36 minutes of The Order 1886 gameplay (offscreen)

Then don't listen to me. It's that simple.

I:SS may have reflected color from people in some areas and not in others.
That's not really true either. It's in every section, it's just that the reflections are generally pretty dark and people in the game almost always are wearing dark pants - bot those that are more colorfully dressed clearly show that in reflection. Don't listen to you? What do you mean, I was just correcting you on something I noticed you were wrong about. If you don't want people to do that, then you're definitely on a wrong forum.

I actually asked their rendering lead on twitter if they are using SSR or a similar IBL and geometry system like in "remember me."

Hope he responds!

You asked Matt Pettineo? Let us know his answer please :)
Character reflections seems like they are obtained from capsule skinned to the models like their AO method, they are visible offscreen.

That is a pretty good idea actually if you keep all of the metals really glossy (super gaussian!) and have environments that are confined.

EDIT:

BTW, darkened / uncolored reflections can occur due to "reflection occlusion" or whatever it is called:

Naturally it's more fun to play games for yourself, but it's easy to look at a game and roughly gauge how complex it is, how much depth there is, whether there are any interesting design decisions. Doesn't seem controversial.

Sure you can have some impressions from watching a game on youtube, but as you said, you can only ROUGHLY judge its mechanics. The comment I was originally replying to was full of hyperbole, saying things like barebones, shallow mechanics and "minimalistic to a new level". Those comments cannot be made until you've played the finished product.

This game looks absolutely phenomenal. They should have simply released this video from the very beginning. There looks to be a good variety in gameplay, with stealth, shooting, hacking, even the QTE's look fun and well done. It's all tied together with incredible atmosphere, great voice acting and an interesting story and setting. This game could be amazing if they can sustain it through the whole game.

The gameplay looks so solid. Overall, RaD did a very good job :)

But what bothers me is the QTE takedown. I thought I could use knife or machete to stab dudes and cut their throats, not punch them in the face :(

Really surprised tbh. Everything I saw about this game, the gameplay looked really clunky and bad. But since PSX...my views have 100% changed. Gameplay looks really solid. Game looks fantastic.

It's now on my radar as one of my most anticipated games. I just hope the story is good, and the game isn't too short. But yeah. Really surprised by this.

Just finished watching it. This game pisses me off already. Incessant gameplay cuts, mini-games, narrow corridors, having to wait for the NPC to open the doors and so on. It's a shame because some of the fights have some punch to them thanks to the sound effects but the game reminded me of Heavy Rain more often than not. Doesn't help the player was crap.
The NPCs didn't open a single door in this footage.

Goddammit.

I was hoping they would get rid of the fucking letterbox display mode.

Letterbox completely ruined Evil Within for me.

Seriously, I'd rather them drop it to 900p instead of this letterbox shit. Ugh.

Yup. This is the best looking game ever made. No game on any platform PC, PS4, Xbox one etc looks this good. It does not matter if technically its not the best. Visually its unparalleled. Nothing comes close. Not metro, not crysis nothing.

Gameplay looks serviceable I guess? Nothing OMG about it. Seems like pacing and story can save this one from mediocrity if done well.

I don't want to go there. You can have your opinion but there are several things that detract from it being on that pedestal (especially comparing it to PC games that can push 4k visuals). One of them being the game can't even display the full 1080p.

Please post a video of any PC game that looks better visually! I would really like to see.

This is the new posterchild for shallow 'cinematic gaming'. Nothing but walking through barely interactive highly scripted sequences with the occasional room full of chest high walls and the most basic third person shooting I've seen in years thrown in just to remind you that it's supposed to be a video game. Absolutely nothing special outside of the graphics.

Agreed. I actually said something similar, it was an outrage.

Considering that RaD has always tried to avoid spoiling the game as much as possible, I believe that there are some set pieces they don't want to show to people yet. Maybe this demo doesn't have any OMG moment but that doesn't mean the retail version doesn't either.

If you say so. What constitutes "non basic third person shooting?" It's shooting, what else should be there be? It reminds me alot of the Last of Us. And there's still alot of the game we haven't seen. I think this is the kind of game that you have to play through for yourself, to make any kind of judgement. It's meant to be taken as a whole experience.

I am just going by what has shown. I will be super happy if what you say is true. I hope for the same.

That is not a nice or even intelligent thing to post. Come on now mate, be realistic.

Also, this thread should really be about the order...

EDIT: is there a link for this thing anywhere?

Percival opens one door late in the vid. But yeah, that's one time, not every minute.
My mistake. But yeah, most of the time they wait for the player to open doors and find the path. They aren't constantly telling you what to do or hovering an objective marker on screen.

I was looking up some crow recipes months ago for this game...

Looks like it will come in handy^^

It's still a polished, yet highly derivative and uninspired cinematic third person shooter. It's pretty, it's beautiful, but there's simply not much interesting game design-wise.

The shooting is far above standard. There's real weight, impact, and recoil behind it.

All I really want is to see areas like this brought to life and let me explore it a little bit

I wonder if people will say it's "nothing special" after playing areas like that. I certainly have never played a game in this setting. I just love how people get all hyped up for Call of Duty, Destiny, Titanfall, Battlefield, etc, but try their hardest to shit on a game like this, that is doing a setting and story never before seen.

Not according to people who have actually played the game.

How is it "uninspired?" What does that even mean? What is an example of "inspired" gameplay? This game has completely original weapons such as the Thermite Rifle, The Arc Gun, The Air Shotgun blast, etc, yet it is "uninspired"

It also has some of the best art design I've ever seen in a game.

Yeah, I am sure we will (MUST) see much more of foggy London.

goddamn the music is so good

my god the graphics. between this and DriveClub, holy fuck

please will you please and the whole of GAF stop mentioning DriveClubs graphics, i really really dont want to buy it hehe! Goddamit i know im going to buy it this weekend :(

Cant wait for this game - looks amazing :D

Games that are more dynamic and give you lots of tools to play around with. Compare it to the demo for Uncharted 4 for example. Much more open design that treats the level as a combat playground to run amok in. Hardly any cut scenes either and no QTE's.

I love that kind of dynamic combat (similar to what Halo did for FPS), so naturally I would love to see more of that here.

Uninspired, generic and such are just catch phrases for I want to shit on this game but I can't really figure out how exactly. As soon as the devs called it a cinematic shooter or whatever it was destined to be shit upon by a lot of people and this was the angle they were going to come from.

Well I was responding to VFX and It is my opinion. Nothing touches this visually. Maybe not technically but visually most certainly. It was also a honest question and not meant in a mean tone or sarcastically. I am really curious when he says PC games at 4k look better because I have seen atleast 1080p vids of PC games running on max settings and not look nearly as good as this. So I am really curious what games actually look better.

Anyways back to Order gameplay - I dont think the stealth is really that good from what I saw. Would love for more options and pathways to take while stealthing. I think the sounds and the shooting looks really really good so atleast the core shooting seems super fun. Now my only hope is there is a good variety of guns that add to the fun. Want to see the tesla gun in action.

I can't wait to see those parts.

I don't think you will, in those incredible visuals this is PS5 material, not possible on current gen, be happy that we've reached a time where you can play a game that looks like CG, even if the scope is not as big.

I remember one of the trailers showed a stealth sequence in the outdoors. I imagine that would be a more open environment with more options as to how you can approach taking out the guards

There are larger areas with lots of NPCs and crazy vistas. If people are going nuts over this, their heads will explode come full release.

Wait and see.

Where is the blood?

Why are things not destructible? The door frame didn't even shed any bits whilst getting blasted by a shotgun?

Not good enough imo. Whilst it's great in many areas, I thought the tech behind this game was supposed to cover these better than other games?

Let's hope stuff like this makes it into the final game...

It sure was fun as all hell, the only other game I played that was even close at PSX was Drawn to Death. Even after going hands on I have more questions than answers, good example was the lycan melee fight that is supposedly all gameplay and not just a cutscene which is definitely something different and interesting. There are a ton of weapons that have not been shown and Andrea has already gone on record saying there are more open areas to travel through. We have barely seen any of the physics and some of that is also supposed to impact gameplay in certain areas. There is a lot still to be shown and all of it is pretty damn interesting.

What kills me is after playing both the Order and Bloodborne when people say how excited they are and how amazing and great the gameplay is in that game it leaves me completely confused. Releasing Bloodborne in the same month as the Order would have been very bad for Bloodborne and the Witcher also dodged a bullet. I have been trying not to say anything about Crow but there wont be one in the sky when this game is released.

That's something you don't want to bet on.

I haven't ever played an pc games at native 4k (I have downsampled quite a few though), so I cannot comment in a direct fashion about current PC releases at such a res. And yes, this game is fantastic looking given its hardware and its framerate. I can only agree with you that it looks great, whether it is the "best loking game" however is wholly up to opinion... at least we can comment on what it is doing technologically.

(BTW, if you are looking for graphically impressive PC games, you may want to take a look at a certain game or basically anything made on a certain engine)

EDIT: seriously I cannot find a link to this video anywhere.

The pacing seemed really spot on in that demo. If nothing else this game seems to understand the flow of action and variety that made UC2 really special.

There seem to be plenty of options when it comes to combat. The game is being painted as an on-rails shooter when that doesn't seem to be the case at all.

Just in this very cramped environment, you can take dudes out with a sniper rifle, or run downstairs to take them on up close. You can switch between sniper and close range weaponry at will, throw grenades, the normal options that 3PS games allow. Plus there's the variety in the gameplay mechanics, what with stealth, hacking, etc., I don't know, I'm seeing much more than the most generic third-person shooter ever.

Kinda stupid we have to make do with off screen footage of a really bad player, Sony should release some footage and send it to gamersyde, I mean why would you not show one of your best looking games in the best light?
