Say goodbye to your little amiibo friends........

Ffs guys. These are toys, and as such, you either treat them as tous and don't care, or you treat them as a collector and preorder those you want or all of them. Nintendo's characters, including Pokemon, are literally hundreds, ofc they can't stock them all, and ofc some will have limited runs, while others will be made for a while, it's common sense.
And for those who say that Nintendo must announce which Amiibo will have limited supply, use common sense again, ofc Shulk will be more rare than Toon Link.
What i do is buy all i want and ignore the rest, it's less than the price of a game each month.

First I hear the Marth, WFT, and Villager amiibos were discontinued. Then I hear an NOA employee says that none of the amiibos have been discontinued yet. And now this is saying that they are? WHICH ONE IS IT!!?

I feel lucky I was able to pick up Villager. As others said it would've been nice to know in advance which ones are standard and which are limited.

Hi guys I'm buying a Wii U when my daughter turns 2 in March next year.

I'm in a gaming store here in China and they have loads of Japanese Amiibo. Are they region free? I'll be getting a U.S. Wii U.

And should I buy multiple Marth, Villager and Wii fit trainers?

They are not region locked so you can buy them from anywhere.

Ya they are region free. Yes buy as many as you can, marth is selling for 80 and villager for 50. If they are done then the price will rise. Your daughter can get more wiiu games with the profit

Glad I'm not trying hard to collect them all, I just got lucky by snagging all wave 1.

Less stress just walking in a store and not caring if they don't have the chars I need.

I do hate that scalpers will buy alot of them up and re-sell on ebay though.

So, can anyone clarify what's going on with Wave 3 and the retailer exclusive then? I can't figure out where to go to in Canada. Shulk is EB, and the rest? Walmart,BestBuy,Target?

That's true for every collectible though, and the situation with Amiibo is very mild. You should see collectibles sell out in 5 mins after they got online for preorder, and then scalpers on ebay having them for sale in 4 times the original price on the same day, even having half a dozen copies each when the site sells only 2 per customer. Amiibos are a walk in the park, what i'm talking about is mayhem.

You know how Guitar Hero and Rock Band peripherals were really expensive? You know how they aren't anymore? I know that part of the reason for their drop in price is how much space they take up, but come on.

Skylanders and Amiibos will normalize. They're in a bubble right now. They're just pieces of plastic. It's not like the Amiibos are particularly well-made. They sell for a low MSRP and Nintendo is still making money on them.

There will be a year when Activision doesn't put out a Skylanders game. That might be the same year they give up on the franchise altogether. Patience.

Disney fans are crazy though, Infinity figures might hold their value forever.

Been wondering the same thing. So many conflicting reports on this.

Very true.

Shit like Amiibos will never be valuable in the long term. They have limited uses as well and will degrade in value as a result.

Another good example is Yugioh cards. You would think the original Yugioh cards would increase a lot in value over the years right? Nope...you can get the three Egyptian God cards for like $20 bucks. The new cards they release actually have more value while they are new then the future down the line.

Same thing will happen to Amiibos. And if Nintendo wants to foolishly make their Amiibos very limited and never go mainstream? So be it. It's their loss and a total missed opppretunity.

I shoulda bought more.

Also what's the word on Fox? Is he a rare one too? My local Best Buy has like 2 Fox left.

Pretty fun, right now I don't have a dedicated shelf for them (gonna buy one probably during wave 2 or 3 once I have more). Just got them lined up chilling on my vertical sitting PS4, shortest to tallest. Kirby is just so cute sitting up front with dat Kirby Smile

IT"S BOTH! TRUST NO ONE! THE TRUTH IS OUT THERE!

:P

I'm going to Target tomorrow to see if they have any of the rare 3. They did last time I was there. And it's a relatively podunk town...

Can't believe the prices Villager & Marth are fetching. I love my Villager.

Also, is this a joke? $20,000 for a legless Peach. 108 bids. It must be people just messing with that auction. Right?!

edit: I caved and preordered Little Mac from TrU on eBay...

Why even include NFC in Wii U pad and N3DS if 99% of the buyers can never use that feature? Ugh :/

Truthfully, the people who want only Marth, Villager, or Wii Fit are probably nowhere near 99% of amiibo customers. (Unless I misunderstood, if so I apologize)

A Ness figure. Out of box and may have some wear and tear. Not very useful.

I know, but still they are pushing amiibos and NFC hard with Wii U and N3DS so it doesn't make sense to have a limited numbers of them. Why even make games use it?

Because only the characters that nintendo expected to be least-popular ran out this fast and became speculator-bait. there's no indication of the rest going out of print any time soon.

Good way to create demand wit OCD collectors. I'm happy with my Yoshi but can't see myself ever wanting another one. The opportunist in me wants to horde them though but I couldn't be bothered.

This whole Amiibo thing is a nightmare. I'm thinking of canceling my Mega Man Amiibo and just forgetting about the whole thing all together. I wanted to pick each one up as I had the money to get them but knowing I'll have gaps in the collection just puts me off.

This was illogical though. They released 12 for the first wave, right? The second wave is coming out this month, with more to come in the following months. They are not going to be on shelves long given that there is only so much shelf space to stock these and you can only fit so many on a rack. You can't equally stock Wii Fit Trainer and Mario and Link, since one of those isn't likely to sell much. Given shelf space, I think it's a given that you're going to see popular figures regularly and lesser known ones not as much. This type of product was bound to have scalpers that would pick up limited release figures to resell at higher values, but Nintendo pretty much has to make sure Mario and Link and Yoshi are available because those will be the most desired by the public. Given shelf space, Nintendo's only option is to release not as many per wave and space the waves out longer.

Welp, guess I'm not collecting them all if I can't do it at my own pace.

Holy fuck Nintendo what a shit show. I'm not asking you to keep unpopular characters like WFT on shelves forever but at least make enough that I don't have to buy them all at fucking once. Normal people cannot afford to do that.

Got Villager and Pikachu so far, guess that's all of wave one I'm getting.

As long as Nintendo eventually releases an alternative way to make use of the Amiibo's game functionality (like cheaper cards like I remember them mentioning), and ultimately having an actual figurine is merely for collection sake, I don't mind the shortage of figurines.

I just want the fucking Spinner in Hyrule Warriors. :(

Would love a card alternative.

Are these going to go up in price or something?
What's their actual sell value. I'm hoping a lot higher if you're trying to make a point.

Sorry for the people that have missed out. I'm so glad that I'm not bothered about Amiibo at all, otherwise I'd have been going nuts at the limited availability.

What's really making me sad is apparently Villager isn't popular, despite Animal Crossing being huge and definitely my favorite Nintendo franchise. :(
The appeal of ones Animal Crossing avatar is that you can customise them so a Animal Crossing figurine that doesn't look like ones own villager may not appeal to the Animal Crossing fans. Also the fans who played New Leaf have moved on to the better looking taller look whereas Smash villager is based off of the old stumpy look.

Don't try to make-up excuses for them :P

Marth I can understand, Villager, stumped version or not IS the main protagonist of one of their best selling franchises.

The fact that the less popular ones are already sold-out even BEFORE christmas shows that they underestimated the appeal of these characters, they definitely should restock, let the christmas period roll , and then decide what's what.

The people who saved up on purchasing Amiibos and Smash Wii U for christmas will just get the short end of the stick and that's bad as much for Nintendo than for the potential consumer.

The funny thing is, I actually bought a Villager Amiibo specifically to customize it. I also talked with some other people who were looking to make their Villager Amiiibo the female version.

Obviously, not everyone is gonna have the resources or drive to modify their Amiibo...but it still sucks that it's further limited by the lack of easy-to-come-by Villager figures.

Probably. There are a few legeless Peach auctions up.

I forgot how quickly factories in China could badly sculpt, paint and teleport these into stores...

They can't be done for Christmas now, there is no time. This is probably why Skylanders launch in October is so there is time to do a second run just before Christmas.

UK GAF, it looks like Wii fit trainer and Marth are back in stock on the UK Nintendo store if you're after them.

http://store.nintendo.co.uk/amiibo.list

Edit: Doesn't this pretty much disprove that they are discontinuing the less popular figures? as a number of the figures have been restocked just now...

Edit: Wii fit trainers are all gone again.

This just discourages new customers who were on the fence to start from collecting them at all.

No it promotes long term sales. Collectors will buy them all moving forward because they will see them as a safe investment. In truth though you can't keep feeling the self with the same toys over and over again expecting them to sell. Try looking at star wars toys, you will see there a new line every few months.

This just makes me not want to buy any because now that I missed some I'll never be able to get the ones I missed at a reasonable price. The fact that these have actual game benefits makes that kind of unacceptable IMO and makes me not really want a Wii U or their first party games, either. Why bother if they're just going to screw over potential customers like this?

"Doesn't make sense?" What? This makes perfect sense. The demand for a Villager amiibo is going to be absolutely zero in the next couple of months. Do you think they are planning on a big villager amiibo integrated game soon or something? No.

This first batch is literally made entirely for Smash Bros. They are keeping on the "big ones" because they're usable in other games. Who (apart from diehards) will want to go out to the store to buy a Wii Fit Trainer amiibo come February?

It's not worth it for them to keep manufacturing ones that are going to have a limited window of demand (the next couple months). That being said, sure they could have made a few more in the initial batch.

Completely agree. No one is going to be wandering into Target to buy a Wii Fit Trainer amiibo a year from now.

If you guys thought you would be able to walk to a store and see all 48 amiibos lined up neatly in alphabetical order then you're kidding yourself. Of course the hardcores are going to snatch them up when they first come out, while the more casual fans might grab Pikachu or something down the line. They could have pushed out more in the initial shipment, but I think everyone's a bit surprised at how well they are selling.

And LOL at people saying "I was going to buy all of them but now I won't get any!"

"Do you have a Dark Pit amiibo?"
"Nope, sorry all sold out and we aren't getting anymore."
"But I need it to complete my collection of four dozen plastic toys."
"Maybe you could buy it for a higher price online."
"I already spent $560 and now I have to spend an extra $15? Fuck you Nintendo, just fuck you."

Nintendo, still the best friend of scalpers and collectors who resell their deliberately limited stuff at exorbitant prices.

Still haven't bought Smash due to the GC adapter fiasco.

Maybe I missed something there but I was still at 'some of them will be discontinued past the initial shipment because : popularity'

If they buy smash bros a year from now, why wouldn't they? That might have been me in a year.

Those are just the consequences of not buying a game close to its release date. Some toys, and in fact some games, are lucky to still be on the shelf after a year. There's always online. We have no idea how the price will fluctuate with these things. The prices for Marth are pretty ridiculous now, but that's only because demand right now is high. Next year at this time we could be enamored on Zelda Wii U's amiibos and Half Life 3.

And you mentioned earlier that you were on the fence about collecting them all and now you don't want any. That sounds incredibly silly to me. You were willing to drop nearly $600 for a complete collection but if you aren't willing to pay a bit more for ones you missed? I think collecting all of these is a rather infeasible goal unless you have some money to burn. It's kind of like collecting all the Pokemon from scratch.

Wow this thread is making me wanna go out and buy Marth, Villager and Trainner. Marth is okay since I wanted to have FE characters eventually but the other two I'll probably keep them sealed.

Most games these days are pretty easy to find even long after release thanks to retailers like Amazon. Shelf space really isn't an excuse anymore.

I was going to collect the ones I liked over time, and if that's not an option then they just won't have me as a customer at all. Likely for their hardware or games if they continue to tie these figures to the games themselves. It's essentially DLC that can sell out. That's terrible.

Its weird how if marth and villiger were in stock everywhere they would sell poorly. Lets face it people want what they cant have and i fell into that trap. Then i realized i dont even want them, the lure of being discontinued blinded me

I really don't understand this argument that if Nintendo is sold out of some optional figures that have game functions that you will not be a Wii U in the future. Really?

The Wii U has been out for 2 years now. The prices have been so low that jumping in has been more than reasonable. Big hits like MK8 and Smash are out. They won Developer of the year at the Video Game Awards. It could be argued they have the best current library.

If the argument is you can't get an unlock able skin or a small in game function that was a bonus this is nothing new. Games often come with preorder bonus that if you missed out you can't get back.

MK8 is just as great with or without Too Link. Every vanilla Smash was great without added content, this one is no different.

If missing out on 3 of 12 figures is going to prevent you from getting a Wii U, I doubt you really were going to jump on board anyways. Just my opinion but the drama over limited merchandise is getting to be a bit much.

Edit: they could have never kept shelf space for 36 figures. My Target barelycan hold 4 of the 9 available ones right now.

It is also rumored the RFID codes are able to be put on your cell phone and used without a figure.

Like someone said Marth and Village would have sold horribly if not limited. I bought them all but if I were picking and choosing they would not have been my preference and I doubt others

My local GAME had 2 Marths left, (Birmingham Bullring so a fairly busy well known one I'd assume), bought one of them, maybe I should have been a bastard and purchase the other one too.

Will trade the sealed Marth for sealed Villager :(

I don't even have the game yet because I want the GC adapter :(
