We know there are lots of podfish in the intersea, but hopefully you saved some room for our extra-late, extra-fantastic fifth episode.

Show description:

Our usual cast of house cats are joined by Area 5.tv’s Ryan O’Donnell and Jay Frechette, along with freelancer Kat Bailey. We discuss the Dawn of War II Beta, RE5, and Afro Samurai, before getting into an epic debate about the nature of shooters (featuring Half-Life and Killzone 2). And, yes, we finally select the first Backlog 2.0 game, along with some listener letters.

edit, BTW I couldnt find a Rebel FM image online ANYWHERE. So I went to the trouble of screencapping the iTunes album art and uploading. Thank me later.

I'm interested to hear their opinions on RE5.

Hooray for backlog!

What's the quickest way to get new podcasts? I hate when it takes a few hours to a day or two to go up on itunes. Yes I'm a podcast whore!

Edit: After listening to all the new podcasts that have sprung up after the whole UGO thing, I think it was a good thing. You know apart from you guys loosing your paychecks :\

Hmmm

Maybe check your iTunes settings or get the latest version (although I doubt that would make a difference). But my iTunes podcasts turn up instantly. Certainly never "a day or two" or even a few hours. Its pretty much instant.

The shooter discussion was horrible. please think and structure some thoughts before trying to articulate them.

I havent heard this weeks 'heady discussion' yet, but last weeks was fine. What didnt you like about it?

Arthur and Nick's argument felt like it was sort of being thought up as Ryan was stomping the shit out of the inane bull they were spewing.

Is this person Cat/Kat guy or girl? I am half hour into the show and I still can't tell.

edit: I am looking his/her 1up page and I still can't tell. Erh!

It's a girl.

So I loved 1UP FM, and while I have enjoyed all the Rebel FM podcasts for the most part, I think Arthur needs to bow out. I didn't mind him as much in the first few episodes but I just don't like his personality or humor. It seems he's taken up a much larger role now and is way too prominent in discussions. To the point where I'm losing interest in the show.

Alone?

I am not going to finish listening to this show. This guy, he interrupted every single sentense from every fucking body. What the fuck. The only one I care is Nick anyway. I am not listing to this shit. I am going to replay giant bomb or whatever.

Anthony, in the RE5 demo, you can invite people to your games. On the "Host Game/Join Game" screen, press the stick upwards then change from "everyone" to "invite only".

Have fun.

In regards to Arthur I initially enjoyed his cynical views and I probably agree with him on a lot of things, but he's very dominating and has a much cruder humor than the rest of the crew, which is very detrimental to the show in my opinion. I'd rather he learned to restrain himself a little than go away though.

I was just about to come in and say that. It really irks me when people on podcasts get things blatantly wrong and theres nothing I can do about it.

I dont see whats so difficult about that, but everyone seems to fuck it up.

YES PEOPLE YOU CAN INVITE YOUR FRIENDS:lol

who you talking about? Arthur? (hes the new guy, not from 1up)

I really enjoyed this episode, but then hearing positive RE5 impressions makes me predisposed to like it after the verbal beating Nick gave it on Idle Thumbs. :lol

I enjoyed the general shooting discussion.

Good episode. :)

Sorry Nick, but I 100% absolutely agree with Ryan on Half Life 2. I see where youre coming from but its not accurate IMO. HL2 is a shooting game with a sci-fi narrative while COD4 is a shooter with a WW2 narrative.

Just because HL2 has exploration and character development and vehicle sections and a persistent fiction doesnt change the fact that the game is first and foremost a shooter. It really is.

Just my 2 cents.

The guy is unbearable. At first I didn't mind due to just being happy to hear ex-1Uppers but it's been 5 shows and he's gotten progressively worse.

That's harsh. He can be a bit crude and sometime a little bit too cynical, but otherwise I enjoy his perspective.

I feel like sometimes hes clutching at straws to back up his opinions which I find annoying, but all in all I think he adds to the show. I cant see any reason why he has to leave. He will get better at podcasting as time goes on as I think this is his first show (probably important to remember that).

More PC gaming talk, excellent! Listening right now.

eh, i'm getting pretty tired of these "dow II is like coh but......." discussions. if you must grasp for a nearest comparison, then sure, it's coh. but this shouldn't be the anchor to the discussion of a game that in a large number of ways couldn't be more different.

little of what was said couldn't be grasped within the first hour of play. i've now put 40 hours in, and those initial coh-eye'd impressions seem pretty defunct.

words to live by. They could name-drop the old Bungie tactic games as well, Soul Blighter was the pinnacle of my previous PC's life.

I've written off RE5 and I don't feel bad about it.

Youll play it ;)

Although maybe Ill feel the same as you. As much as I like coop I dont like being 'forced' into it to have the best gameplay experience. Games like RES5 are primarily singleplayer adventures for me, and if theres a coop option, great, Ill check it out after.

But knowing all the time that Im having a sub-par experience because this character following me around isnt a human is really annoying.

That's how I'm feeling about RE5 at the moment. I generally play very little online, unless it's some form of competitive multi-player, so I doubt I'll ever touch the co-op mode and having to drag around an AI doesn't really seem all that appealing, but then again it would realistically be a little much to ask for a scalable single player experience in addition to the co-op.

Have anyone said anything about the online co-op yet? Like voice chat or drop in/drop out function, etc?

I can put up with a lot from games (hell, I was an officer in the Too Human defense force) but I can't handle controls that make a game feel clunky or slow.

I'm not an RE fan though, I loved the PS1 games but never made it past them. I felt like they sort of got left behind. My loss, I am sure.

Voice chat is always on in-game and it is drop-in, drop-out, yes.

I have never had any issue with the AI during the two demo scenarios. Just leave her in Cover Mode (default mode) and she sticks to your back like glue, occasionally firing off a few rounds, picking up some ammo, healing you/herself if your health is low, completing a co-op task or giving you her remaining ammo if you are running low. As long as you're not doing anything stupid, she isn't intrusive, at all. It plays like a single-player game (as opposed to a game long escort mission), at least in the demo. We'll see what happens when it comes to bosses, although that's probably when the "Attack" mode will become actually useful.

yes to both VC and drop in/out

I think there is one issue and one issue alone that could solve all the problems with RES5. If CAPCOM had decided to stay true to the series at keep it more along the lines of survival horror with exploration and puzzles, rather than just another action game everything would be great.

Im not saying Res4 was shit, and Res5 could easily have taken everything that was great about Res4 and still applied it within the framework of a survival horror game.

But then again, I guess I havent played it yet, and Ryan and Co. seemed pretty chuffed with the final build they were playing. Time will tell I suppose.

This "Halo is a better shooter than Half-Life" and "HL is not a shooter" discussion was.. well pretty dull and unrewarding to be honest.
