Zelda fans - are you really expecting Zelda U this year?

They've already confirmed it multiple times... Not sure why this is even a thread.

I mean to think that it won't hit this year is a little thick. How long have they been working on it?

4 years since Skyward Sword. I'd expect a November release for the holidays as there are no other big games in the pipeline that seem suitably big for the season.

Yeah, why put themselves on the hook the way they did at the VGA if they weren't absolutely confident about the 2015 release?

Also, while Skyward Sword sold alright, the hype had died down quite a bit after the delay. I think that they would of course delay the game if they need to, rather than release an unfinished or buggy product, but I think that they want to avoid a Skyward Sword situation as much as possible. People aren't as understanding about the delays as they were in the Twilight Princess days.

It's not like they have a choice, it's Nintendo's biggest gun that's slated for this year. Granted there's Star Fox & Xenoblade X, but neither of them bring the numbers & hype to the less hardcore gamers that Zelda does.

I'm starting to believe that some people want this game to be delayed. Can't have another repeat of the 2014 GAF GOTY thread, I guess.

To those saying "they always delay Zelda", they got Smash out before the end of 2014.

Smash doesn't really have a history of constant delays and complete overhauls like Zelda does. Hell, I'm surprised some people thought Smash wouldn't make 2014.
It's not really the same.
Brawl is a special case, it's devs were trying to cram in fully realized content like Sonic, STH music, and Green Hill Zone very late in the game. Before that, games within the series have always been released in a somewhat timely manner.

I think it's this year for sure. It's their biggest game they have right now since the other big players have already been released. Nintendo's holiday will be lacking if Zelda isn't there.

Too early to make a call until it's closer to E3 time. Who knows if it's running into development trouble at this point.

Weren't OoT and TP both delayed because of hardware reasons rather than game development being the problem? Is there some other Zelda game aside from SS that was delayed due to tea table upending or something similar?

It's this year, the game has been in development for some years.

As for the game, no motion controls except gyroscope? Count me in!
I really like the aesthetics of the game, and those teasers and presentations make me shiver a little inside *I need this*

They put a lot of effort in the world map, as for the dungeons i know they'll do it too. That's what they have done many times before and will do again.

Believe in their awesomeness...Believe!

Additionally, Xenoblade Chronicles X already has a release date.

In Japan. It does not have a release date in the west.

Also, I'm not adamant Zelda isn't releasing this year, but I am skeptical that it will. There is a difference.

The reason I am skeptical is due to Nintendo's past. I take that into account far more than their current promise of a 2015 release. Nintendo has made plenty of similar promises in the past that weren't fulfilled.

I want the game to be great, so I am in no rush for Zelda. If it misses 2015, I won't be bothered. It it makes Holiday 2015, yay!

I think Nintendo will try with 2015 and abandon the Wii U next year almost completely.

Weren't OoT and TP both delayed because of hardware reasons rather than game development being the problem? Is there some other Zelda game aside from SS that was delayed due to tea table upending or something similar?

OoT was a pretty different game by the time the N64 had launched.
"Zelda 64" had tons of unique features and content (more elaborate attack animations, more spells, more dungeons, a persistent Hyrule, 3D forest, 3D towns, etc.) that only existed thanks to the power of the 64DD; From what I've been able to gather over the years, the failure of the 64DD essentially caused them to overhaul the project and re-purpose it for a cartridge based console with limited capabilities.
So yeah I guess you could say it was for hardware reasons.
But the same can be said for SS, it seems like they were just having trouble with the motion controls before Wii Sports Resort came about, but it's pretty clear that they knew what they wanted to do going by the fact that Fi's final design was shown in 2009

TP was definitely overhauled a few times during it's development, they've admitted as much in the Iwata Asks (Hell, even the 2005 GDC trailer is indicative of this);Going by what is known I think it's pretty likely that the game was delayed because the failed NGC was on it's very last leg, they could make more money on two consoles, and they were still trying to refine/change/fix elements within a somewhat poorly thought out early build of Twilight Princess.

I am cautiously optimistic, I know the trackrecord on Zelda delays but Link between worlds actually made the promised release as well.

I wouldn't be shocked it it was delayed, but yes I am expecting it this year. They've not given any indication that a delay might be in store as of yet. I expect a huge blowout at E3 and a November release date.

4 years is probably enough time to finish it. They probably NEED it out by the end of 2015 if they want to stay relevant in the face of their competition's lineups. inb4 it's already irrelevant

For now, yes. Nintendo has said 2015, no reason to believe there's a delay yet. Miyamoto said Star Fox will release before Zelda, so when we get a Star Fox date we know what to expect.

They already confirmed a 2015 release several time by now. Also Monolithsoft almost finished their work with Xenoblade X (April release in Japan), so they are likely already helping in the development of Zelda like they did with Skyward Sword. While there have been some side projects like Grezzos Majoras Mask project and Link Between Worlds, you have to keep in mind that by the end of the year Skyward Sword launched 4 years ago, plenty time to develop a new entry on console

I'd say it'll make 2015, for several reasons:
- it will have 4 years of development
- they have monolith Kyoto to create assets for zelda & star fox. Even monolith tokyo could be doing texturing/modelling for that last crunch periode since Xenoblade is as good as done.
- they must have a good HD pipeline by now. Their internal engine 3D has been stable since 3D world.
- Majora's mask is Grezzo. Wind Waker HD was a good exercise, but didn't need a huge effort. ALBW was also a smaller project, together with monolith & SRD Co
- They don't have another holiday launch game at the moment. Star fox isn't a launch game. Only a new mario and/or animal crossing could fill this spot. I have a feeling we won't see a main mario game on wiiU this year besides mario maker (and galaxy2 VC).
- If they have to delay it, it'll be for a year.

I think Nintendo will try with 2015 and abandon the Wii U next year almost completely.
Nah, 2016 will still be ok. They'll at least have some DLC, SMTxFireEmblem, Pokken, Metroid(?), Animal Crossing (?) etc
2017 will be a dump though, because the next handheld will be out and they'll be fully dedicated to the launch of their next console.

This year. Next year. The year after. Or whenever.

I'm not interested in contemplating on when Zelda U comes out. I'm interested in the fact that as Nintendo releases the game, I will have complete confidence that this game will blow my mind and rekindle my childhood just like every Zelda game (that I have played) that has come before the next one. If there's one thing that you can count on with today's Nintendo, it's that games will be made with care.

I look forward to playing the next Zelda game - whenever that may be. And I shall play the hell out of it. I can't say that with many other games from other developers - though there are plenty of great studios outside of Nintendo.

I think it's coming out this year. Aonuma said at one point that they could've shown the game at E3 2013 but decided against it. It's been in development for a long time now and they've been so insistent about the 2015 release date that I can't help but believe them.

While Ocarina of Time, Twilight Princess and Skyward Sword all got delayed in the past, they were all delayed for special reasons. With OoT they were completely overhauling the way a Zelda game was played, with TP they delayed the game purely to release it on the Wii and with SS they had to restart development from scratch entirely so that they could make use of motion controls. No such circumstances seem to be at hand for Zelda U, so I don't think a delay is as guaranteed to happen as a lot of people do.

That said, Zelda U is the first Zelda game made in HD from the ground up and also looks to be an absolutely enormous game. Because it's such a big project compared to previous Zelda games, a delay purely to get all that work done wouldn't surprise me too much.

Preferably, I'd want to play Zelda U before the end of the year. However, if they really do delay the game in order to polish it further then you won't hear me complaining. I don't want Nintendo to release the game until they're entirely satisfied with it.

They usually don't show gameplay of Zelda titles unless it's far into development, and we already got two showings at E3 and VGX last year. That and the fact they don't really have anything else for the latter half of the year besides Starfox.

yes I am

this is Nintendo's big holiday Wii U game. it essentially has to come out before Christmas this year.

I'm banking on November 20th, 2015

Yes.

Even with other titles like Splatoon being strongly advertised, Xenoblade X and Zelda U are the two BIG titles for WiiU this year. More than they should, it seems like they actually need to get it ready for this year's end.

Fully expect Zelda to be the big holiday game this year in November. Nintendo has positioned it was a 2015 game for some time. Just like like Smash Bros it "MUST" come out. Not a want from them but a need for it to be released as they said it would in 2015. They've also been working on it for some time. Skyward Sword released in 2012 and that's a significant amount of time for the Zelda team to be focused on the game.

In addition to that Nintendo has shown in recent years they will pull other Nintendo games to work on different games. For example having their Retro Studios work on Mario Kart. Having Monolith Soft work on Skyward Sword and other games. I expect as games such as Xenoblade Chronicles X, Splatoon, Captain Toad, and a few others are done or were finish that more staff are/were brought onto the Zelda team to push it further along and/or polish more of the game. Nintendo has also shown they have no problem with working with third party developers to get extra development staff as needed. Bandai Namco developing Wii Fit U and Smash Bros Wii U/3DS for example. Greezo being the ones responsible for the Zelda 3DS remakes. An act which also freed up the Zelda team over the years to focus on the Wii U game.

This game will come out in 2015 even if other games have to be delayed in the process. It's far to important for it not to come out.

Calling for the release date a week before Black Friday in November 2015 with it's own line of Amiibo.

How many times do they have to reconfirm it? They said 2015 like 3 times

From an historical point of view, Zelda titles, and especially first Zelda for a new home system, have been delayed considerably. Ocarina of Time, the Wind Waker, Twilight Princess.

So, it's thinkable and honestly likely that this Zelda will suffer the same fate. Although maybe not to the same extent.

Unless they have been bullshitting, I feel like they are quite on track with what they want to do with Zelda U. They have HD experience from Wind Waker HD, and confirmation that the direction they're going in works with the praise from Link Between Worlds. I feel like they have a smoother plan compared to past Zeldas, especially the development hell from Twilight Princess.

Also they pretty much have to have a hard hitter this holiday so yeah, I believe they are putting a bunch on resources on making this happen. #Believe

November 20th, 2015.

Count on it.

haha yup

Nintendo can be pretty predictable when they have to get their games out on time

is it a Friday? check. last possible chance to get it one shelves prior to Black Friday? check. occupying the 3D World/Smash Bros. slot? check. all we need now is a big 3DS game to launch alongside it.

There's not an announced title that they'd use as their big holiday title as opposed to Zelda. If Zelda were to be delayed, we would hear of:
-A new Mario platformer
-A new Animal Crossing
-A major (retail release) Smash Bros or Mario Kart DLC pack
Let's look at what their biggest console title for each year in the past decade was:
2014: Super Smash Bros for Wii U
2013: Super Mario 3D World
2012: New Super Mario Bros U
2011: The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword
2010*: Donkey Kong Country Returns
2009: New Super Mario Bros. Wii
2008: Animal Crossing: City Folk
2007: Super Mario Galaxy
2006: The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess
2005*: Pokemon XD: Gale of Darkness/ Mario Party 7
With the exception of periods where development was swapping to new consoles (2005 and 2010), Mainline Marios, Smashes, Zeldas, and Animal Crossing are the only titles Nintendo has trusted as a big holiday console title (though I'm sure they'd count Mario Kart if console development ever ended around a holiday). Considering none of the teams for these games are all that free bar maybe the mainline Mario teams, I think Zelda U coming this year is a safe bet.

Fixed it for you.

Yes. Because they have made such a point of repeating that it will be out in 2015. And because they can't possibly have anything else this huge hiding for holiday.

Right, Nintendo's never surprised people at E3 with newly announced games for the holidays.

New Super Mario Bros. Wii
Animal Crossing City Folk
Donkey Kong Country Returns
Super Mario 3D World

No. I expect it to launch in Fall 2016.
Why ? So that Nintendo might be able to launch on the WII U2, the same console without the gamepad or the install base. They can delay all their projects while only releasing drip-feed eshop games during 2016.
Better not to localize Xenoblade as well.

Of course it's coming.

I believe it'll come out in November, but it wouldn't surprise me if it got delayed. I think realistically, Nintendo would delay another title and focus their efforts on Zelda before allowing it to slip past the holiday shopping period

I don't have enough information about the state of development of the game to make an educated guess. Trying to guess its release date would be just throwing potshots. My best guess for its release is whatever Nintendo estimates the release date is.

Yeah, I do. Twilight Princess was the last Zelda game to have crazy games, as far as I remember. Miyamoto had implied early 2011 for Skyward Sword in interviews at points, but that was never officially announced by Nintendo, it was always "2011" and they stuck to that.

They'll do what they presumably do every year after planning fall schedules, once E3 is over:

Assign as much staff from as many teams/ studios as needed to get the big holiday games finished and polished in time.

Let's be honest. Delays are never a surprise. Nintendo knows by probably early August whether or not a game can be reasonably finished in time for the holidays, and/ or whether they can afford to push it out til the next year. It all depends on what else they have that can drive sales through the holidays. Some years they have more options than others.

A lot of people forget, but originally, Iwata stated in an Iwata Asks from 2011/ 2012 that he would like the next console Zelda finished in three years instead of five. Well, end of 2015 is four years, not three. This game has already taken too long.

Put frankly; home console Zelda games in the last ten years have been taking way too long to come to market:

1998 - Ocarina of Time
1999 - none
2000 - Majora's Mask
2001 - none
2002 - Wind Waker (in JP; March 2003 in the west)
2004 - none
2005 - none
2006 - Twilight Princess
2007 - none
2008 - none
2009 - none
2010 - none
2011 - Skyward Sword
2012 - none
2013 - none
2014 - none
2015 - Zelda Wii U
