The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Mod Discussion and News [Creation Kit released]

deciding to go HAM with about 350 different modifications.

Holy...

- I've got this annoying issue with light intensity lowering and raising as I move through a location. It's clearly something to do with the lights in relation to my character as I can take one step back and forth and see lights flicker on and off perfectly in sync with my movement. Being flamed by a dragon completely blinds me for a few seconds too. What is this and how do I get rid of it? Like with weather, I've gone through all the lighting mods and settled on ELFX. None of them got rid of this annoyance. Help?

Sounds like conflicting light mods, as in ELFX (or whatever you use) is conflicting with another mod that also edits the lights in the area you are in for the moment.

- How do I properly figure out CTD issues? I know about LOOT and load orders, TES5edit and dirty edits, the memory allocation fix, ENBoost and the usual stuff. What I don't know is how to properly read Papyrus logs and figure out where to go from there. I do know that almost every time I get a crash, there's stuff by skyBirds and Wearable Lanterns at the bottom of papyrus.0.log. Is that a strong hint that they're culprits or is it just as likely that something else is making these mods crash without showing up in the log?

With 350 mods, maybe you are just pushing Skyrim to the breaking limit, maybe temporary turn off a mod plugin you KNOW eats TONS of memory, and then turn skyBirds and Wearable Lanterns on, see it it CTD's still.

But it's everywhere and I don't think I have anything else that modifies lighting... I wish you could just export a neat .txt of your NMM list to share (and bring to work where I am now).

I did a complete reinstall after I decided to go all in, and I'm pretty sure the flickering didn't happen before the reinstall. Can installation order with some other mod have done it? Is it possibly a clash with some smoke mod? Ugh, I thought I did everything in the right order this time...

Haha, oh, I was exaggerating the number. I'm counting each download as a separate mod even if they're clearly not. I mean, overwriting 2KHD's animals with Bellyache's and then overwriting Belly's wolves with True Wolves should have zero effect (aside from more VRAM usage). I only have about 120 actual ESPs.

Problem for me is, I really can't quite figure out what's a resource hog and what isn't. For example that Warzones 2015 thing sounds like it would have about six million scripts and be extremely taxing, so I didn't even look twice at it. Then I'll install for example a sweet new armor and it apparently comes with scripts and causes crashes and problems when it has absolutely no reason to, IMO, nor is it noted on the mod page...

Oh, absolutely, installation order or more accurately what mod is overwriting a previous mods files can indeed cause issues / break things.

I have to carefully think myself when I'm going to install the following mode soon ->

Skyrim HD
Terrain Bump
Better Dynamic Snow
Quality Snow HD
RIS - Real Ice and Snow
SMIM
ELFX

These can cause quite the headache on what should overwrite what and so on to not break functionality.

Luckily I do not have script heavy mods so far, mostly texture replacements and a few mesh mods.

Hoo boy.

So, there's been a strange occurrence where, for some reason, I can't get Patchus Maximus for PM 1.01 to work, but I *can* get the patcher working for PM 1.00. For whatever reason, whatever updates were included in the latest patcher just plain don't seem to like my installation of Java, despite having double-checked that it's the right version.

Time to rethink the load order again, slotting back the old stuff.

I'm still trying to prepare myself mentally for my plan to get a couple of hundred mods and replay the game in February. Can't say I'm looking forward to setting it all up, but it'll be worth it once it's all working properly. The mod organizer will likely be a huge help.

For some reason Perkus Maximus (I think that's the one anyway since it comes bundled with weapons) has disproportionately distributed scimitars across the leveled lists for NPC inventories. Everyone's using them. Bandits, guards, necromancers... It's like curved swords suddenly became the hottest new fashion accessory in Skyrim.

Curved. Swords.

Skyrim HD
Terrain Bump
Better Dynamic Snow
Quality Snow HD
RIS - Real Ice and Snow
SMIM
ELFX
Well, as a bit of an exercise for myself, let me give this a shot...

Skyrim HD: You mean official HD or 2KHD? If official, just load whatever ESP files below it in the load order. If you mean 2KHD, just overwrite whatever from it with whatever you want from below.
Terrain Bump: I haven't tried this one because, IMO, the screenshots look worse than vanilla. What does it actually do?
BDS: This one's simple, since I have never seen any other mod touch this specific texture. Overwrite. (I wish there was a better one because this texture looks like dirty ass on vertical surfaces, like for example the walls of Windhelm... I think I have to uninstall it now that I've noticed. Sorry if I just made you notice.)
QS: This is just one texture AFAIK. Just overwrite whatever texture it may conflict with.
RIS: Haven't used this one either, but I presume it's just a texture. If it's one of the mods that add refraction and stuff to make the ice fancier, it might actually mess around with lighting. Maybe install it last and look for conflicts with ELFX and if the filename sounds specific enough (like "ice.dds" and not "entireworld.dds"), just overwrite?
SMIM: Install before ELFX and overwrite anything from the above except for RIS, since it may come with new meshes for glaciers and icicles.
ELFX: Install and overwrite everything, then put in the SMIM patch and overwrite again.

Did I get that right?

What sucks in my situation is that I really don't think I have anything that should conflict with ELFX and cause my flickering, even if I got the order wrong. The trickiest part of this is when mods mess around with stuff they really shouldn't mess around with and don't tell you, nor is it obvious from the name/primary function. For example, the SNOW mod is supposed to just deal with the snow winds, but throws in snowflakes for no real reason. That one's a bad example since the author actually tells you, but far from all mods are that informative...

Well, as a bit of an exercise for myself, let me give this a shot...

Did I get that right?

I have no idea actually, I haven't checked into ALL of the mods yet, but...

1. Skyrim HD 2K (I meant this one, overwrites vanilla)
2. Terrain Bump (overwrite #1)
3. Better Dynamic Snow (overwrites vanilla)
4. Quality Snow HD (overwrite #1)
5. RIS - Real Ice and Snow (overwrite #1 and #2, do NOT overwrite #4)

Now when I have added the do's and don'ts to each mod we see that I can install RIS before QSHD and then it becomes.

1. Skyrim HD 2K (I meant this one, overwrites vanilla)
2. Terrain Bump (overwrite #1)
3. Better Dynamic Snow (overwrites vanilla)
4. RIS - Real Ice and Snow (overwrite #1 and #2)
5. Quality Snow HD (overwrite #1 and #4)

And I have not started with adding SMIM or ELFX yet, and when I do, oh boy. Then we get the following JUST for getting along with BDS.

1) If you want Ruins Clutter Improved, install it first.
2) Install Better Dynamic Snow - if it asks you to overwrite shrinebase.nif from RCI, choose "yes" (as recommended by RCI author).
3) If you want, install SMIM. Let SMIM overwrite any meshes from BDS. SMIM may also ask you to overwrite a lantern mesh from RCI, so choose "yes" if you want the pretty new lantern mesh.
4) If you want, install ELFX. Let it overwrite all meshes from BDS (and SMIM if you're using it).
5) If you're using SMIM, make sure you download the SMIM-compatible meshes from the ELFX page and install those last - let them overwrite everything. It's also a good idea to keep an eye on the version numbers of ELFX and SMIM to make sure ELFX's SMIM meshes are up-to-date.
6) Make sure you activate any related plugins!

Ops, forgot Ruin Clutter Improved, I have that one to install also.
I LOVE Mod Organizer just because of this, I can just install everything in their own folders first, then slowly see one by one who should WIN and then expand it until I'm done a week later (maybe) ;p

To be honest, it is things/stuff like this that makes me not installing a few mods that actually looks interesting or just LOOKS GOOD, I don't want to have to think about this.

Sadly what mod should overwrite another is not always a finite answer it can also depend on preference, so Mod Managers can't handle these things automatically =( =(

Yeah I have found out that more then a few mods mess with lights even though they do not specify they do. Turn every mod off and ONLY have ELFX on if it do not flicker, turn one more on and so on. *haha*

Ugh, I'm stuck with such an annoying issue... Imaginator's MCM has a problem where it will appear and disappear as it pleases and not even the SkyUI console command to force a menu refresh will bring it back, and I set up a half-assed saturation/contrast scheme for CoT before I decided to bail on that mod and now I'm stuck with a menu that won't come back and a overall visual style highly reminiscent of rainbow vomit. Can't find word one of how to manually revert the changes on Google either. I guess I'm playing a stupidly overmodded high-res game that sets my GPU on fire while still looking shit until the menu decides to come back... :(

I've been googling and it seems like the final answer is that the engine has a max number of light sources and when you hit it, it'll try to intelligently turn off lights not in your field of vision, but because this is Bethesda it turns off lights right in my face. Since I have ETaC and Lanterns of Skyrim, I probably have too many light sources pretty much everywhere and so flickering is what I'm stuck with. Hmm, I should probably go to a dungeon and see what happens.

On a more positive note, I just overtook my first imperial fort with Deadly Combat installed. That was intense! I love the trade-off in being able to take out most of them in one arrow, but they could take me out in just 2-3 arrows too. Very nicely balanced in that it made me have to make sure every shot counted and kill people as fast as I could, while not making it overwhelming and unfair. I admit, I wasn't used to it and had to save scum in a safe corner halfway through it because the dozen or so archers were just destroying me. Now to find my first dragon with Deadly Dragons on...

I'm getting absolutely awful microstuttering in a few Dwemer ruins - Alftand and Irkngthand, specifically. The game is borderline unplayable in these areas even with ENB disabled. What the hell causes these giant framerate drops? I average 100+ FPS without ENB and suddenly it's chugging below 20 or even 10. Is this a known issue and what's the best way to save FPS in these areas?

I think my new favorite mod is Interesting NPCs, now that I've spent a good part of the weekend just exploring and talking to them. They're hilarious! But in a lore-friendly, immersive way. My favorites so far are the khajiit junkie in Rorikstead (her "YOU HAVE SKOOMA?!" made me crack up) and my new waifu is Zora Fair-Child. I love her psychotic self and the voice actress is fantastic, I normally hate followers but I signed Zora up without a second thought and love having her with me.

I'm obviously not the expert here but since you're not getting many replies... How are you getting 100+ fps? This game is the kind that's supposed to be locked to 60fps or else it starts breaking, as far as I've heard... I'd start by deactivating whatever you have that unlocks the framerate and see how it acts at 60.

I'm closing in on what mods I'm going to use when playing through (FINALLY!).
However I have one small issue to fix still...

I have a white flickering at the Head/body (neck-seem) when fire/light sources are close, almost as if there is a microscopic distance between the head and body that only light makes visible. So if anyone know how to fix it or just know about some choker/jewelry add-ons that can cover that specific area (normal necklaces don't cover the area so still white flickering), that would be awesome.

I can't be specific since I don't have the issue, but in my mod searching I've found that neck seams are very serious business for the porn modders because their sweat skin textures don't look good in screenshots with a neck seam, so if you poke around you'll probably find 150 mods for it. This might end up in your first visit to Loverslab, enjoy!

There are also multiple scarf mods.

Which specs and graphic mods you are using? But you are probably running out of VRAM, check with MSI afterburner how much VRAM Skyrim is using.

I want to actually play it, I modded it and play it on and off - but the thing that happens is:

1) I get bored and stop for months
2) come back AND forgot which profile I was using in MO

So is there a must have small list of mods (besides skyui)?

I am basically tired of coming back to trying to figure out what I was doing. List doesn't need to be small but not some major game changing stuff.

What I do not mind is perk adding/changing. I had some mod that did this but it also changed combat and such. Think it was redone..any way to just get perk changes?

Well considering the toxic environment that Skyrim modding community are, you kinda have to visit multiple sites, so yes I've been there, in fact most of my UNPB adaptations for armors come from there, even some main armor mods too, since they've been removed from nexus due to modder getting a ban or leaving voluntary (rage quit).

I think I'll go for collars/chokers though, and I've found that Deserter X / nsk13 @ nexus have plenty of armors that includes collars/chokers, I'll go through those.

Can't seems to find a solid answer, any idea how to fix my inability to go back to the game after alt+tabbing once I have an ENB installed ( here TK enb ) ?

That's the thing with Skyrim modding: there's no such thing. Personally, I can never again play the game without A Quality World Map w/ Roads and that's my #1 must-have-at-all-times mod. You might not agree and might find Frostfall or Skyrim Redone to be the best mods ever.

ENB (for ENBoost), SKSE (+memory allocation fix) and SkyUI are the absolute mandatories, but everything else is down to taste and what hardware you have.

There are "forceborderlesswindow" type options in your enblocal.ini. Set those to "true" and you should be able to alt-tab.

Thanks it did put me in the right direction, I had ForceBorderless=true but ForceBorderlessFullscreen was set on false, no alt-tab was such a pain in the *** since I always forget the console commands.

I installed this underrated mod, Face to face conversation, and now I feel stupid for not doing it sooner. I put all that work into retexturing every aspect of NPCs and I wasn't even truly seeing it! Now I can count the hairs in their beards and wrinkles in their faces.

Also both happy and a little annoyed that I solved two long-standing issues and the root cause was the actual engine, not my tweaking or hardware or anything. First I had stutters, often if not all the time, and the problem there was the internal vsync. Disabled it and enabled nvidia's fps limiter and my stutters went down by about 75%. Second I had that white outline glow you sometimes get with various AA solutions, but turns out it was Bethesda's default shadow settings causing it. Spent hours trying to tweak my AA to get rid of it and all I had to do was set iMultiSample to 0. Damn it, Bethesda...

I'm snowed in, so I might try to re-mod Skyrim again today. I just disable them all in Nexus and reinstall the game from Steam, right? Is there anything special I have to do to not srew up SKSE?

I think the problem with the original mods I picked for Skyrim was that I went too far away from vanilla, and I went a little overboard in terms of taxing mods. I LOVE the vanilla looks for these games, so I think I'm just going to find the best texture mods that are basically just upresed vanilla textures, and maybe some gameplay and lighting mods. What would you guys recommend for the best vanilla visuals while keeping preformance at 1080p and 60FPS on a GTX760 2GB and a 3570k@3.4ghz?

I might look at ENBs too, but it seems that every one I find seems to deviate too far away from vanilla. It's either too saturated or too dark, and I just don't like the look of them.

Oh, and should I switch from Nexus to the new Mod Organizer? Is it any more difficult to use than Nexus?

If I just want a better looking base game which mods should I be on the lookout for? And maybe just a few minor UI tweaks, no added content outside of the base.

Quick question on Mod Organizer; I'm going to install it today, but do I still download mods to Nexus, or do I manually download them? And I'm not clear on how it works with the script extender.

Yeah it downloads straight from Nexus.

I installed SKSE into Skryim folder since it's doesn't go into data folder, don't know if that's how you do it but it works for me.

Ok, that's what I figured. But will mods I download to the NMM be managebale in the Mod Organizer? Or do I have to download them manually into a special directory for MO?

And yeah, that is how I did it. It's been a while, but I forgot. I actually have to do a full reinstall before I start again, so I'll have to move it around anyways.

Not sure but you should just be able to click on the "Download With Manager" and it'll automatically add itself. I think there's a tutorial when you first open MO that explains it.
If you're downloading manually it works the same way as NMM, click on "add mods" and find the .rar or .zip

Even though you have gotten some answers

I started by watching Gophers videos on Youtube, and learned from that.

Mod Organizer #1 - Installation and Initial Setup
Mod Organizer #2 - Installing Basic Mods
Mod Organizer #3 - Updating and Merging Mods
Mod Organizer #4 - Installing Scripted FOMODs, SKSE and SkyUI

Oh thanks! I should've known Gopher would have something on it.

One thing though, he says in one of the vids that it's an advanced tool. I've only modded Skyrim once, and I used NMM. Should I have any issues with this?

I used to use NMM, and recently switched over to MO (like 3 weeks ago) and those four videos was ALL knowledge I had of Mod Organizer when I started using it, and I'm not having any difficulties adding/removing/merging mods and so on and so forth.

And yes it CAN be a very advanced tool if you like, I haven't gone that deep into it yet though.

My game is set up to be almost the best the game can possibly look with retextures for everything that people have bothered creating textures for. I can cut and paste my textures list when I get home if you want the full list, but I've gone hardcore with it. I have retextures for hay and woven baskets! Bottles, plates, sacks, chests, furniture, the works.

If you just want the big packs, that's easy:

- Skyrim 2K HD
- aMibidianBorn Book of Silence (weapons and armor)
- Static Mesh Improvement Mod

If I just want a better looking base game which mods should I be on the lookout for? And maybe just a few minor UI tweaks, no added content outside of the base.
To each their own, but are you really sure you don't want any gameplay tweaks? The game can be so much better than it is. The vanilla skill trees are garbage, vanilla smithing makes no sense, vanilla magic is way underpowered, etc. My game is better in every way now and much more compelling and fun.

If nothing else, at least look into Deadly Dragons and Deadly Combat for combat that isn't boring and way too easy once you get past like level 30. Both are fairly easy to install and safe.

I think I'll start a new playthrough this weekend. I'll role a pure destruction-less mage (no armor, no weapons besides staffs, no fireballs). I'll start as a male breton and focus on conjuration and illusion. I also won't start the main quest for a while so no dragons.

Does anyone know a good magic rebalance mod that would make this playthrough better?

WTF is this? I tried installing Imaginator and now it's crashing in the main menu and before I can even load a game.

Hey guys, I just reinstalled Skyrim and am making my first foray into mods. I'm trying to figure out how to get the abs that you can see in the following photo from the Immersive Armors mod page:

Does that body come with the Immersive Armors mod? Or would I need to download another mod to get this? I have never used Skyrim mods before so any help would be appreciated. :)

That would be a body mod like Battle Hardened Body Mod Vanilla UNP UNPB UNPC CBBE ADEC
But there's quite a few to choose from. Not all are compatible with armour mods so choose wisely.
Also looking through this thread makes me want to get back into Skyrim. A clean install and starting from scratch perhaps?

I was gonna say it's the fitness body mod but yours is also possible

If you are going to start from scratch , might i suggest trying out Mod organizer ?

Once you do , you'll never want to use NMM again .

If you want to know more info i can direct you to Gophers Tutorial vids .

Yup, Mod Organizer takes a bit of getting used to, but it's far better for long term stability than Nexus Mod Manager. No overwriting, separate profiles, ability to change mod order (not load order), etc.

Having taken a bit of a hiatus from the game for a while, I spent the past two weeks getting back into the game by revisiting my most recent modlist and deciding to pare back a few items in order to minimize script load.

I was already well aware of SSME/the SKSE extension that lets you increase memory block size in the game, as well as things like Cell Stabilizer, but I was always crashing with my old build. The times were extremely variable and typically had nothing to do with VRAM - Skyrim Performance Monitor always reported that I was coasting under my limit - and led to some frustrated sessions of restarting. I saved often, but it's still disheartening to play the game in such a state, even if all of your favorite mods are in it, because you always operate under the fear that the game will crash.

So, with that in mind, I decided to take out two big mods and one mod that I have always loved but I don't really need or use to their fullest potential: 1) Footsteps, 2) Enhanced Blood Textures, and 3) Convenient Horses.

The effect was astounding. I regained quite a bit of FPS running outside in the overworld - hauling up from 45 to 60 fps - and, this was the best part, I basically never crashed. There are still the odd moments here and there where things will go wonky; I might crash after a battle for example, or while dropping an item (the typical stuff that you expect to go wrong with Vanilla), but otherwise, I was able to smoothly get through multi-hour sessions with zero crashes multiple times.

That being said, I miss Convenient Horses and the ability to summon my mount, and battle aftermath isn't as interesting without EBT. The trade-off? I was able to plug in Verdant, and wow - this game is beautiful at times.

I continuously learn more and more about "less is more" when it comes to this game, but it's a lesson I frequently come to appreciate again and again.

Unless you are running the Skyrim revisited mod guide + Explorers mod guide + perma mod guide all on the STEP site :p.

200+ plugins running stable .

Thanks. I ended up using Fitness Body, which is pretty cool in that you can select what parts of a "fit body" you want and you can blend them into your existing body model. I opted for just the abs, which looks nice.

So I spent pretty much my entire day installing and customizing mods (I got a little carried away haha) and now I have 83 mods installed and everything basically running the way I want it. Installing the ENB was the toughest part as it took some fiddling with .ini files to figure out why I kept crashing before the main menu would even load.

However there is just one last thing that I can't figure out, and I'm hoping someone here can help me. I have these weird floating boxes all around the world that are bugging me:

I have no clue what is causing this. When I run closer to them trees pop up in their place, but from a distance they're just random floating boxes. Does anyone know what might be causing this?

Figured it out, it was Realistic Aspen Trees. Uninstalled that mod and no more floating boxes. Yay!

Edit: Actually, turns out I wasn't using the latest version of the Flora Overhaul mod so there were compatibility issues between the mods. D'oh! Now I have the Realistic Aspen mod working fine.

I think my Skyrim is almost done... I can't quite get AA I'm happy with, but that seems to just be the engine again as nothing I try will provide a 100% satisfactory result. If nothing else, stuff like the market at the end of the "long" road in Whiterun will be aliased to hell while the houses close to me will be smooth and nice. I've kinda given up on it after trying every single Nvidia and SweetFX setting.

Some screenshots showing my current state!

I cannot believe that I didn't crash when taking that screenshot of Markarth... BTW, that's not a free-cam shot, my character is actually that high up. You guys should check out the criminally underrated SKY CITY mod!

Damn, I've been getting more CTDs lately and it really seems to be Footprints causing it. It's always in the Papyrus log whenever I crash, and last night I saw a follower teleport in front of me after fast travel and right when her feet were to hit the ground, CTD. I love Footprints but I might have to sacrifice it...

Worst part is I'm assuming it's a mod conflict since something I've added recently has been causing way more crashes and I've been running Footprints for like 150 hours without major issues, but I have no idea how to figure out what that conflict is aside from painful trial and error. I guess I could uninstall the more adoptable children mod and see if that's it, but I'm not sacrificing Legacy of the Dragonborn. That house is too much fun.

(I feel like you can very likely throw EBT back on if you miss the carnage. It's just a texture, isn't it?)

Missing dat ENB touch. ;p Looks lovely though.

What mods are you using? Looks pretty good!

My system can't handle an ENB, so I'm running something similar to you. Been a while since I played, though.
