Destiny Nearing 13 Million Players, 500+ People Working on the Game Right Now

All of you that are mad seem to be reading this incorrectly...

It says have played, not STILL PLAYING. In my gaming group only one of the six of us still plays.

No doubt in my mind the player base for this game has tanked hard.

They packaged up a basic version of the game they wanted to make so that they would have a game to release this year.

Those 500 people are continuing to work on the real destiny for 2016.

You better hope they don't shut down the destiny 2 servers when they released destiny 3 with your gran turismo analogy

That's an average of almost 68 hours per player. And 13 million users (I assume they are counting the beta, people who rented it and second hand players because if not they would mention units sold) it's a really awesome number for a new IP.

Astonishing number that proves that the GAF and press hyperbole bashing a game (I assume in a big part of them just because are angry xbox fans that miss having Bungie exclusive and sheeps following them) doesn't represent the opinion of the market at all, and it's a tiny portion of it.

I'll go back to the game soon after a few weeks, really enjoyed it.

Just to be clear, none of those 500 people are writers, correct?

Well played.

The moment I stopped trying to tell myself it was a good game and that the time investment was = the enjoyment, I immediately felt better. (Though I was and still am a bit depressed at what a huge let down it all was.)

A lot of people got burnt by this game and that is fine to have your opinion on the game. I'm curious how many stop in to throw hate who never played the game. Destiny has a Nick Cage/ Nickelback thing going on currently.

side note - For all the destiny haters. If you have a PS4 copy to sell me for my cousin let me know.

Seeing it is a piece of crap game that no one enjoys, I will only offer you $20.

The DLC pretty much soured me on the game. They took away one treadmill and added several new ones. Really the only point of PvE is to gamble. Yeah, the shooting feels good but there's only so many times you can shoot through the same six strikes before it gets dull. I'm done doing raids. I'm done doing strikes. I don't care about the rewards. They're just weapons/armor with higher numbers attached. They just allow you to do higher level raids. And the only point of doing raids is to get a better chance at said weapons/armor. It's a pointless loop. I'm satisfied with my current character and gear. I don't feel like grinding for new gear and then grinding to level them up.

I'm not deleting the game or anything. I still play Crucible every now and then. That part of the game is actually pretty fun. But it too is lacking in content. Needs more modes and more maps.

Some of you guys need to realize its both possible to like Destiny overall and still have MAJOR problems with it.

Its my 2nd favorite game this year and I played the hell out of it up until the piece of shit "expansion" The Dark Below is.

Destiny has the best shooting mechanics / gameplay Ive played in a long time but the sheer lack of content, Bungie flat out lying on multitudes of times, and overall level up / loot mechanics are worth the criticism the game is receiving.

My only hope is Bungie takes this stuff to heart and delivers a great sequel.

I am in the same boat. Its a game I thoroughly enjoy my time with, but I also have major issues with it. Some people dont understand that, and others also cant objectively look at the game and say "yeah, there are flaws here." Honestly, one of my biggest points of contention is that up until launch Bungie billed the game as something it was not (and apparently that is on the back of the box, I cant verify as I dont have a physical copy) and, worse, they did the same for the "expansion." Not only did Bungie's president bill it as something where they listened to feedback and its more substantive (he even danced around the mission count), but same with Deej the weekend before its launch. Its a game that does not know what it wants to be, but knows what it wants to hint at in order to ensure it gets a userbase. As much as people ignore the story in Diablo as its a loot game, I feel that Diablo 3 and Reaper of Souls both have much more fleshed out stories than Destiny and The Dark Below. I cant tell you how infuriating it was when the stranger asked if I knew of the Black Garden and Dinklebot answered that we knew of it. Funny, because as a player, at that point in time, I had no effin clue what it was and no one explained until the Black Garden mission, the final mission in the game.

On the internet? Don't you know something is either the greatest thing ever, or a steaming pile of shit with no redeeming value what so ever.

There's a difference between talking about the flaws of the game and saying people who play it are like battered wives or crack addicts.

I played Destiny alot and got plenty of enjoyment from it. The reason I enjoyed it was because of the community and playing with my friends in coop against the computer. However the lack of content and grinding soured me after a while. When I got to 30 before the DLC released I felt like I finished the game and then promptly sold it. I wasn't happy with the extra grinding they were gonna add to draw out more length with their limited content.

I feel like the base game should have had significantly more levels and more raids. When the best part of the game is coop raid, how can they get away with just offering one. Most MMO's have multiple raids. Now after gamers have spent $80 on the game all they have to show for it is a small amount of story content and 2 raids. When I realized how much more repitition was still in store for me even after paying for DLC I decided to opt out and seeing as how they locked base game owners from much of the content post DLC release it was an easy decision to sell the game.

However I am not mad. This frees me up for Shadows of Morrador, Guilty Gear Xrd and some backlog games. Hopefully they will offer more for Destiny 2.

Same here. I only know one person that still plays. Guy plays it like 8-10 hours per day.

I quit the game to play DA:I after "expansion" 1 was a total joke but the vast majority of my friends list still plays it. The guys really don't seem to mind the grind, one of my good friends was really excited about a new glimmer farming spot he found that netted him 20k in an hour and another one is replaying one of the Blade of Crota missions over and over to get that Husk of the Pit drop. Doesn't make sense to me but there's a good chunk of players out there that truly don't mind the grind I guess.

I personally only really had fun with the game on the Raids and in the PvP, and that just wasn't enough to keep me away from DA:I.

What the hell's with all these gambling comparisons?

I play Destiny because I like doing the weekly strikes with their many modifiers. It actually does make the game really fun and challenging for co-op.

And being on PS3, it's actually a really social game because none of my friends still play on last-gen, so I had to rely on randoms for everything. This even includes the raids, so I ended up meeting a ton of new people in the tower just to do those

For me, the fun comes from doing the missions/strikes again with modifiers and playing with other people, rather than loot.

Even with the PvP, I play for fun. I might get bummed out by not getting loot but I that's not why I loaded up PvP in the first place

Almost 13 million people--12,869,066 to be exact--have played Bungie's shooter Destiny, the developer has revealed.

Have played?

So what is the active player count? Number is pretty misleading to be honest. The game sold a lot, true, but millions can rent the damn thing, play it and its considered a number in this total. Not to mention the incredible number of pre owned copies just at GameStops around the world alone.

I would love to see active numbers.

Check the OT. The majority of posts are people looking for others to raid with.

You simply have to ask in the matchmaking thread on this very forum.

Try harder? I could find a raid at almost any time of the day for a normal run on destinylfg when I played, and the OT was always an option too. Hard was a pain though.

Yeah you guys are right but In-game is horrible to try to arrange a raid or looking for a group, you are alone.

I am not sure how Bungie allowed such flawed design in their game.

Tbh, if I have to use a 3rd party tool or a GAF thread just to get a raid group, then Bungie botched it in my eyes.

They shouldn't force players to go outside the game just to find a group to able to play a raid or a nightfall/heroic strike.

I'd love it if they made an LFG system for Destiny.

Well to be honest, I've only ever done the raids with randoms because I'm on PS3 and almost everyone in gaf plays on PS4/Xbone.

It just requires you to ask high level people I'm the tower. If there isn't enough at one time, simply get as much as you can from one tower visit, go to orbit, then go back to the tower to be in another "lobby" with different people. Then repeat by asking more high level players

The number isn't misleading when they are openly acknowledging that there are different ways to try out the game that is not outright purchasing it. The number itself is an achievement whether it's one people here care for or not.

Ridiculous that 500 people can't come up with more and better content for this game.

I can have fun with the game since the shooting is great but the content and what there is to do is really lacking.

Just mind boggling.

Don't get me wrong I have some fun playing the base Destiny content (not paying for the TDB DLC at this time til somethings are improved).

But 500 people? How many people did it take to ship Dragon's Age: Inquisition? Because DA: I seems to have tons and tons more content, much better story, etc. I should checkout Destiny's credits because I am curious what the heck were these 500 men/women were doing...

Anyway, this game can be a lot of fun for 'achievers' that like to constantly have something to work towards. Problem is the next DLC will probably wipe all that away. So I am going to save my money and see if the next dlc will bring more meaningful content. Til then, I am fine with the base game for a few hours of fun a week

I think this next expansion (House of Wolves) is going to blow everyone away. It's the first post-launch expansion where they'll have had enough time to address all the complaints and make something awesome.

I hope at least a few of those 500 people realize they need to make their game more compelling to play.

I played through the campaign of destiny (it would be an utter lie to call it the story mode) and upon beating the game I was done with the game. 1 class , only made it to level 20 and there was just nothing left for me.

If 13 million players are really hooked into the worlds worst skinner box , I guess my thoughts on the game really don't matter much but if bungie does want a player like myself to come back to their game in the future they are going to have to make the second game at least twice as long and every single story mission will have to feel different from the previous one. As well, the bosses take about 4 times longer to kill than they should. Add in a gimmick that allows the fire team to work together to destroy the boss in a few shots instead of just shooting it for 15 minutes(I'm mostly ranting about the one strike on mars).

I've heard the raids actually do remedy this problem a bit but it takes too long to grind up the required equipment needed to even play the first raid, let alone the DLC one. Not to mention the forced 6 person strike team that has to be on your friends list.

I had some fun playing through destiny, the gunplay was good enough to overlook most of the short comings but I was half hoping the entire time "this is cool but I want more story , hopefully there's more story by the end" and in fact the longer it goes on the less of a story there is. How am I supposed to get immersed in a world or give a shit about what I'm doing when the game is basically telling me "none of what you do matters, you are just wasting time grinding for loot in a stupid videogame to kill stronger enemies to get better loot to kill stronger enemies , etc etc etc". I have no reason to play a game that doesn't have a plot. Especially when there's enough lore behind the scenes that destiny SHOULD have a good story, it just chose not to for some reason.

This isn't 1979 anymore, I need more motivation than "space invaders are invading, shoot them". Yet here we are in 2014 and that's pretty much all there is to this game. It's definitely my biggest let down in gaming this past year. I didn't hate it but the more I think about it the less I actually think I liked it. It's maybe a 6/10 experience at best.

I'm convinced that the people who keep playing it aren't enjoying it at all, it's just a well designed skinner box for them.

I don't know.

People said the same of this one and it was what it was.

I don't doubt it will be better but that doesn't excuse the original product and the first 20 dollar expansion.

God I hope so. More variation in the mission design would be fantastic.

For a vast number of people, the game is already plenty compelling. I, and several of my friends, have played Destiny regularly since launch. I've put in over 200 hours and I can assure you I'm enjoying it. Completing the raids and the Nightfalls has been some of my most rewarding moments in a game...well, ever. People will misinterpret what I'm saying here, but *personally,* the raids and nightfalls give me that same feeling of reward/accomplishment I felt when taking down bosses in DeS/DS for the first time.

Folks who stopped at LVL 20 never got to experience anything like the raid, nor did they come to fully appreciate the different elemental types of weapons and their strengths/weaknesses in different missions with modifiers which truly change the way you have to play.

Honestly, I think one of Bungie's biggest mistakes was not including more "raid-type" missions in the main game. Smaller versions that would have given people a taste of what the raid is actually like, because it absolutely changes everything.

As for story, there's a ton of backstory and interesting lore, but I don't think this will ever be something like Mass Effect. Frankly, I'm not sure if that was ever the intent. I'm ok without it, but I get why people want more.

I fully understand and admit that the game isn't for everyone and completely get why folks don't like it. It's just unfortunate that so many on the other side of the fence (not referring to you directly) can't understand/comprehend that many gamers actually do find it fun/compelling/interesting/etc.

Thank you.

Seriously, it's not for everyone, but there are still a vast number of people out there (myself included) who actually find the game fun and deep with plenty of content.

What content? There is just the raid and Crucible. Beyond that you are just redoing those awful missions full of Bullet sponge Bosses. This is coming from someone that has done the endgame raid plenty (VoG on normal & a bit of HM).

I will still continue to play the base content a little bit (like 2-3 hrs a week) but I keep it real. This game has no content at all really.
