DRIVECLUB New Track Preview: Nakasendo, Japan

I don't think Sony will ever release actual sales numbers of DriveClub...

Well there are ~600K people on the leaderboards, and DC was bundled in with the PS4 in the EU prior to Xmas. IIRC it also maintained a higher position in the UK than FH2, and pretty much by default would have sold more in Europe. Very high (as a % of the total) digital sales as well from what I remember of comments on threads on Gaf.

Do you guys think we're gonna see 60s-early 2000s Japanese/American cars? So far, the game only has new/fairly new cars and generally, the older model Japanese/American cars are somewhat more popular among enthusiasts (same with European cars, but I think you get my point).

Of course, it's kind of moot since there's no tuning, which defeats the purpose of having an FC3S :( I love the car, but I don't wanna drive it stock, unless they have it "tuned" to be a beast at default which I don't mind :)

I know this is not likely (or feasible), but I think it would be cool if when the PS+ version comes out and you own the physical copy of the game, you can get the full digital upgrade (as long as its tied to the account in which the physical copy was first used). I know this won't happen, but it'd be cool.

Rushy already said the sales are surpassing their expectations also not a month ago Evolution studio hired new people, that only mean they are doing good and moving forward

There's actually closer to 700k. I have a friend who hasnt played the game much and he's sitting at 691 000

Agreed. Or just mix it up to have a healthy portion of tight and narrow, as well as wide, like in most of the P2P tracks they've already included or introduced. As I said, the sticky barrier thing being reduced helps as it is.

As much as I disagree with Nasanu about this track lacking the aesthetic properties of a Japanese track, I do agree that there is a somewhat lack of narrowness in certain sectors. Most of the windy mountain hairpin sections are essentially three lane including the added safety grid edge, instead of being two lane with the grid. A little bit disappointing. Was sort of expecting an Initial D, break neck, edge of your seat millimetre precision, real Dark Souls of racing type Japan downhill mountain track. But maybe I'll change my tune once I play it. Hmm…

Yeah, I'll wait until I play it to comment further, but I doubt it's going to give the same level of gratification and sense of danger as this. #Narrowtracks4life

I suppose this is a good enough reason to make "everything" wider. It probably won't increase sales, but they probably don't want to isolate the people who don't want to get better at the game. They're probably gonna go for a jack of all trades sort of deal that's popular to do nowadays and make 2 or 3 out of every 5 tracks "accessible", or have every new track be made with more of a focus on being "accessible" with slightly more wide sectors than narrow ones.

True, but I expect these people to put the game up rather quickly and soon move on to something else, whereas the ones who actually learn and want to drive better will keep coming back to replay these awesome tightly designed tracks and get better times even years down the line. Evo's tweet mentioned the wideness design is applied to other Japan tracks; I'm hoping it doesn't apply to all of them considering we still have one more p2p track. It'd be a waste if that was all wide as well.

It's near 1 million actually. Just checked, schildpad_05 is ranked 979605.

Lowest person on my friend list is ranked at 818k and he has about an hour played (about 97k rep).

So near 1000k of people who have, at some point, played the game. Which would indicate that at least close to that number of copies have sold.

Not everyone has PS+ or online.

So possibly ever higher.

Which for a 7.5/10 reviewed game which had a clusterfuck of a launch on top of being delayed AND a new IP which lots of people were 'unsure' how it would sit alongside GT, I don't think it has done too badly.

I am also completely behind #Narrowtracks4life.

Although I love this video showing off this Japanese track, I think it would've been more effective(and more fun) to show a drift challenge video with this track, especially going downhill.

The stage really gives you the sense of scale in the game. Ending near the bottom of the bridge you crossed was pretty epic.

Looks amazing.

Glad they're doing free tracks, too. Shadowfall did as well, I think it's the best way to go for things like this. Give the maps free to keep the player base from being segmented, paid cosmetic/single player content/cars that add value without fragmenting the user base.

Indeed. Awesome way to do it.

Hopefully Driveclub doesn't turn out to be as under-appreciated as Killzone.

I'm pretty tempted to just go out and drop money on this. It seems with all the updates, additions etc it is now the game it should have been at launch

The news of the 30fps cap irked me at first....but im sure I will get used to it if there are no hitches. But damn, this game is good lookin

I have been playing games at 120hz on my PC for about 4 years now, but I think certain games (like Destiny) can feel really nice at 30fps if designed properly around it, and I think DriveClub is one of those games. It feels very responsive and smooth, there's a good sense of speed, and the motion blur works well in tandem with the frame rate. There aren't, in my limited experience, too many 30fps games out there that feel this nice.

Seems Driveclub is getting at good stream of significant updates and DLC. Just got the game myself since it was quite cheap in Europe as part of the January sale. From the little I played before work I think I'll really enjoy this game. Haven't played a proper racing game in years. First impressions are really good. I really appreciate that Evolution have implemented the "Playgo" functionality in a great way. After downloading just 3Gb I could already play a few tracks, and you can also see how much time there is left downloading other tracks. Wish all developers would take advantage of this functionality. Such a contrast to GTA where you had to download the whole 50Gb and then wait for it to install.

any update on more wheel support? I really want to put some money down for the dlc but the lack of support for other wheels really kills it for me.

The only thing that irks me about this Japanese teaser, is that they're racing a freaking Corvette of all cars. The width of the roads is fine, I don't really care much for touge or whatever. I had my fix of that with GRID.

Why no GTR? WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAI

Give us some good point to point with narrow roads, downhill, and I'll buy a season pass.

Oh, please let there be Ridge Racer Type 4 inspired tracks T_T

Holy shit you've played CONTRAST and 38% it!!! Sorry that I've doubted you.!! But I'll not send you shit lol ;) There's a lot of concerned guys, you are not one of them. Sorry.

I was going to say you're a good guy for offering that poster $20, but the whole offer was just a 'Sony owner' check? Fucking hell.

Weird Rushy has never commented on the lack of non European cars. It's frankly bizarre they release a Japanese track with no Japanese cars. I have a conspiracy theory they are getting cockblocked by PD.

Why would that be the case? Japanese cars are available in nearly every other racing game, I really doubt there's some kind of antagonizing going on behind the scenes between the studios of WWS.
It's the Illuminati, it's always the Illuminati.

I wonder how many casual fb/twitter users complained about the tracks being too tight. Those tight narrow sections were the best parts about the other point to point tracks. Not a fan of this move.

If only they had listened...

wide or narrow options would have been taken care of in course maker.

Evos :(

Had an insane race yesterday online in the xbow. The car is so nippy and clings to the road. I don't remember the name of the track but it has those observatories(15x time lapse). The sense of speed and sound damn. Will definitely be picking up the dlc now.

Btw some cars handle like complete trash. Way too much acceleration and zero grip(drift maybe?). One race I spent the whole time babysitting the car round every turn. If I even think of putting my foot on the gas I would spin out.

Dayum.

Sorry but I lived there and that track is not especially Japanese looking to me. Could be anywhere in the world. They could have given us a realistic touge, a city or a local town with its tiny alleyways and drive in shopping malls (I miss MSR...). But they chose a bland highway...

I'm not an expert but the track looks better than I expected. The torii looks very awkward though.

The yellow lines on the curves must be anti-drift mats. No drift event comfirned :p

I agree, I fear that Evolution may be pandering to some outspoken gamers perhaps a bit too much at present. Lowering AI aggressiveness, widening future tracks etc. I was looking forward to precarious narrow windy mountainous Japanese roads, and whilst they are still here to some degree, and whilst this track still looks insanely fun, they've also opened things up in areas. Hopefully they still release other tracks that are more narrow and windy, especially from Japan. Don't mind a few wider tracks though. Variety is the spice of life.

I think some of the complaints for the narrower tracks were partly to do with the ultra sticky walls and barriers etc. If they've already rectified or will be rectifying that to some extent, narrower tracks become more viable anyway.

That's my sentiment as well. Variety is good, and I have no problem with some of the tracks being wider, even if they wouldn't be totally accurate replication of the region. The most important thing to me is that it plays good. That being said, I hope they won't make the AI less aggressive due to the complaints.

Dear Evolution people,
i like your driveclub game a lot, but please be gentle and give the casual gamers what they deserve: nothing.
They'll buy your game and will resell it fast, and will not buy your next game because they think your games are too hard and you suck for this.
They crash against my car , they crash against every wall, they spin out at every turn whatever you do, they deserve nothing.
Be true to your vision, assemble a faithful community of hardcore gamers around your game, we will be there if you don't betray us seeking the casual's money.

A Gaffer.

Half serious, but yeah, go the Dark Soul route, it may happen that some casual may come back just because being good in driveclub is the next cool thing to be.

It has nothing to do with PD or any other studio. Lol. The truth is far more boring, as always. Japanese cars are coming. Just not yet :)

Beautiful track ... but a shame they made it wider because of people wanting an easier game.

It's sad that the majority of people in the last generations prefer games where you never lose/die. For me challenges are a core part of the fun in videogames.

Now Rushy, please, hurry up the replay feature. It's a sin a racing game with these amazing graphics without replays. Ah, and make it Gran Turismo style.

I'm gonna be honest. I bump into other cars. Sometimes I take a corner too fast on purpose and use another car as a cornering aid. I will block you from passing me. I might push you off the track if it looks like you are trying to high/low me in a turn. I only really worry about taking perfect lines when I'm in first and there's nobody in front of me. Until then, I'm only worried about being in first. Does this make me a bad person?

I'm not sure about a bad person, but certainly a bad driver.

I always try to drive clean ... even in single player races, when i made a mistake and hit another car, I apologise to the AI.
