Unfortunately, DDoS works because the internet works. It uses the very method by which the internet functions, at a foundational level, against itself. There is no "fix" or patch. There is only taking the entire internet as we know it, scrapping it, and starting over with a new protocol not designed in the late 70s.
And I find it unlikely that will happen anytime soon for obvious reasons.
There is no defense against a large-scale DDoS. None.

It's kinda hard to find a way to prevent people from asking for access to you service on a massive scale. It's not an issue with Sony, it's a fundamental flaw with how the internet works. Traffic == congestion in any type of situation, the intertubes are no different.
The easiest way to prevent it is to simply have more bandwith to accept requests, and that costs lots of $$$$

Yes, but no. It comes to us from Latin, but in many languages it's the main word for free. It being originally a Latin word doesn't exclude it from being a word in other languages too.

Aside from technical support messages acknowledging a problem, It seems that none of Lizard Squad's targets have acknowledged their existence. Perhaps they are acting on advice to not say a word until after they are apprehended.
