Here's one brilliant mindfuck of a Ludum Dare entry, saw it on RPS

You can't win the game. It exists only to destroy your mind

I'm working on my preliminary GOTY 2014 list and it was a packed year with a lot of good releases, March and August were especially awesome games for myself.

Hack N Slash is something else. Way better as a hacking game than Glitchspace. The fact that you defeat enemies by literally lowering their health is awesome.

Curious about that. I should get around playing it :-o
Might be a GOTY list contender too for me.

Potentially some cool releases this evening. I am picking up the Talos Principle and since that game is releasing two hours later then usual I might have to get me some Xeodrifter till then.

Anyone got any impressions of Distance? Wondering how that ended up.

I'm not far into the game at all, but I love it already. It feels like the ultimate sandbox game. For example, in an early puzzle, you have to manipulate turtles to cross a lake. The ideal way would be to change the idle behavior so the turtle travels an X amount of tiles and I just ride on its shell to reach the other side. Nah, I just decided to make the spawner spawn a hundred turtles at 2 second intervals to completely flood the lake with turtles and causally crossed my turtle bridge

I hacked a bird enemy to do -100 damage and increased its attack speed to insane numbers to essentially give me infinite health because it would follow me around and its attacks would restore my health instantly if I got damaged

Charging enemy? Reduce its damage to 0 or reduce its movement to 0 so it can't move, or change it to friendly, or change its behavior to make it move in an endless loop.

Distance ended up as awesome as you hoped. Everything that made Nitronic Rush great on a grander scale, with a slick style. Tight controls, great levels, a nice amount of content already

Can confirm, Distance is tight. I can echo More_Badass. User Generated Content is insane already. Plus flipping your car onto different roads is a bunch of fun. Also also, there seems to be an actual story. In a racing game.

I will have my review and Let's Play up on Xeodrifter at noon today. Game is REALLY good. Like if Nintendo asked Renegade kid to make a Metroid good.

I read the whole "Game is only 45 minutes long" statement that's been echoed in the Xeodrifter thread is BS. How long would you say it is?

Cheers for the answers, final question though, support for local multiplayer? Got some mates visiting tomorrow and would love to get some future racing on potentially.

Refract owe you commission, cos you just made them a sale
:p

Seriously, one of my biggest peeves with current gen gaming is the death of local MP. Especially since I grew up playing stuff like Twisted Metal and Gran Turismo with my dad. So the fact that something like Need for Speed and so many other games went online only is pretty disappointing

Absolute echo those opinions. We were a Timesplitters household growing up and the decay of local multiplayer in FPSs and all genres really is a real bummer. Couldn't have been happier when last year we started having that resurgence of local multiplayer games like Samuri Gunn, Towerfall, Nidhogg, Sportsfriends and countless others too.

Cross posting from Steam thread. As it's relevant here:

If Nintendo asked Renegade Kid to make a Metroid game, Xeodrifter would be it. Everything that makes Metroid great is featured in Xeodrifter.

My Let's Play can be found here:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ygvew8U9Fyo

Shooting, platforming, areas unlock based upon items/power-ups, and an emphasis on exploration. What Renegade Kid has done is put their spin on it. Please excuse this quick aside but it should be noted that if you were given a bunch of pixel art styles along a police lineup, It would be very easy to I.D. Renegade Kid's animation. So, well done for having a unique and recognizable look with so few pixels. To segue Renegade Kid's previous work in here, if you've played Mutant Mudds or are aware of it's notable feature, the multi-depth parallax platforming works so amazingly well in Xeodrifter that using the buzzword synergy is appropriate here. There were a few times that the background just drifted off in the periphery of my attention, but thanks to brilliant game design, there are enemies or objects moving that punctuates the setting to capture your attention and give you that eureka "Ah-ha!" moment to make you feel like a genius. There are also times when you just need to be paying attention because there are power-ups idly sitting.

Speaking of power-ups, Xeodrifter handles weapon upgrades as points to your gun that you can repurpose at will and even create up to three quick-slot configurations to deftly switch in between. There are a few methods to upgrade your gun. You can make your bullets larger, shoot faster, do more damage, spread shot or do a sine-wave pattern. There are certain enemies, like Giant-Eye-Lazer-Death-Cube-Thing that can be dispatched quicker with the sinewave upgrade. So figuring out what works best in a certain aspect and one that is entirely decided by you, works hand-in-hand with the non-linear exploration of the game.

Also I didn't mention it yet, but traversing to the four different areas of the game is done via a small little spaceship. It barely plays any role outside of being a hub, but it's a very nice touch.

One thing that I find a bit lacking is the boss fights. So far there is just one boss that is varied each event. I am conflicted with this because there is enough variety, especially when you consider the parallax battling, and new "tells" that need to be learned to not feel stale. However, I really wish there were more completely original bosses. I can understand the amount of time to conceive and implement original bosses is non-trivial, so it is appreciated that the one boss continually finds new ways to make use of all of the power-ups. That is essentially the only negative thing I can say about Xeodrifter.

Lastly, the secrets. Yes there is a grid-based map. And yes, after you've revealed a secret it is indicated on the grid-based map via a special indicator. There are also a few easter eggs and funnily enough even though I would call Xeodrifter a Metroidlike as opposed to a Metroidvania game, there are early Castlevania Chicken-in-the-wall secrets to be found.

Also, I didn't know where to fit this so I apologize for that, but even the little details like the bullet particle effects and splashing in the water being dynamic is a great touch. Love the little details.

If you like Metroid or Metroidvania games, Xeodrifer is a no-brainer. You need to buy this. It will make you happy. I don't usually hand out guarantees* but in this instance, I guarantee* it.

*guarantee offered is for humor purposes only. I have no means of offering any sort of guarantee :)

Well my Let's Play is 50 minutes long and I only died at the 50~ minute mark to the boss. I'm probably 40% done with the campaign, based on the unexplored map area.

I don't know if it's going to be another hour of gameplay or what, but I don't think it's going to be very long.

Either way, I love it. Who cares if it's only 2-3 hours.

Can't wait to play Xeodrifter. Thanks for the impressions and video, had to stop after the first power-up, I know I'll love this.

Playing Rock Boshers DX, really great game with an expertly realised ZX Spectrum aesthetic. It's basically a twin-stick shooter from a top-down perspective. Will do a post later if I don't forget. Whether you get it on Vita (the version I'm playing) or Steam, it's super cheap, so catch it~

Unfortunately for the spaceship crew, this involves taking captures and defending the nest and territory. Jim Sterling did a video on Malebolgia...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Opc5wyHrgmg

Time to send in the copyright notice.

He wasnt really all that negative about the game actually, and most of his complaints were revolving around things that I mentioned previously as well. Mostly combat fluidity and animations.

Still, does a Jim Sterling video with that negative touch help or increase sales?

Oh I'm fine with the video, and at this point any exposure is good.

Though I still want to hit him with a copyright notice for the publicity. ;-)

Hit him, tiger! :p

But I can imagine it must be a bit hard to read such harsh comments about something you threw so much time and love into.

Seems like early access games are dominating these lists lately. I usually use the monthly threads to find hidden gem games I've missed; complete games I can play from start to finish and early access is kind of making that tougher >_< Feels like giving games game of the year awards based off their demos.

That's the nature of the beast I guess. Early Access is everywhere now - for better or worse. Some games I think it benefits, others seem to be using it for the sake of releasing a product they know is broken so get funds to work on it.

Who knows.

We're definitely GIF heavy though - I think that puts a lot of people off, pages take ages to load for some people.

Anyway - on topic. I'm playing Adventure Manager at the moment and it's... interesting. A little annoying in places, but interesting!

I tend to find most of the games from Screenshot Saturday and TIGForum, so they tend to have free alpha/betas/demos

Even so, games often get mentioned in the threads before most sites write about them. I'd posted about Deadnaut here before any site did an article.

And there are still dozens of releases that are finished to chooses from. More than enough that game of the year wouldn't have to go to an unfinished game

I have a bunch of LPs going up soon (for anyone that's into that.)

Bit Dungeon II is really good. Really good.

It's basically Legend of Zelda Link to the Past (overview, exploration, dungeon design, level design) there is a bit of Dark Souls thrown in, there is a beta online mode and bonfires/campfires (outside of restoring your health I don't know what else they do) and it's Roguelike. So there is permadeath. When starting out you can start with an additional life, so you technically get two lives before it's permadeath. I suppose it's also possible to find more lives.

But it's so good. I'll post the LP soon

Sounds like my kind of game, will be interested to check out your video.

Been playing more RimWorld lately. Haven't checked it out in a while and there's just so much complexity now. Incrediblly detailed biology down to cataracts and mental disorders, prosthetic limbs from cheap wooden replacements to bionic eyes and legs, organ transplants, temperature maps and changing seasons with approximate weather that changes daily, more biomes, more wildlife, cool random things like finding ancient cryosleep tubes that you can open

Here's the latest vide showing off Alpha 8

I just played a little bit of Risk of Rain, and this game is awesome. This game on Vita would be great. But on PC its quite the experience. Tons of enemies, and different perks, nice pixel art style. I would recommend.

It's coming to Vita ;)

AWESOME!

My buddy Andrew is behind this game. It seriously looks awesome, and its going back to the unforgiving, hard type of gameplay, and now that its been ported to Unity, there are some other effects, animations, ambiance, and the ability to make this game reach different consoles and what not. Its gonna be great.
