Patrick Klepek is joining Kotaku

Yeah, I don't think he would've necessarily left had he not moved to Chicago. 'Stopped caring' was a poor choice of words, I don't think he doesn't enjoy creating video content at all or anything but his current situation simply isn't optimal and doesn't allow him to contribute to Giant Bomb in satisfactory fashion (not only to his fans, but in a way that he himself enjoys too).

Ok.

And while i still liked some the video content and articles he churned out i also agree that it might not have been optimal and the stuff he would like to contribute (articles) might not have gotten the reach he wanted.

note: just speculation. :p.

Every time I visit Kotaku im amazed it exists, there might be great content but it looks so bad I dont feel like digging for it. Even the top stories of the year is laid out so badly, text size is all wrong, too much wasted white space, clickbait headlines. I like the people when I see them on other site's videos, but Kotaku itself is borderline unreadable.

It's funny actually. He's excellent at talking about games on the bombcast, but his writing always comes off as self-absorbed.

He clearly is self-absorbed. It's actually my only problem with him. I think he's usually a good writer, is intelligent, and seems like a genuinely nice guy and a good dude. Some genuine humility would be welcome though, but he's still pretty young (and he has gotten better in that regard).

That said, I think Kotaku is a good fit for him and I look forward to seeing what he does there. I feel like GB has been going straight to hell lately (Dan Ryckert has ruined the site for me), so I'm glad he was able to move on to something else.

Sad now I will never read anything new by him again :/ but I wish him the best.

Kotaku on the other hand..Was a big fan for some time of kotaku in 2013 and beginning of 2014 but after some article..gosh I hate kotaku and just want it to go down forever.

Why?

Some of the articles on Kotaku is genuinely good. I just learned to *NOT* click on those nonsensical click bait-y articles written by certain editors on that site.

Good Kotaku articles tend to get a mention here. I imagine we'll still see a lot of his work despite not visiting Kotaku regularly.

Nice to see plan B hasn't completely dried up on him yet.

Dan alone made it the best year ever.

Common... I love Giantbomb and Dan is a fun dude, but lets be real here since the CBS adquisition the site its been downhill.

I haven't check Alexa numbers but I've been in the comunity boards since the begining, they used to be super active... these days thought, Whiskey Media glory days are long gone.

Huh interesting choice. Will be interesting to see what he brings to Kotaku. Can he elevate them away from the ridicule the majority of the internet direct at Kotaku?

I thought Schreier has already taken care of that. Kotaku is still full of silly stuff - that's just what Kotaku is -, but they're also writing a lot of legitimately awesome articles these days.

Yep.

Dude is a true character

He really is. I still think the analogy of Dan being America's Karl Pilkington is spot on, and I mean that in the best way possible. I've seen him a few times at bars in my neighborhood and he's got an energy about him that reminds me of those times I'd see Ryan Davis out drinking with friends. The guy loves life and wants people around him to be happy too. I'm cool with that.

I really hope this was a great insider dig in reference to the Destiny talk in the GOTY podcasts.

lol oh man... I'm listening to the tail end of Day 5 right now -______________-

Did you follow GiantBomb this year? Weakest year ever.

Metal Gear Scanlan has been some of the best content they have ever made. But If you dont have a premium membership the site is pretty much a ghost town for video content these days. Has been that way for a few years now.

Yep. Site felt really unique before CBS but now all it seems like they do is Quick Looks and occasional premium videos.

I kinda wished they had a site that has all that good stuff in one place and another site for all the other random crap they post. Kotaku is on the same level as Polygon. People just don't take them as serious additions to the gaming journalism community. Their own fault really.

They changed the site several times and had the forums almost hidden away at some point. I stopped posting there, too because of it. I don't know if activity there is a good way to measure the sites success.

Patrick comes across as a bright and over sure of his opinion. Contrasted to drew who defers to other expertise by adds his own opinion as an opinion. It's what generates a lot of the hate Patrick gets but it's just how a lot of people are. Jim Sterling and Jeff Gerstmann have that streak as well but since their older and curmudgeon-y it seems more acceptable. They are also funnier about it.

Dan's hilarious if you think of him as an Alien who just landed on earth and only knows about video games and wrestling. But I could see how his brand of insanity isn't for everyone.

To be fair with all the Kotaku cynicism, they have written some pretty good investigative articles as well as broke some pretty big news e.g. Assassin's Creed: Victory so while the website has its share of pointless click bait articles that can easily be avoided, there's still gems that are worth reading. Usually the said gems happen to get posted on GAF. I think Patrick is going to be a good fit for Kotaku since teaming up with Schreier will be a good thing in the producing more good quality/fascinating articles.

For a community oriented site I do think it matters, The new CBS web back end was such a step back from the original site, remember: quest, level up your avatar, achievements, the wikki actually worked, the site Dave build was somenthing else. These days Giantbomb feels like a glorified twitch chanel.

And let me be clear here, I like those guys a lot, that is why I keep my subscription.. I don't even think this is their fault. Market realities and stuff, the Whiskey Media start up was before the 2008 downturn, the 360 and the ps3 where really hot back then (remember videogames being bigger than hollywood?) and the mobile gaming market wasn't a gigantic yet. Things change and traditional video game sites are not what they used to be from a business perspective, so I would imagine budget is set accordingly.

so there, my crazy ass speculation

why'd the guy leave GB anyway?

also, i just think it's interesting how intimate people have gotten with video game writers. you'd never really hear any fuss about a writer from the Wall Street Journal moving over to the Washington Post or something. kind of skews your perception of their work.

Honestly, that's a really good fit. They probably have the strongest focus on breaking new stories and investigative stuff of any major game site, which is where his talents really are. It sucks he won't really be doing any group video and podcast stuff like at Giant Bomb, but as long as he feels it's necessary to live in Chicago, that's not really going to be an option for him at any site.

Ugh, I don't read Kotaku and I don't intend to start even with Klepeck :(
I bloody loved Scoops which makes this sad.

fwiw, they've significantly improved over the past few years

if you haven't been in a while, maybe give it another shot

(I don't read them regularly myself, so maybe the bread and butter articles are trash, but the stuff I'm regularly linked to is impressive and their move away from preview coverage is healthy and worth supporting)

That seems like a better fit for Patrick than Giant Bomb.

I don't go to Kotaku often, but I follow Patrick on Twitter so I'll see what's up there.

No one should doubt Kotaku has a passionate and talented staff. Jason and Stephen are particularly enjoyable to read, but most of them do stuff I often find interesting and worthwhile. NeoGAF has generally narrowed my game media diet dramatically, in the sense I usually feel no need to go anywhere else (aside from Giant Bomb, councidentally), but I do occasionally hit up Kotaku and scroll through recent stories. Stephen deserves a lot of credit for what he's done with the site.

So I'm really happy for Patrick. I can see Kotaku being a wonderful platform for the work he is most interested in. This should be a great fit.

Additionally, I'll no doubt be wanting to visit Kotaku more often now, and I'm actually looking forward to doing so. With Patrick there, the mix of personalities/talents is looking very appealing. Kotaku is a big site, and it's good to see it going in a positive direction.

If you look at Klepek's resume, it's kind of like a friend I have. Giant Bomb is actually the longest he's ever stayed in one place. Outside of that, most jobs were a year or less. I think he just gets to the point where he wants a change of scenery.

I've always been indifferent on him personally. He never really added much or took away much from anything on GB. The only thought I ever had was that where Ryan, Jeff, Brad, Vinny, and Alex seemed like lifelong friends, he seemed like that good friend that comes and goes. Maybe reading too much into it.

Alexa numbers have been climbing all year. Don't think Jeff was just bullshitting when he said 2014 was great for them.

Totilo writes in the New York Times, so their presence in the public is getting recognized elsewhere.

Gaming press isn't necessarily unprecedented, but it's a fixed conglomerate at the top. You have names that will be in the press forever. The national news has the same, but it's never locally.

The people with the names get the job. It's not shocking. Klepek has enough experience to go where he chooses to go. Kotaku has stepped things up and probably has fought their own battle to get where they're at. Good for Klepek! Good for him!

Geoff Keighly is probably the ring leader in terms of television host and annual events at the moment. That man is like the industry's celebrity. It's fascinating and it's wonderful to analyze/see all this. I remember Dan Rather on CBS. His voice, his seriousness outlook, and the moment the camera panned over to his face. Dan Rather was remembered by me because he reminded me that we are all connected in this world. When I look for a game journalist I look for the same thing. Can they somehow relate me back to my enjoyment of video games? Can he make me feel something more than the norm?

Definitely a good hire by Kotaku.

Patrick leaving GB didn't really come as a shock to me. He really was limited since he was out by himself in Chicago. It didn't work with GB's focus on personality driven video content. I doubt there's any drama behind him leaving.

Kotaku has improved itself so much in the last few years and it just keeps on improving. Quite an impressive about face.

Polygon could learn from Kotaku. (Which is funny, because Brian Crecente, the EIC of Polygon, was the EIC of Kotaku before Totilo)

yup. I still remember the interview with Totillo after he was hired on Gamers with Jobs podcast, very professional and straitforward. Guy is a good egg.

I'm confused, did Kotaku at some point stop being the videogame equivalent of The Sun? Because I actually mentally barred myself from going to that place because it was so terrible.

Or is it just putting together a tiny pool of decent writers to deflect attention away from all the idiot garbage that still gets posted as per Gawker policy?

why'd the guy leave GB anyway?

He moved back to Chicago (both him and his wife have family there) nearly a year after his dad passed away unexpectedly. Since he was living in Chicago with none of the GB people to work with it was pretty hard for him to produce solid video content, especially since every quicklook on the site tends to be at least two people. I guess with Kotaku it lets him focus on writing articles rather than having to worry about producing video content. Also, GB's biggest draw is their podcast which is something he couldn't be a part of either.

Yep. He talks all the time about things Giant Bomb can do now that weren't possible before. Some are convinced it has gone downhill, but I think this is more a negative response to change than a response to some objective deterioration. I've dabbled in Giant Bomb stuff since around 2010, but it wasn't until very recently that it completely gripped me. Obviously, to me, it feels like the site is going through glory days.
