Giant Bomb GOTY 2014 - Destiny Has Brought Us Here

OR they don't think a better looking car game is anything to hoot and holler about.

Even tho that weather system is quite awesome.
They're racist against racing games.
Jeff's weird. Some "textures don't look all that great" in every game ever. Except The Vanishing of Ethan Carter, which should've won. Playing that game almost makes you want to run screaming (joyfully) into the woods and just shove your face in the moss to appreciate how pretty nature is.

I can respect Guilty Gear though. That game's undeniably visually excellent. Would've opposed Neverending Nightmares purely because it makes me uncomfortable and I don't like it, even though that is the entire point...I still don't like it.

Giantbomb has one of the most transparent Game of the Year Deliberations in all of the industry, in that they record the debate for EVERYONE to listen to.

Yet people get upset because a game is left off.

You can't make everyone happy can you?

And where is this support for Driveclub fucking coming from, from everything I read I though people generally didn't like the game?

Maybe I have been disconnected for too long, but WTF?

I see the opposite. From my experience, people tend to think it's the best pure racing game in a long time. Most of the complaints were (rightfully) about the broken online portion of the game.

Don't really like how Guilty Gear looks tbh. It's cool they were able to mimic sprites with polygonal models but when the weird camera stuff happens it just breaks it in a bad way.

..

Mr. Game & Watch is polygonal too best graphic 2001

Maybe it was mostly anger for the broken online part of the game. To be honest, I have been disconnected heavily recently, and might of just been hearing the general grumbles about the social aspects being broken at launch.

Ah, well then.. the support is understandable.

You must not have read any of the DC threads on GAF because tons of people love it, especially after the weather patch.

I've still only played it for five minutes at a Gamestop because of the totally inexcusable delay of the PS+ version. But between that and online videos I saw enough to make me think it was one of the best dozen looking games of 2014. I didn't play GoW3 at all but was still baffled when it didn't get brought up four years ago.

You DO realize that Jeff's favorite game of last generation is a racing game, right?

I... what... he's talked many times about playing and loving TIE Fighter when it came out 20 years ago.

Not trying to derail discussion here or anything, but people make so many wrong assumptions about what we have and haven't played in the course of these threads that I'm surprised people still try to hang their hats on them as talking points.

People can be dumb. In other news if Valiant hearts is spoiled in the next GOTY podcast i am gonna have to skip it, that is the one game this year i don't want spoiled for some reason. I should get it.

The ending gets blown wide open, yeah, so be wary. I think in best story?

Surprisingly, I've been consistently agreeing with Brad's arguments on day one.

DOTA 2 has continued to have a huge impact on the gaming world in its second year of release. Look at how big The International has become. But the others seemed eager to dismiss it not because it's a bad choice for old game of 2014, but because "LOL DOTA BRAD DOTA HERP DERP" which is a pretty shitty reason.

"BRAD DESTINY DERP DERP" seemed to be the reason they were initially dismissive of Destiny in the best looking category, too. Until Jeff spoke up, that is. Which is kind of bullshit. I get as tired of Brad's filibustering as anyone else, but if they're not even going to give him a minimum amount of respect for his opinions then their GOTY deliberation process is broken.

Also, Jeff's dismissiveness of GTA5 as just a remaster was super lame. If you played the 360/PS3 version and then switch to the Bone/PS4 version, the differences are staggering. The amount of reworking done to make that game look so good, particularly in first person (signage, people, all sorts of street and building textures, game mechanics in general) go far beyond "HD remake." Rockstar made that game function in an entirely different way than it initially did, and it had to have taken a huge amount of work vs. just doing an upres and calling it a day.

That said, IMO, they made good choices. Seeing Guilty Gear get that kind of recognition is awesome. I can't imagine how much work went into the character models and animations. Pure artistry.

Ooh nifty, five hours. Did you see many of the tracks in their unique time of day/weather conditions? Did you play post-IQ/weather patch?

I played a couple days ago, in fact. Not sure why how long I played matters? I'm not saying it's not a great looking game. I am saying it's not the ordained, best looking game, bar none, of the year.

WTF is going on in this thread today?

Okay... here's a transcript from the last bombcast, slightly paraphrased except for the bolded.

- Yo Tie Fighter got re-released
- Tie Fighter is one of the best games ever made
Jeff: That said, none of us have played it

(Timestamp: 31:22)

They were talking about the re-release dude. Not the original. They've played the game, they've mentioned it many times over the years.

Yeah most people like the game for what it is, and there is no denying the weather effects look goddamn amazing. I will agree with the sentiment that the weather doesn't make Driveclub a better game, but I think what's there is already solid now that it has been fixed. I think Jeff's criticism about the driving being bad is just flat out wrong. He might not like it but it is by no means bad.

They're obviously talking about the re-released version. Brad has said many times that Tie Fighter is one of his all time favourite games, and it's up there for Jeff too. I would imagine that Dan is the only one who hasn't played it due to not owning a gaming PC growing up.

I finished Valiant Hearts last night just because you guys said you would spoil it, thanks for helping me clear up my back log, and do you remember any other games that you know you guys will be spoiling?

Giant Bomb's awards teach a very valuable lesson which is that all end-of-the-year rankings for games or music or movies or whatever are almost entirely arbitary and decided by a mixture of attrition, stubbornness, and selective ignorance. Taking any of them seriously is a fool's errand. Their value is in the exhaustive analysis and discussion that you have while making the decisions, which is ironic because GB is the only games website that actually makes that part publicly available.

The conversation around that was whether or not they played many of the games on the list within the past year, even if they liked them a lot. It's why they said no to Windjammers.

I still find it strange that no site has copied GB's GOTY podcasts. It has to be one of the most popular things they do. I get that it's not practical for a big site like Gamespot (Danny mentioned that 25 people decided their awards), but for a smaller site like Gametrailers? Seems like a no-brainer to me since they have these discussions anyway, so why not tape them?

Did Jeff once offer you a warm can of Country Time lemonade?

I think Mordor is the only game story I'm worried about being spoiled.

Last year was a nightmare because I skipped TLoU on PS3 while waiting for a PS4 version, but I managed to avoid any spoilers.

There was a pretty long skit during the podcast about how they were only concerned about games that had personal impacts for them over the year and, to paraphrase, "who gives a fuck if someone else liked a game." They dismissed DOTA after pointing out that Brad was probably more impacted by Destiny this year rather than DOTA. Seemed like a pretty clean dismissal.

Even people who love that game don't care much about the story. So I would say that that's not a game you should be scared of getting spoiled, really.

Story in mordor is not really that good to get spoiled and it wont probably wont get spoiled as it wont be on the story list Probably.

I'm sure the internet would explode if sites like Gametrailers or IGN did GotYs like GB, because they essentially happen the same way.

Driveclub has a crazy cult following here on GAF, so the reactions were expected. I'm surprised more people haven't mentioned the Donkey Kong talk, honestly.

Before or after the weather patch? Because seriously, I think you guys made the right call with Guilty Gear but that weather in DC is ridiculous.

"Dude, you have not played more than like an hour of that thing!"

This was Brad's response to Jeff's negative opinion on how GTA V looks on Xbone/PS4 at 1:52:50.

The ending gets blown wide open, yeah, so be wary. I think in best story?

Thanks Rudds! Yeah i'll probably just skip the GOTY podcast for best story and i'll try to just buy Valiant Hearts for PS4 whenever the PSN webstore returns which should be any minute now yeah....

Gonna hit the gym while listening ot hte GOTY podcast.

I'll report back after I've fallen off the treadmill and dropped a barbell on my leg.

Here's the ending to Mordor: you fight an evil sauron type dude and you can guess the result.

No one likes Mordor for the story it tells, people like it for the stories that the game allows to be told through its open world randomness.

"I mean, the last time I heard from Vinny he sent me a text message that said he was taking some personal time. But I just figured that meant he was having another kid, he does that a lot."
