This post should answer your question, especially HaRyu's second quoted post. It should also be in the OP.

Thanks, so it's not permanently down, just periods of authentication issues due to a large amount of traffic? is a DDOS just a steady stream of millions of requests?, or is it something that comes in waves?

Still can't get access to the UK PSN store (PS4).

So can anyone tell me the price for:

Steamworld Dig

Terraria

Binding of Issac

My son dearly wants them but unable to check the price since Wednesday.

Thanks guys.

My younger cousin has been promised an XB1 and came out with 0 gifts at all last christmas and his last b-day. He's finally getting an XB1 tomorrow! Exciting. Finally he'll have people to play Destiny. Poor child just plays crucible all day by himself on 360.

That being said, anyone else try setting up their XB1 today? Was it impossible due to the day one update? His current internet is terrible so it'll take a while. Have things gotten any better? He'll be getting his tomorrow morning :)

This is a good reason why developers and manufacturers should think twice about putting so much emphasis on online functionality in games and get back to making rich single player offline games and bringing back split screen multiplayer

I got my little brothers console to work after 5 hours of trying to get the day one update to work. He still can't import his gamer tag info yet. He went to bed so I stopped trying. By the sound of things on GAF it should be better tomorrow!

Just how easy it is to attempt a DDOS attack?
Is it possible to shut down XBL/PSN servers all year long if there are dozens or hundreds of groups like Lizard Squad exist?

No, because I actually understand how a ddos works. It's the equivalent of being annoyed at the architects of your two car garage for not being able to suddenly accommodate 1,000 cars one afternoon because an asshole at work cc'd an email to everyone about your party just to be a dick...

It's not a matter of just "spinning up" millions of more blades to handle dummy logins.

Great post. Lol.

XBL worked for me fully late last night, 9:34am now won't get a chance to check if it's ok for a while. Hope it is.

man these lizard douches sure did a number on PSN/XBL. it's hilarious how they claim to do it to expose security flaws when it's a fucking DDoS.

ah well, back to binding of isaac.

My son is 9, lives with his mum, and got a PS4 for Xmas.

Since I didn't have access to see him yesterday, all we wanted to do was play online together and have some fun.

Thanks to the LS for ruining that opportunity.

Poor BBC reporters, no original Xbox online fun for them

I'm starting to find this whole thing comical and almost (ALMOST, not quite) siding with Lizardtards just for the sake of getting people to unplug from their gaming for a day.

Is there really nothing else people can occupy their time with? I play videogames 30 hours a week most weeks because I'm on graveyard shift and stay awake all night on my nights off, but even with that inordinate amount of gaming I'm quite confident I could read a book, stay an hour longer at the gym, rustle up some awesome apple cider vinegar chili, go blading downtown (yeah I'm weird and skate in the middle of the night downtown), watch some netflix, or maybe even play my games offline.

And that's just stuff I can do from midnight to 8am when the rest of the city is mostly asleep. Think of all the stuff I could do during the day?

I could see some kid getting an XB1 or PS4 for christmas and being upset, but at least PS4 lets you play games offline out of the box does it not? Does XB1 still suffer the mandatory day one update to play offline or is that being included in the system OS now?

Just saying, all this hulllabaloo about online gaming being down for a day or two is very out of hand. Come on folks, there's a whole wide world out there!

For some people, this is their only time off. Or they don't have family. Or they need a break from family. Or, hell, and this one will blow your mind, some people live in different time zones and are actually done with Christmas.

They can play offline, but some games need patches, or just the capability to play online might make games like Destiny work.

You are right. This world is vast, and there's no need to apply a one-size-fits-all mentality to others.

No online, that's fine. I ran through Another World (20th Anniversary) to take out another game from the backlog.

Amazing game that still holds up for me.

I'm not applying a one-size fits all mentality to anyone. I'm saying that there's a million things to do in the world and online gaming is only one of them. Only a select few console games are online-only like Destiny, so if people REALLY must game, they can play one of the others offline.

Also, I never mentioned Christmas, so I don't know how Christmas being 'done' is supposed to blow my mind.

It's just silly that so many people are getting so worked up over this triviality of not being able to play online. It's a bit absurd.

#firstworldproblems I guess

And to think, we can look forward to this how much more when come next gen pushing the idea of the cloud and do a Xbone happens all over.

Yes because that's the solution Neville Chamberlain.

Giving in to assholes is always the way to fix a problem.

You just know when these people are caught they'll turn out to be basement dwelling losers who'll invoke the asperger's defence.

Anyway despite their bullshit attack I was able to update the fw on my new PS4 and eventually get through activating PSN. Can't grab any of the games I've been stashing on PSN+ for a while but otherwise it's working.

It is, but you can apply that to anything, and consumers have every right to not be happy with their product not working due to some asshole kids.

Look, what I'm saying is, people have the right to chose what they want with their time. Saying #firstworldproblems is a huge copout. Now, threatening the "hackers" and getting so angry you can't see straight is silly, but being annoying is acceptable, and it seems like that's what's going on at the most with people in general.

If people want to play a game, let them play. No need to lord over and say "well, you have books" when their particular interest at this time is geared towards something that should be working.

How on earth is what I said 'giving in'?

There isn't away for you, or I, or any of the many gamers out there that are actually upset about this to 'stop' DDoS attacks (at least not currently, hopefully in the future that will change).

By getting upset about it, you're giving them exactly what they want.

By NOT getting upset about it and doing something else, paying it no mind, you're actually doing quite the opposite of 'giving in'. You're not letting them get you upset, and in that sense you win.

Your interpretation of my post baffles me.

No need to lord over and say "well, you have books"

Please tell me you don't think I actually meant for everyone to go out and read a book. I was speaking generally, as in for me personally books are one avenue. For others it may be TV, or biking, or cooking, or having sex, hell if I know; but I'd think most people have SOMETHING in their life other than games to occupy their time. That's all I was saying.

Getting upset, or even annoyed at it beyond a passing 'oh, huh, yeah I guess that's a bit annoying' is giving them exactly what they want. Doing something else and not batting an eye at their juvenile attack is the only true victory to be had when a DDoS like this takes down a service you would otherwise be using.

Forgive me for posting so much about this here right now as it's quite obviously not a huge deal to me. I'm at work with nothing better to do atm. But when I was home yesterday while it was down it was still a rather yawn-inducing moment. I just wasn't on GAF at the time b/c I typically only do my GAF perusing when my patients are asleep at night. Too much else to do when at home. I'm not trying to be pompous though so please don't take this that way. I just wanted to make it clear that I'm not here trying to ruffle feathers of those that ARE upset. Just trying to bring the other side of the 'fuck those guys!!?@!?!' coin into the conversation.

Won't Kim & MEGA know where the vouchers were redeemed & they will also know where the 'stuff' Lizard Squad upload to their MEGA accounts is uploaded from, thus able to find them & expose them?

What the hell it's still down!?

Christ how much longer is this going to go on for? Hopefully it's not that infamous PSN hack a few years ago.

No, because lizard squad wouldnt be using the mega accounts themselves - they would be selling them.

It's presumptuous to assume that everyone (or even a majority) wanting to play video games on a day on which almost everything is closed and almost everyone has the day off spend all of their leisure time otherwise playing video games. Could it not be the case that people spend ample time reading, working out, etc... and simply wanted this particular time to play some video games?

And yes, there is a whole wide world out there. And video games are part of it.

I just got Dragon Age (which I can't play without an internet connection or w/o PSN being up, thanks EA) so I'm hoping this isn't going to be as severe as the 2011 incident.

On the bright side, I caught up on some shows today.

Yup, they are a part of it, but they're not the whole world, so being outraged (perhaps too strong a word, but even bent out of shape, upset, whatever) about the 'online' portion of these games being shut off does still seem absurd to me. It's not like video games themselves have ceased to exist.

Of course people might do plenty of other stuff. And of course people might want this particular time to play some video games. The crazy thing is, they can. They just can't play the ONLINE component of the games (other than the few online-only console games, but those are a very small portion of the total list).

I also think you're reading too much into what I said, or are trying to put words in my mouth. I didn't say I think the people upset spend all their time playing games.

All I am saying is that whether you play video games an hour a month or 100 hours a week, you can't very well go slay the dragon and stop the DDoS attack single-handedly. So rather than huffing and puffing about it (and thus giving these guys exactly what they want), why not just go on about doing something else you enjoy, or play what games you can offline if that's what you want to do?

We can't always have everything we want in life. If the service is down (or at least under severe strain, since some seem to have been getting through), them's the breaks. Time to do something else.

I'm sure you can just set ur internet to off and play dragon age. Psn down for me (can't even sync trophies) and I've been playing that and driveclub

My biggest problem with this if DDoS is happened like now to Sony that there lack of updates are horrible slow but even worse PSN will be longer offline last time they did this it was nearly 3/4 days before it came back up it is pathetic and when i look at microsoft they keep you updated by the hour when it works it works.

But i do find it more even more pathetic from those assholes kiddies from virgin squad ruining everything instead focus on let's say ISIS or other regimes but no it is fun to fuck around people who just want to play games.
