Elite Squad I can't comment on as I haven't seen it, something that I will rectify asap, but what could The Raid 2 be nominated for? Certainly not Best Screenplay or Best Acting...maybe Best Directing? But I don't think the directing was anything to write home about apart from the fight scenes.

They should invent Best Stunts or Best Choreography award or something akin to that so The Raid 2 and films like it (John Wick, for example) can be nominated and win academy awards.

The stuntmen union has been trying for well over a decade to get it included, but the Academy keeps shutting it down.

I am absolutely livid over the lack of Jake Gyllenhaal. That was the performance of a lifetime for him -- he was incredible.

Lego Movie getting snubbed is definitely a big surprise. At least "Everything Is Awesome" got nominated.

David Oyelowo didn't get nominated either, which is really surprising. (I haven't seen Selma, but I've read nothing but good things about his performance.)

I think Boyhood takes Best Picture and Keaton and Moore take Best Actor and Actress.

Reznor and Ross not getting nominated for the Gone Girl score is bullshit.

Did Desplat really need two nominations? Come on.

Interstellar didn't get best cinematography nomination? Wat. Even the people who didn't really like the movie mention the photography as one of the best things.

So The Lego Movie, the movie that got the highest aggregated score for an animated movie among critics in 2014, wasn't even nominated for best animated picture?

Ah well, when it comes to animated movies, the Oscars are a joke and some random person on GAF is literally more trustworthy with their opinions. The people at the Oscars barely even watch the animated movies they nominate, let alone take them seriously. What a shame.

Lego movie was fine, but did it really deserve an Oscar nod? I'm not so sure guys, sorry.
Uh, yeah. There's a reason people were raving about it. It's a damn great movie. It's got amazing and quick joke delivery, beautiful effects, and a very touching conclusion. It was considered a shoe-in for best animated picture because it was such a great movie.

ACTOR:
Steve Carell - Foxcatcher
Bradley Cooper - American Sniper
Benedict Cumberbatch - The Imitation Game
Michael Keaton - Birdman
Eddie Redmayne - The Theory of Everything

What the fuck is this bullshit? No Jake but... Bradley Cooper for American Sniper?!

PICTURE:
American Sniper
Birdman
Boyhood
The Grand Budapest Hotel
The Imitation Game
Selma
The Theory of Everything
Whiplash

American Sniper for best movie?!?!

Shit Oscar nominations. Don't care who wins anymore.

Best animated feature film of the year

“Big Hero 6” Don Hall, Chris Williams and Roy Conli
“The Boxtrolls” Anthony Stacchi, Graham Annable and Travis Knight
“How to Train Your Dragon 2” Dean DeBlois and Bonnie Arnold
“Song of the Sea” Tomm Moore and Paul Young
“The Tale of the Princess Kaguya” Isao Takahata and Yoshiaki Nishimura

All of these got nominated while LEGO didn't.

It was a really strong year for cinematography, even in other blockbuster films.

Yeah, I got to watch the other films in the nominations, but I guess I wanted something more for the film.

Foreign language cat is pretty varied. Would have liked to see Force Majeure, sure. And I could see complaints about the lack of Mommy, or Winter Sleep. But Timbuktu and Tangerines were unexpected. With Cotillard in acting for Two Days One Night I think this spread is nicer.

nobody worry about Gyllenhaal-- he's in a Valle (Dallas Buyers Club, Wild) film this year. (along with Southpaw, for which he beefed up.) lock for the 88th.

I'm still hoping for it to happen one day soon,b ut knowing the not-exactly-progressive mindset of the Academy I expect I'll be getting up there by the time it happens.

Every year it's the same thing "What!? I don't like these noms! Well I didn't care about the Oscars anyway!".
I mean clearly you do care about the Oscars, or you wouldn't be annoyed by the noms. You wouldn't even be in the thread. People are way too adverse to admit they are invested in the winners.

Full list.

Nominees.

Good stuff! Would've hoped for more recognition for Guardians and Lego Movie but knowing the Academy I wasn't expecting that, so I'm fine.

American Sniper is Clint Eastwood, guy gets lots of love from the Oscars, not too surprised to see nominations there.

It's a little bit different with animated movies as its been shown time and time again that the academy doesn't take them seriously or treat them with respect.

As soon as the reviews came out, that was pretty much it for its major awards chances.

Very much so, yes. Birdman editing, too.

Honestly, I was more impressed with the editing than I was with the cinematography. Not that Lubezki didn't do a good job, but the effect of the "seamlessness" was really impressive.

I've yet to see the nominees, but it's impossible that 5 other actors have better performances than Jake Gyllenhaal this year.

Too bad that only half of the movies in Best Picture can already be seen here in The Netherlands. Three of them still have to release and one has released just now.

Just now seeing the nominations.

I dunno about you guys, but I'm getting the sense the academy is looking to give Wes Anderson a lot of fuckin statues this year.

Also lookin like Michael Keaton is getting his Oscar.

It's interesting that Bennett Miller is the first director to be nominated without his film being nominated for Best Picture since they expanded the BP field to 10.

Hey can anyone vouch for Theory of Everything here? I've been seriously doubting it but it's getting a hell of a lot of recognition, I'm kind of rooting for someone else in the actor race, hoping for Carrell Keaton or Cumberbatch all good with me. Is it a good movie though? I want to catch up on some of the nominees, wondering if it's worth it.

Kaguya better win since Lego movie isn't nominated.

No one who votes for this has actually seen it. It will go for the one who did the best in the box-office.

I agree with you, by the way

It is a okay, feel good (despite of Hawkins deteriorating condition) film. It is not offensive by any means but I wouldn't put it in a Best of 2014 list. Main performances are good, but not ground breaking, in my humble opinion.
In the end, Hawkins legacy carries the movie out. The film itself would be pretty forgettable if it wasn't for real life Hawkins and the fact that he achieved so much despite everything. It is worth seeing but don't believe the hype. You've seen plenty of similar films before.

It's quite good.

As a movie, it's definitely not a masterpiece. Redmayne's acting is off the charts tho, so it's worth watching it for that alone (and Felicity Jones is fantastic, other than absolutely beautiful)

Nobody who votes gives a fuck about the animated category.

HTTD2 will win just because however many dads sat through it with their kids.
