Went over to Kotaku to see if maybe I need to give it another chance:

"Pre-Order: 55% off the Limited Edition Code Black Drone W/ HD Camera"
"9 Video Games That Left Us Defenseless and Scared"
"I Finished These 26 Video Games in 2014"
"Get 15% Off 3 Months Plan Of Loot Crate's Geek & Gamer Box"
"Pass Go and Collect 200 Rupees, 33% off Shovel Knight, and More Deals"
"Neill Blomkamp's Secret Alien Movie Looks So Good We're Furious"
"Giving Money as a Gift, Turned into an Art Form"
"The MacGyver intro without music is hilariously ridiculous"
"Hot Toys' Darth Vader Is Impressive, Most Impressive"
"Year-End Cosplay in Japan: The Cute, the Sexy, the Weird"

Best of luck to you, Patrick.

Really curious what kotaku can offer Klepek that GB couldn't.

Looking forward to his articles nevertheless.

Can kotaku finally bring back it's podcast? Really enjoyed that back in the day.

They can bring him a place where he can write about news?

He's was a news writter working for the videogame website with the less news in the whole industry. GB never cared about news. He was a journalist doing spelunky and horror game streams... Kotaku is centered around written news so it totally makes sense for him to go there.

Also, Kotaku is much bigger than GB.

bish gets all the credit :)
Makes sense. Nobody goes to GB for written content. Kotaku is primarily written content.

Oddly, Kotaku is probably the one site with a worse design than GB.

The "seems like a downgrade" talk is ignoring that in terms of actually writing and reporting news (which is what Patrick does), Kotaku is a much bigger name and has a much wider reach than Giant Bomb, even Kotaku has Brian Ashcraft writing stupid shit about Japan.

GB at this point basically only does video content. That makes it really hard for someone who wants to do written content like Patrick does. At kotaku, he can do the type of work he's comfortable with. That's probably why he left.
Yeah, I wouldn't be surprised if there's a way larger audience at Kotaku as well, especially for reading articles.

Patrick was a good addition to GB, but I have to admit that I can probably count on one hand (and have fingers to spare) the number of his articles I actually took the time to read. It's just not what I go to GB for.

Really conflicted about this... I mean, it's great for Kotaku and for Patrick. Patrick and Jason Schreier (spellinz?) are both brilliant and those two alone make Kotaku worth a visit. However, it's a pretty heavy loss for Giant Bomb for a number of reasons and that stings me just a little. Kleptok plz.

I think that's a wonderful fit. A little less personality-driven but a staff of recognizable names. A little more focus on the social and political side of things without being academic. A little more about forming a narrative than making the big scoop.

Okay, now I think that Patrick was actually let go (from higher ups from CBSi, not Jeff) instead of quitting on his own accord.

Because really, Kotaku? Kotaku?!

Lol he didn't get let go. Like others have said, Kotaku is a better fit for him than GB.

Not gonna lie I was hoping for more like USGamer. That site is getting better and better and he would have been a great add there.

It's a site that focuses a lot more on written content and has a way bigger readership that Giant Bomb. Makes sense to me.

Klepek was one of the few guys at Giant Bomb that gave the impression that they still enjoy games.

Big loss for Giant Bomb and between Schrier and Klepek...I might have to read Kotaku more often...

...weird.

He's definitely a much better fit at Kotaku than Giant Bomb, just in the more varied tastes in gaming.

That is very true, at least he'll have a chance now of getting games like Binding of Isaac into a sites' top ten for the year. That was brutal this year, just no respect for him at all. He'll enjoy the change!

I...suppose. Was anyone at Giant Bomb really stopping him from writing any articles that he wanted though? I guess we'll never know.

My guess is not that anyone was stopping him, but very few people were reading his articles on GB. Not because the articles were bad, but it's such a video-centric site. That and the podcast.

Still, in my mind once you're on Giant Bomb, you've kind of peaked as a games media person so this seems like a backward move IMO. Then again, Kotaku gets quite a bit more traffic than GB so maybe he's got an opportunity to make more money there. I mean, realistically at GB he was kind of the head of the B-team, no offense to him intended. Not much upward mobility there I have to assume.

I might have to start listening to whatever podcast stuff Kotaku does if Patrick appears on it. Do Kotaku have any podcasts?

I don't. Klepek said that he's been technically off of GB for a few months and that he only announced it on the podcast Monday?

He seemed disappointed when they hired Dan/Jason by the retweets he made...

I haven't seen the retweets but that is a super weird (and unprofessional) thing to do.

It's January 2nd 2015 and you're wondering why there isn't actual game news?

Here's a hint: there's not much to report. Look at any other news outlet for hobbies and see similar fluff pieces.

Kotaku isn't just a bigger name with wider audience, it actually produces a lot of quality written content, while Giant Bomb does not.

I mean, they're all on the front page of Kotaku, so?

So, it's the day after New Year's. They sometimes cross-post io9 stuff that may be of interest to gamers, and they've probably had to do it a bit more because it's a holiday week.

Plus, several of those articles are good, and their Deals posts are actually very well put together by Shane.

Our GOTYs will go live in a few minutes. I think you'll be pleased with the results.
