The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Mod Discussion and News [Creation Kit released]

You may be fucked. Breezehome overhaul is notoriously difficult to uninstall as it adds new scripts through all of whiterun. Even in game, there's a lengthy process for preparing the actual space for uninstallation.

Do you have any saves from before your attempts to uninstall?

Alternatively, you may want to use the console commands to kill and respawn Lydia, that may solve the issue of her being invisible.

Absolutely have saves from before, around 60 of them ;p

Killing Lydia and resurrect dint help. So either keeping Breezehome Overhaul or restarting from 0, but started noticing other bugs problems as I went through the game now, so will probably wipe and restart.

Use the save tool, it can delete scripts and mods from save files.

Tried removing scripts and mods from save but she (Lydia is still gone/not working)

Doesn't look better then to document what I have done, have in terms of gear etc and so on, and start from a clean Skyrim install and start from the beginning of the game again.

You can always install Legacy of the Dragonborn so you can remember the story of the amazing disappearing Lydia

Ugh worse thing about modding. When one goes rogue and there's no way to fix it. Had that happen a few times, now after 350+ mods installed I try to be very selective of what I install.

Yeah, decided to wipe my Skyrim save and game folder, will start from zero again.

58 mods to research what install order to do, and I am finding more small mods at STEP wiki that I might add this time around on top of that. ;p

You ARE using LOOT right?

You ARE using LOOT right?

Install order (so not to break any previously installed mods), not load order.

But yes I'm using a load order rearranger previously BOSS, have not tried LOOT yet (more then check that it gives a totally different load order compared to BOSS)

LOOT is the successor to BOSS so you definitely should Throw BOSS out the window and use LOOT.

How much easier is it to mod compared to last year? A year ago I spent hours trying to setup S.T.E.P and then all of the additional mods I wanted to use, with the end result being a crashing game.

Been doing this for the last couple days. Everything is running perfect now with just STEP, until I get near a lake and then crash. I can literally run all over the world with tcl and speedmult at 1000 and everything is groovy, but get in the vicinity of either of the two lakes and ctd. Never had a problem modding Skyrim in the past, and I mean 100+ mods, but can't for the life of me get a handle on this now and I haven't even installed the mods I really want like perkus maximus and obis or interesting NPCs.

There is Mod organizer which is a new Manager for mods .

The great things about it amongst others is :

No more bloated Skyrim Directory ( in fact your Directory won't get touched at all )
All mods are organized into their own folder so they no longer overwrite each other anymore and makes Managing your Mods much less of a nightmare .

While the learning curve is a bit steeper then simply using NMM it is still very easy .

If interested , give Gophers tutorial vids a look , they are awesome .

Sounds to me that with MO you never have to think about overwriting anything at anytime anywhere, just place stuff in the correct LOAD order and it will work.
No more do I install this and allow it to overwrite the previous mod or not, just install in a folder of its own and place below the one you update and it will work.

Now ofc, you actually might want to merge a mainfile with its update so to just have 1 mod for it instead of 1 main and x number of updates, but that's another thing. ;P

Absolutely going to try MO out.

You can totally do that with MO !

I want to do a fresh install of Skyrim, since I kind of messed up with mods (too many texture packs, I'm going to stick with 1 this time, the less VRAM intensive mods and maybe an ENB). Do I need to uninstall all the mods with Nexus Mod Manager, or just uninstall/reinstall the game with Steam?

And what mods would you guys reccomend for me? I have a 2GB 760 and a i5-3570k at 3.4ghz. I actually like the vanilla look of the game. So I basically just want a fairly complete, higher res texture pack that my 2GB of VRAM can handle easily, a tree mod for more variation/density (I have one in mind), and maybe ones that will improve draw distance and the like. Basically, I just want to turn it into a better looking vanilla version.

Uninstall mods and then reinstall the game.
You should use Mod Organiser though, makes reinstalling much easier since mods don't get installed into the Skyrim folder.

Essential mods for me are the really popular texture pack and SMIM.
If you're a fan of the vanilla look you might wanna consider getting Imaginator instead of an ENB.
As far as grass mods go I used to use the Dense Grass mod that was packed with the Docter's ENB but I've since switched to Verdant. Prior to getting a new PC I used Grass on Steroids which had little impact on FPS.
As far as draw distance goes I'm still trying to find one that I like, other than maybe getting the stable uGrids and bumping it up I can't help you there.

Keeping the vanilla look of any TES game with texture packs is a real challenge. The texture pack closest to the original vision that I found is Vivid Landscapes, but even that one has problems. This for instance:

screenshot2jou3m.png

The normal map on the wall texture is way too noisy and pronounced, cluttering up the environment making it harder to focus. This is one of the most common problems with mod textures. Even if they might technically be higher quality from a fidelity standpoint, that doesn't mean they will be artistically and functionally as good as the originals.

And here is another typical problem I have with grass mods:

This is the grass around the Falkreath area and it really sticks out like a sore thumb. It's a shame since the grass for the other areas fit so well. I think this is Verdant Grass. Probably doesn't help that the lightning generally just doesn't interact well with the grass meshes.

It has already been said many times, but Mod Organizer is just awesome !

Some things are a bit more complicated to install than others, and you have to keep track yourself of files oberwritten which can be a little too much for some, but otherwise it solved many problems I had in the past with other mod managers.

I have been in the process of reinstalling Skyrim and creating a mod setup with Mod Organizer the past few days. Running Epic Gameplay Overhaul along with Perkus Maximus and my game hasn't exploded yet which feels like an amazing achievement.

So...

Anyway to use texture patch ONLY for your main character, besides custom races?
I have tried using Ningheim race, but I cannot get it to play nice with FNIS, and I do not really like it anyways with the texture I'm going to use.

Custom races will be your only way of doing that.

I've never bothered until recently but I became annoyed with animations and wanted to use FNIS PC exclusive animation path. which requires a custom race.

So I downloaded Custom Races (don't forget the custom races compatibility patches )

Works like a charm, it picks all the hairs/beards/brows modifications in the same pool as every other character so that NPC also benefit from it, but as far as body shape/textures/normal maps go you can have your own.
You have to copy them manually in the right folders though, so you need some basic understanding of the files needed.

I even have it working alongside Better Vampires, and Dynamic Vampire appearence after a bit of trouble.

Was afraid of that, haha.

Well, trying to get vampire eyes to trigger when I turn is where I'm at right now with this mod, so far it doesn't change.
Wished there were a textures/location name list accompanying the mod.

Do you guys have any recommended mods for new quests and dungeons? What I am really looking for are new dungeons with a new theme, and not the old nordic ruins with draugrs everywhere. I presume the Moonpath to Elsewyr mod fits this criteria, just checking if you guys have any other recommendation.

I'm having trouble with the Natural Lighting and Atmospheric ENB

1. It doesn't seem to be enabled. Looks just like vanilla, although I'm around Winterhold during a blizzard. I have linked all related config files below.
Update: Forgot to run enbinjector.exe. Now I get the ENB enabled message in the menu, but in game it says "bFloatPointRenderTarget isn't set to 1 in SkyrimPrefs or other copies." It's set to 1 in the copy in Documents/MyGames/Skyrim. Where's any other copies? There's a default one in common/Skyrim/Skyrim but that has default values and doesn't even have a bFloatPointRenderTarget option. Is that the one it's talking about?
2. The game is running windowed even though I have bfull screen=1 in SkyrimPrefs (should there be a space?), deleted -windowed in the Steam Properties box (forgot it was for debugging), unchecked OneTweak (which has a BW option) in Mod Organizer, and the windowed options in ENBLocal are both false. How many friggin ways are there to change the window settings?!
3. I CTD'd by quicksaving somewhere west of Winterhold. Literally 30 seconds after a safe quicksave. FYI I'm pretty pleased with the stability of my latest installation, and boy were the last few problematic. I've played for over 10 hours in the past 2 days and only had 2 CTDs - one while travelling to some Dwemer fortress and the second while exploring north of Winterhold (why is the Winterhold area having issues?)

It seems the latest ENB release has significantly upgraded support for parallax textures on landscapes, and there are new textures coming out slowly now taking full advantage of this. I couldn't tell you what it looks like since I don't use any ENB.

Awseome, thanks so much for the help!

One question though; are there any advantages to Mod Organizer over Nexus, besides it not installing mods to the Skyrim folder?

So is Imaginator easier to set up than ENB? Where can I find fan presets? And I still need to force fullscreen.
I wouldn't recommend using Imaginator. Nothing really compares to ENB but if you can't get it to work but still want altered visuals try SweetFX. Are you using the wrapper for ENB or injector?

Wow I gave it a try yesterday and.. wow what an awesome tool. Still need to llok why the ENB didn't seems to work with it thought.
I still don't really like playing skyrim and will most likely never finish it, but I sure love spending a few hour on it every few month just to try a bunch of new mod, take pictures and all that. It's also my personnal benchmark everytime I upgrade my computer.
Need to reinstale VorpX to give it a new try with the Oculus rift.

Did you put the enb Files in the Skyrim directory ?

Enb and SKSE files are the only thing that still need to be placed in the directory to work .

Just be sure to Launch SKSE through MO.

It's RealVision, since it had an installer you have to launch I thought it would be enough. But I must be missing something, I should look at the tutorials. vedit : just looked at it, and yeah I missed many step. Guess MO isn't really of much use when it comes to ENB.

I don't understand that last sentence at all. I don't even understand the difference between SweetFX and ENB.
When you install ENB there are two folders, one called "WrapperVersion" and one "InjectorVersion". If one isn't working it's worth trying the other.

ENB and SweetFX are similar in that they intercept/override DirectX to alter visuals, as opposed to something like Imaginator which uses scripts in Skyrim/your save file. Apart from anti-aliasing, everything SweetFX does could be described as photoshop for your screen. ENB on the other hand has shaders specifically written for the game and interacts with the game on a much deeper level. Thus ENB has by far the biggest impact on game visuals, adding effects like ambient occlusion, parallax, reflections, depth of field etc...

I tried both and I still get the bFloatPointRenderTarget error. It's set to 1 in the copy in Documents/My Games/Skyrim. On the bright side, I solved the borderless fullscreen issue.

Documents/My Games/Skyrim is NOT the place Mod Organizer uses for the 2 ini files.
Click the puzzle icon (red+grey puzzle pieces), and pick ini editor from within the software, and you will edit the correct files.

In my own case they will be in -> C:\Program Files (x86)\Mod Organizer\profiles\Default\*.ini

Do mods work fine on laptops? I'm waiting for my new laptop to arrive, and I'm wondering if it's good enough for a modded Skyrim? Good enough for ENB?

- 2,5 GHz Intel i7 4710HQ
- NVIDIA GeForce GTX970M 3GB

I'm relatively new to PC gaming, and have never even tried modding a game before. Can someone link me to a tutorial for beginners?

I'm just looking for mods to make the game look better, really. As beautiful and close to photo realistic as possible. Any tips for ENB's or mods?

Hey SkyrimGAF! I just recently installed and started modding Skyrim and I've been having what's probably the predictable three-phase experience of first trying out vanilla and liking it, deciding to put on maybe 30+ mods, liking it even more and then deciding to go HAM with about 350 different modifications. It's been a learning process but I have a mostly stable game that looks amazing now. Some of the mods come together to form some of the best effects I've ever seen in a game, like how Natural Rain + Supreme Storms create damn near real rain. I've got a few nagging questions, though... Actually, I have dozens but I'll start with three:

- I've got this annoying issue with light intensity lowering and raising as I move through a location. It's clearly something to do with the lights in relation to my character as I can take one step back and forth and see lights flicker on and off perfectly in sync with my movement. Being flamed by a dragon completely blinds me for a few seconds too. What is this and how do I get rid of it? Like with weather, I've gone through all the lighting mods and settled on ELFX. None of them got rid of this annoyance. Help?

- Can I get an informed opinion on weather mods with arguments? I've gone through CoT, Pure, RCRN and URWL and I feel like they all do kind of nothing... Some very minor variance in the outdoor lighting during various conditions. I know I don't like CoT since it tries to do 800 different things it should leave well enough alone and just focus on weather, but what about the other ones?

- How do I properly figure out CTD issues? I know about LOOT and load orders, TES5edit and dirty edits, the memory allocation fix, ENBoost and the usual stuff. What I don't know is how to properly read Papyrus logs and figure out where to go from there. I do know that almost every time I get a crash, there's stuff by skyBirds and Wearable Lanterns at the bottom of papyrus.0.log. Is that a strong hint that they're culprits or is it just as likely that something else is making these mods crash without showing up in the log?
