May ask for everyone's top 10 shmups from last generation (Wii/360/PS3)?

Late to the list warz. This is my top 10 that changes pretty much every week

  1. Mushihimesama Futrari ver. 1.5
  2. Akai Katana
  3. Dodonpachi Saidaioujou
  4. Deathsmiles
  5. Crimzon Clover World Ignition
  6. Eschatos
  7. Ketsui
  8. Muchi Muchi Pork
  9. Espgaluda II
  10. Raiden IV Overkill
I have a feeling that DOJBLEX and Battle Garegga will probably show up there soon because I've been spending more time with them and I'm having a blast.

Steel Empire for the 3DS will be on sale for $15.99 on the NA eShop starting tomorrow. Any impressions? Worth picking up? I read there are no online leaderboards so that's why I'm hesitant.

Definitely worth it. $30 was kinda pricey for no retail but $16 is spot-on. Very packed game. Easy but fun. Usually takes about forty minutes to do a run.

This makes me realize that I have no one from shmups GAF on my X360 friends list. I have no great replays attached to my name, but if you wanna share leaderboards and the like, add me at "Jotamide" in X360, PSN, and Steam. :)

I'll add you (though I might have you?). In any case I tend to play offline more recently. And moving to Korea shortly and not sure if I'm taking a 360. I'll probably take my shooters and pick up another J-360 in Tokyo, though. Also, feel free to drill into my friends list to find other shooter buddies!

GAF,
I love R-Type Delta on PS1. How comparable is R-Type Final on PS2?

Thanks!

There's no comparison. Final is a slow, boring mess.

There are lots of cool ships to unlock, which I found to be a fun meta-game onto itself, but I'll warn you the play action and level design of the actual game leaves a lot to be desired.

Hey guys, I got Crimzon Clover a couple days ago as part of that Steam sale. I've played a couple hours so far and really enjoy, though the transition from an iOS shmup player to a stick is little...humbling, lol. Anyways, I'm looking for some scoring tips. Should I primarily be locking-on, or should I mostly be firing my primary and only locking when there are big groups, or what? I think I understand scoring somewhat from the OT, but I'm still not totally sure the best way to play.

Dang. Highly disappointing but thanks for the reply!

Boy I am NOT good at this game, hahahaha. So far I've been able to make it to stage 3 on one credit, but after that I just get decimated. :lol But then, I've only tried two characters so far, so I've got a lot more experimenting to do.

Really fun game though! Probably enjoy it more than any of the other Japanese shmups I have for PS3 (which at this point is everything but Ketsui). Loads of variety here.

(As a side note, I'd reeeeeeally love a sale on Ketsui. Please, Play-Asia?)

It has a good old-school vibe. Like the PC Engine shooters. Just all amped up and a bit more complex with the multiple button/shots. I love the game. Total gem.

Any chance of english on the Asian version...not expecting but wondering?

Nah, no English. All the menus and important stuff are in English, but as for the story and such, nah, Japanese all the way. Game didn't even come with an English instruction sheet like you often see in Asian versions.

I did notice one thing, though. The X and O buttons are reversed to the "proper" US/Europe layout in the menus, but the on-screen prompts don't change to reflect this. I don't know if this is an Asian version thing, or if it just adjusts based on the region of the system you're playing on. Threw me off a bit at first, though.

The Dreamcast SHMUP, Redux: Dark Matters, that was released earlier this year is finally hitting Steam. There's a 20% discount for early purchasers. Brings it down to $9.74

No sure if I wanna throw another $10 at it, TBPH. Wonder if they will tweak the visuals.

To be expected. Yeah, the contextual button-thingie was in the j-land version as well.

How's this game overall? I never care when they release these homebrew things as overpriced Neo Geo carts or Dreamcast discs, but for $10 on Steam it sounds reasonable.

Cool stuff. Next, I wanna see NG Devteam on Steam.

I just saw that Kamui and Alltynex Second both hit Steam yesterday, completing the trilogy (along with RefleX, which has been up for most of the year).

Now if I don't much like RefleX, should I be interested in the others at all?

Can someone provide a list of must have shmups on Steam? Thanks.

Edit- I used to enjoy many shooters on NES, Genesis, and PS1 such as

1942
Zanac
Gradius
Life Force
Side Arms
Thunder Force 2/3/4
Air Buster
UN Squadron
Raiden 1/2
Strikers 1945 1/2
Einhander
Soukyu Gurentai
Aero Fighters 2/3

Satazius is pretty solid. Jamestown is okay. eXceed range from decent to solid.

I redeemed my code but I still need to download and install. Too bad they didn't implement trading cards. Oh well, it's nice to have the best of the bunch available on steam finally.

Based on that list, you DEFINITELY want Satazius. Maybe check out Ether Vapor Remaster too.

Anyone mind giving me some advice on Caladrius' scoring system? I just made it further on one credit than I've ever gone (stage 4 boss), but my score was way under my best. I also notice I'm getting those leveling chips way more slowly than I should be. I'm obviously doing something wrong, but I'm not sure what.

Kamui is out on Steam along with another Shmup whose name escapes me atm.

I personally like Raiden 3 despite it being a simple port.

I knew I would need a palate cleanser after Sakura Flamingo, so I grabbed Ginga Force & Eschatos Wonder Pack.

That's a total of eight games, and with the yen so low these days, I feel like I got away with something.

I buy my imports from CDJapan these days, but all the usual suspects should have these two in stock still. Protip: If you want your stuff in a timely fashion, use EMS shipping. These two were actually separate orders placed weeks apart that arrived on the same day. SAL took two and a half weeks, EMS four days.

How much was the double pack? I did some math and it was cheaper copping the individual Wonder Price re-releases of Ginga and Eschatos than the actual double pack lol.

They list it for ¥8,300 (which is around $69). Mathematically the two are cheaper separate but I didn't want to mess with that. CDJapan doesn't have Eschatos Wonder Price in stock.

Drop EVERYTHING and play that Judgment Silversword.

Sakura Flamingo is not that bad. Very nice set of all those games for the price. And slick menus. I love the release.

While that is true, I payed the extra dough for the OST selection. Yousuke Yasui is too good a composer.

I intend to do just that. (With sprite limit ON.) I've had the WSC Rebirth Edition since 2003, so I'm curious to see how faithful the emulation is. One of the few games that I can do that with.

I listened to the CD, and some of that stuff is decent. I quite like the Eschatos tracks.

Faithfull as hell! You will never go back to the Wonderswan version ever again. Pull out that HRAP EX and enjoy! That bonus Cardinal Sins, too!
