Wii Titles (SMG2, Metroid Prime trilogy and Punch Out!) Announced for Wii U eShop

I got Galaxy 2. A little disappointing that this is mostly just a fancy shortcut to the Wii mode, I can't access the Wii U home button menu or see my friends list, and quitting out of the game actually resets the system. I thought for sure there'd be a Miiverse for this. Plus, I had to stop the game, reboot, go back into the Wii U menu and set the wiimote as player 1 before the game would even recognize it.

At the end of the day I got it for $10 so I can't complain too much, but this feels like a pretty lazy release, not the kind of polish and perfectionism one expects from Nintendo. The one positive is that at least it lists time played in the Wii U system log, so it's not entirely cut off. If these sell maybe they can manage better integration as time goes on.

Incidentally, does anybody know if others on your friends list can see you in the game while you're playing, or do you show up as offline/in nothing?

GCN will be tricky. They have to emulate a memory card some how, Wii U controllers lack analog triggers (important to Mario Sunshine!) and figure out something to do to access the home menu so you aren't just left hanging when you're done playing.

I think it'll come eventually, but there's certainly more technical hurdles than Wii Ports.

Ahhh, very good points. I think the memory card issue is an easier one... Sony was able to emulate PS1 and PS2 memory cards on the PS3.

But the lack of analog triggers is indeed a more serious problem. Maybe those games that require analog trigger action would be restricted to be played only with the GameCube adapter plus controller. It would make me feel awesome to be able to use those adapters for things beyond just Smash 4.
 
As someone said, the sad thing about this is that there is pretty much no way a Metroid Prime Trilogy HD Remaster is in the cards if they are releasing the title on the VC. :(

Hopefully we can at least maybe get another Prime game down the road.

But you're not going to get (or should expect) that sort of work in a 10 dollar port. The amount of money building an entirely different control scheme and hacking the ROM to support it and add a menu to switch controls requires time and money that I wouldn't expect them to spend on a cheap port. I apologize, it's just annoying reading the same posts every single page

They're not even touching the ROMs at all with these.

Yes there is. Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask are both on the Wii VC.

Nah, that doesn't wash. These are $20 ports, not $10. They're just on sale for the first week for each of the first three games. That's the same price Capcom is launching their Resident Evil Remaster at, it's perfectly in line with expectations for people to want some kind of tweaks to these.

Well no one even needs Nintendo for HD Metroid thanks to Dolphin, although setting up the wiimote + sensor is a hassle

Anyway $10 for the trilogy is a steal

20 dollar ports of 50+ dollar games.
 
Can disk based games that have CC support use the gamepad buttons too or is it just these digital titles? I'll double dip for handful of games I already own if its the latter.

You can't.

I hope they do this, because that means every Wii Virtual Console title is playable on the Wii U pad if they let you use it for VC and WiiWare as well.
 
I'm very torn. I have Mario Galaxy2 on a disc, but I would like to buy it as digital also, but can't stop thinking I'm wasting my money since there is almost no difference but the effort of launching the game, since I don't care for the statistics.. Uugh! Am I this lazy I will pay yet another 10 (times 3)€ for these games just to not have to get up the sofa?

SMG is still WIDELY available in stores, both used and new, for a very reasonable price.

SMG2 has largely been unavailable for much less than like $50-60 for a while now.

Outside of Punch Out, all of the games they have announced are OOP and on the pricier side. I'd be shocked that they didn't have Xenoblade in there if it weren't coming out for n3DS.

I'd think Yoshi is a factor as well since there's VC Yoshi, 3ds Yoshi, upcoming Wii U Yoshi, Smash and an amiibo. More Yoshi exposure might lead to more sales of those other games.

well, nothing can solve the lack of analog shoulder buttons issue. Nintendo messed up bad with that one when they made the Wii U.

they won't release games that require the GC adapter and many of the popular games require analog shoulder buttons to work properly. some games could get around this but that's a few.

As was Resident Evil, once upon a time. Honestly, you can apologize for Nintendo all you want here, but they're not operating in a vacuum and they're going to lose out on sales if they're not going to be competitive with what others in the industry are offering.

I'm not going to get really upset over the state of these ports, but I'm not going to go to bat for them either if they're going to charge $20 for a product that's not even integrated with the system OS.

Or at least Metroid Prime 1 & 2 because those were first designed with traditional controls in mind, so it would have been brainless to include that scheme.

Take Resident Evil 4. If the Wii version of that game ever gets released on the eShop, you'll be able to control it fully with the Gamepad, because it was well designed enough to include the classic control scheme as an alternative control scheme.

But really the problems don't stop there. Nintendo may have hacked their way to emulate a CC with the Gamepad, but what about the Wii U Pro? Hopefully they will be able to let you use it in the future, but it just shows how Nintendo's whole strategy and approach wasn't properly thought through.

The Wii U Pro Controller will work as well. They said that during the Direct.

As for the rest, that would require much more money and testing.

If you're talking about Galaxy and Metroid you can't play with Wii U Controller.

I think retailers are getting rid of the copies here as well and that's why the prices are so low. At one point I even thought of buying a copy just to sell it for a high price, but after seeing the price so low in many other places, I figured it's not worth much anyway.

I think that's the philosophy of the drip feeding. Not saying it's wrong or right (it is annoying to the consumer) but there must be some data on Nintendo's end that classic titles sell better launch week with little competition and then drop way off the grid.

Oh I definitely agree with releasing them weekly. Just tell us what's coming...even if its "TBD Twilight Princess, Zak and Wiki, Xenoblade, etc."
 
I bought Mario Galaxy 2 but I'm having a weird wiimote issue. The pointer seems to act choppy in game. When I'm back at the Wii U menu it is fine. I have two wiimotes and tried them both out. I can't figure out the reason. Any tips?

Is your sensor bar position set right (i.e. above/below TV)? Can really screw it up if not. Make sure you're a decent distance from your TV too.

Then you can just redeem the download code when you have the capacity for it.
