any.. Wait.. It's still looking old... Noo they can't be this dumb? Could they?

You, we, deserve an apology for Sony bringing a game to PS4 with trophies that is incredibly popular and not on the system currently.

Do you realise how pathetic that sounds?

Just to be fair, they haven't said this release will have trophies. Just because its the PC version doesn't mean it will have them.

The trouble with remaking such a huge game like FF7 is that it would just be visually remade, you couldn't change what the core game was about as it won't be the same game.

And we all know if it happened people would still bitch about it someway or another.

You are suggesting that they 'lost' the assets for the biggest game they ever made. A game that spawned numerous spin-offs and a movie.

I just don't believe that at all. If you have something to suggest that is true, please post it.
You're looking at it from the mindset of a person living in 2014, after the great success of the Final Fantasy series.

There's not much concrete information on the internet that can be thoroughly sourced and traced back to its origins, but most of the knowledge about FF7 assets comes from the PC port done by Eidos way back in the day. Going back to 1997, the port was difficult because Square had disbanded the FF7 development team the moment the game went gold (finalized copy gone to print). A number of the artists for backgrounds, sound engineers and whatnot were contractors, so once they were released from contract they weren't obligated to assist on fixing or improving assets for the PC port. Square didn't standardize (or have a best practices) for their development teams until after they realized all of the problems from the PC port development could be avoided if they straightened themselves out. Subsequently, assets for FF7 haven't been stored because the practices of doing so did not come about until AFTER everything was lost.

Even then Square was sloppy with their storage practices; Nomura said the original data for Kingdom Hearts the first was lost, so the HD remix had to be built on assets they ripped from the final game copy.

I read an article a while back about game development in Japan (I don't remember where I read it). The piece referred to the mentality of Japanese development in the 90s, which is that the developers had a mindset of 'building a game' so each game had its own engine, built from knowledge from development on previous games but not on the code of the previous games themselves. With that sort of mentality, it's not unusual to think that developers would toss out all of the 'old stuff' thinking they would never need to use it again.

Of course, in the present day that sort of idea seems stupid, but in the 90s they weren't so concerned about preserving their assets and code for future use because they didn't think there would be a future use.

Didn't Capcom lose their REmake assets as well?
I bet Capcom doesn't have the original stuff for RE psx either.
I'm not too familiar with Capcom's development, but a rudimentary search reveals that they had the original assets, but even their original assets aren't nearly large enough to accommodate well for HD. Moreover, REmake was released in 2002 on Gamecube; by that time developers were probably getting into the idea that they should probably be more careful with their development assets. Sure, they probably don't have the original data for RE PSX; they have the data for RE Gamecube.

Every PS4 game has trophies. It is mandatory.

That does sound plausible, and they wouldn't be the first, but didn't 7, 8 and 9 use the same engine? Or were they all really build from the ground up each time?

What's the point of even bringing it? There isn't one. You can play it on an aged computer, you can play it by downloading the original PS1 version from PSN.

There was no point to port it and there was no point to say "We're releasing FFVII on PS4" when everyone thought that meant remaster. It was a giant troll.

Sucks so hard they can't do a remaster. I mean they could have at least redone the sound effects. They sound so bad :(
My dream ff7 remake would have used advent children assets.

Square Enix just shot themselves in the foot.

I don’t know how much the rest of you know about Japanese culture (I’m an expert), but honor and shame are huge parts of it. It’s not like it is in America where you can become successful by being an asshole. If you screw someone over in Japan, you bring shame to yourself, and the only way to get rid of that shame is repentance.

What this means is the Japanese public, after hearing about this, is not going to want to purchase these Final Fantasy VII ports, nor will they purchase any of Square Enix’s other games. This is HUGE. You can laugh all you want, but Square Enix has alienated an entire market with this move.

Square Enix, publicly apologize and switch these graphics to HD towns or you can kiss your business goodbye.

I was wondering if this had been posted.

Glad to see that it was.

Because it is one of the most loved games of all time. It is my favorite game of all time speaking personally. It is not on PS4. Those without a PC cannot play it with achievments /trophies. Those with just a PS4 cannot play it at all.

I would have loved so much more, but this is vastly better than nothing, and I'll take a PS4 trophy version, even though I own a PSN copy and the Steam copy.

Think people must know they messed up as there is no mention of it on the eu blog, despite listing almost everything else!

I for one am happy with this as I will get to play a nicer looking version, then the current pal one, on my vita. Will only buy if trophies are In though.

Square please do a limited retail release to make up for your mess.

Yep exactly the same :)

There is a good argument to be made here about how badly a remake of something as dated looking as FF7 could go wrong/lose its charm.

But I think most people thought it's going to sell gangbusters, Square Enix should have at least tried a modern graphical approach and been critically examined with an attempt. Rather than just worry about the fear of botching it. They could have met us with a compromise of keeping the blocky/charming graphics somewhat, but putting effort into improving backgrounds and character models to an extent where it isn't just going to look like an upscaled port.

Just slapping in trophies really is the bottom of the barrel shitty attempt. Especially after releasing that tech demo for the PS3. The game deserves better than this, even if it was a meet in the middle attempt at reworking some of the graphics.

FFIX entered development well before VIII was finished (different teams and different countries altogether... IX was developed in the United States), so I don't think they used the same engines.

They do reuse their knowledge and some data, of course, just not the actual engines. For example, the experience points chart from Final Fantasy III was reused exactly as-is for Secret of Mana and Xenogears.

Even then Square was sloppy with their storage practices; Nomura said the original data for Kingdom Hearts the first was lost, so the HD remix had to be built on assets they ripped from the final game copy.

Yeah, they also seem to have lost the assets for FFX, since the credits for the FF X|X-2 HD Remaster mention Vincent Hamm in the Special Thanks section. Vincent Hamm was the fan who released a 3D Model Viewer program for FFX way back in 2009.

The meme has never been this appropriate.

can somebody explain to me if this is a troll ( I don't think it is), then what is the point of it? they just decided to piss people off for shits and giggles or what?

After relentless badgering from fans, it's probably all Sony could get SE to do. Guess Sony will take anything over nothing for the FF7 hype train.

While I'm sure they know it'll piss off fans, it's still going to sell gangbusters and make both of them easy money.

Who knows maybe it'll lead to the PC version of FF8. Which I guess I'll cave in and buy as well.

Saw the title I was like...wow they're desperate.
Saw the OP then I was just laughing.

Never knew SE can sink to this level of low. And that youtube video has a ton of dislikes, been awhile since I saw a video with that many more dislikes over likes.

Guys, there was no troll. They've never teased a FFVII remake, the internet just made these things up.

FFVII was a popular game in the past, won an award recently and Square's doing this for fans or people new to the series who want to play it on a modern console.

This would've gotten much less hate if they hadn't put Hashimoto on stage and if one of Sony's reps just announced it quickly, but Sony probably thought (correctly) that it would be more appropriate to have Hashimoto up on stage announce it, given the big impact FFVII had in the past.

Oh yes there was a huge troll.
All the introduction, all the suspence and big words, the huge logos on screen, the green lifestream rendered in HD in the background.
Everyone on stage was mislead for more than a minute into thinking it was a BIG announcement, not a port of PC version based on the original Psone code.
This game didn't deserve its own presentation,it should have been announced by Boyes or Gio Corsi in one of their lists.
Don't know what the parts involved were thinking but both Sony and Square did a mistake with the presentation. The effect they achieved was fooling their fans and creating misleading hype in a stupid way.

I'm still laughing at what happened! Bringing the PC Port to the PS4 ahahahaha this has to be the biggest trolling event in the history of videogames.

My expectations are in check now. So how much effort would it have taken to re-render the maps, backgrounds, characters, NPCs, items, attacks animations, summons, dungeons, and in game cgi to 1080/60 FPS it would be alot! Time and money, who would put it up?

I don't know itll be nice to play it. I just think many people expected way to much. Including me.

Similar announcements got similar treatment at that conf, but the FFVII logo should never have appeared behind him before after the trailer.

I'm crazy, I know, but I have a very hard time believing they'd do a troll like this without having a remake ready for an E3 announcement, maybe even with a hint in the PS4 PC port in spring.

They MUST have known this would pass people off to no end.
