Football Thread 2014/2015 |OT11| This Is Our Year!

Fixed.

We can also do:
----------------De Gea-----------
Rafael/Smalling -- Jones -- Rojo -- Shaw
-------------Carrick -- Blind
Herrera/Januzaj--- Mata/Rooney ----- Di Maria
---------------Falcao

This will never happen although it should. This gives us the most balance and would help protect the back 4. Could also play Mata on the right or left, he and Di Maria can cut in with Rafael and Shaw providing the width. I think it's strange that we haven't seen him try a 4-2-3-1 when he was using it just a few years ago at Bayern.

That's going to be a really unbalanced team.

I would have Rooney up front and put Herrera in the "number 10" role. Bin Mata.

We are missing somebody to perfectly complement Di Maria in that diamond formation. Strootman for instance would be ideal.

Yeah its not perfect, like you say Strootman or someone similar would be great.

He used it against City and Chelsea.

Carrick at the base, Herrera in your someone spot. I'd also drop one of Rumbo or RVP for Rooney and move Adnan/Mata into the hole.

Yeah I was thinking maybe Mata/Adnan there, Carrick at base and Herrera on right makes sense :) so:

------------De Gea-------------
-Rafael-Jones-Rojo-Shaw
-------------Carrick-------------
-----Herrera--Di Maria-------
--------------Mata---------------
-----Falcao-------Rooney----

That works too.

Cartoon, pls. I'd take Valencia as RB before Smalling. Smalling should never play anywhere else but at CB.

4-4-2 Diamond is the way to go with Mata, Januzaj, Blind, Fellaini as rotation options depending on the opponent. Front 3 rotation should be RVP, Rooney, Falcon.

Forget all this nonsense of Rooney as box to box MF, Di Maria as second striker, Herrera as sub, Blind as LCB, etc etc.

Who's telling King Gaal?

Yeah this is gr8, but without transfers that would be the team I'd go for.

I will take the list to Van Ghoul! Which way to Manchester?

where does Bale fit into these Utd teams?

Change to a 4-2-3-1 with him on the right, or switching wings with ADM/Januzaj. Strootman, Carrick as CMs, your choice of AMF.

Bayern picks up another Austrian youngster in Flavius Daniliuc, coming from Madrid. Alaba is supposed to have been instrumental in the transfer.

Real, our farm team.

Man Utd GAF was signing Mata in hindsight a mistake?

You lot dont seem to like him, however I think he's far to good to be used as a squad player. He's someone you can build a team around.

It's like you guys trying to accommodate everyone in a system and loose everyones strengths (see Arsenals dreaded 4-1-4-1 system).

The mistake has been buying him and then never using him in a role or set up where he's most effective.

I don't think he's a bad player, or even a bad signing. However, rather than trying to build a team around him, as you say, it seems that a load of players were signed without necessarily considering where they would fit in, so he often seems to lose out when trying to crowbar all of the attacking options into a team.

Best comment so far about Defoe to Sunderland:

"When Harry Redknapp isn't involved in a deal to sign Defoe you know it's too expensive.

The bloke would have his children if he had a womb."

Harry Redknapp, Jermaine Defoe, and Niko Kranjcar are like the weird threesome of English football.

Nope, he's top quality, but you have to play him in his best position. 3-5-2 doesn't allow it, and moving Rooney back to a MF position means he'll always be ahead of Mata if the spot is even available. That's part of why people want to see the diamond back. It allows a lot of players to go back to their best positions, including Mata.

Did we need him? I don't think so.

Have we used him properly? Not at all.

He needs to play in his position and he needs to play in the proper system. We have hardly done that with him.

Great player that needs a team to be built around his strengths, and we can't really fit everyone in the team and offer that. I'd rather have Rooney and ADM central than Mata, so there's his downfall really.

Mata looked good when Gaal played him deeper but he's a lot better whenever Herrera plays.

I hope we start Herrera vs QPR but I doubt it. Will probably go back to 352 and Fellaini on the right.

Mata is a luxury player, as others have said, need a team built around him. I've not been that impressed by him so far. He was a good name to sign but we've not seen the same performances from him that Chelsea did.

When we were down in South Florida at the end of December, I saw the most beautiful looking car I'd ever seen. And it's beauty was in its simplicity.

White lambo with black rims, black trim, white and black logo.. I was absolutely blown away. Oddly, the dude was going at or below the speed limit (70 mph). Often when you see people in these kinds of cars they are going way too fast but this guy was just enjoying the ride. I was eternally jealous.
Thank you for dignifying my drivel with your post :(

That is indeed a great combo. If he was driving slow enough to notice then I bet he was jealous of your ginger beard and gorgeous wife

Maybe he thought he was done at PL level, and discovered that he's too good for the MLS?

Can see Gerrard doing the same tbh, though he'd be 36 after a single season over there.

Defoe really didn't play much at TFC.. was out "injured" for much of the campaign after a good start. The word was that he was more or less just refusing to play so their fans weren't happy with him so this is good for all involved.

Luxury player is a bit harsh, I think. A lot of very good players need to play in a team that plays to their strengths - there aren't many that simply do their thing no matter what the set up is.

Mata is a really talented player and crucially, a goal scorer too - although we didn't see that in the Spurs/Saints game :(

But he needs to be playing centrally in a team that creates space in and around the box for him to drop in to and to play passes into - and that just not how United have been playing lately.

The Defoe £14m is fee plus wages over the 3 and a half years.

Jozy wants £3.5m for 6 years off the MLS. So we should say he's costing over £20m, right?

Maybe, but he doesn't seem the sort of player for us who can really take the initiative to change a match and impose himself on it. Thinking about it, luxury is harsh but it's more that I just don't see him as being a game changing player. He does undoubtedly have quality but there is just something else he's missing.

Had he not missed two chances that should've been goals for a player like him at the weekend I might be kinder but someone of his ability should be scoring those and winning the game.

yeah he often gets put on an island because of the 3-5-2. teams that are compact defensively will just wait til Mata gets it and then swarm. He gets no help because the forwards are not making runs and drawing defenders, and the other midfielders are too deep to help. by the time he turns around he has a man or two looking to tackle.

Haha, thank you as always. It was something along these lines (don't remember the exact model, but you get the gist).. I wanted to just kind of drive alongside this dude forever to soak it up by osmosis.

What do you mean by game changer, is mata going to take on three players and rifle a shot into the top corner. No. However does he have the ability to play eye of the needles passes to open up an opportunity out of nothing. Yes.

Mata can score, again I think your under estimating how much confidence goes into scoring when you get into those positions.

The more you get infront of goal, the calmer and the you can relax and allow your instincts to take over, this goes for any player. When you loose confidence no matter who you are, you over think it. See Saurez, see Walcott for recent examples of this. Anyone who has had a bad run of form the first few times they get goal scoring opportunities.

Both of those things, however we have rarely, if ever, seen that at United.
