PS2 Appreciation & Celebration Thread, long live the King!

the 70000 models can run homebrew, 90000 models cannot. The 90000 models also have a different BIOS (hence the lack of homebrew) and hardware layout. If you don't plan on using homebrew, the 90000 is probably the better machine, but I'd just go with whichever you can find cheap.

first thx for your answer and sorry if I did notice it just now.

I'm not interested in homebrew on PS2 (already have Vita for this ;) ), I just want play PS1 and PS2 games (I will use Framemeister Mini) and 90000 has internal power supply, which is an important feature for me, that's the reason I was focusing on that model even if it's almost 2x the price of other models.

Anybody else played or have any info at all on Gekisha Boy 2? I'm still not too sure how stages are unlocked, but I've played through most stages and figured out a lot of shit. I'd love to do a video on this series someday but I don't feel comfortable talking about a game I don't fully understand. Been trying to research it and I can't find anything at all.

I should probably check niconico for videos...

PSA: Xenosaga III seems to have dropped in price recently. If you're interested in the game, you might want to look into picking it up soon.

Ahhh... pre-7th gen gaming. It was heaven.

That was the last great generation of gaming as far as I'm concerned. No worries about day 1 patches and DLC. The internet and social media hadn't take over pop culture yet. It was still about couch co-op. Smaller companies could actually make a profit. Games didn't need to sell 4 million copies to break even. There was a far greater selection of sports games. The music genre started and was cool for a while.

The only downside was that memory cards were a pain in the butt if you had siblings and one went to a friend's house.

What's the best capturing device for recording PS2 games? Some devices don't seem to support it and the ones that do, hardly mention the functionality/compatibility.

i LOVE my PS2 library, shame that the system looks like crap on modern LCDs when i really can't be arsed to use my CRT in the attic every time i want to play a PS2 game :(

Today I got an used SLIM SCPH-77004 PS2 from a family member. (I sold mine together with most games back in 2007 in order to get a PS3*;
I still regret it to this day
). I would like to know how good the homebrew scene is for this majestic console, and what would I need in order to install it (if allowed to be discussed of course).

Also my few remaining games:
Final Fantasy XII (disc-less wtf? :( )
Onimusha Warlords
Pro Evolution Soccer 4
Ratchet and Clank 1
Tekken Tag Tournament (PAL bleh)

Also I have an old ass Philips CRT but it only displays NTSC in black and white, any way to "fix" this ( I don't understand squat about signals ) or do I need to get a new one altogether?

Thanks in advance

Pawn shop for $16. I admit, the $2 per game price tag made me a bit impulsive.

Since this is the general PS2 thread, I thought I might consult you guys.

I'm thinking of divesting my PS2 (OG with backwards compatibility). I'd like to do this as a lot.

Games, mostly disc-only, include:

Klonoa 2
Katamari Damacy
We Love Katamari
Ico
Tak 2
Several Spyro games for PSX + PS2
Viewtiful Joe + VJ2
Mojo
Finny the Fish
Sphinx
Mad Maestro
Haven
Tak 2
Raw Danger
Rayman PSX

Is this a lot people are going to have much interest in? Just not sure if I really care about keeping this stuff. What kind of price should I be offering for the whole thing? Thanks for your time!

I found my PS2 component cables cleaning up. I'm so happy.

Now I can have the best connection for my retro setup.

They're also getting pricey now weirdly. At least for the official ones.

Considering the cheap unofficial one I had literally exploded into bits when I took it out the back of my TV a few weeks back, I can see another good reason to get an official one. :P

The difference between first party cables and knock off cables are night and day. Probably why.

Didn't know that. Interesting.

I know the official PS3 component cables also work with the PS2 and vice versa. Those looked nicer I remember, but those are also pricey as well now.

So what's the current accepted non-disc swap region free method for PS2? which chip? who sells consoles preinstalled? etc.
**
Also need PS1 region free if that matters.

Question, i have a phat ps2 from about 2002 that i just dragged out of the closet. It runs fine but I want to keep it working for a long while. If I rip my games to a HDD and use a loader without using the laser it should last a long while shouldn't it?

Or does running the games from the HDD wear the console down too?

And can I run pal games from my us ps2. I have a good chance of living in Europe in a few months and want to know if I can bring that over and collect more.

THE KING BABY!

Just dug this sucker out to play SMT Nocturne....god damn what a great unit. Especially the SCH90001 series, no power brick and dead silent. Only issue is that it doesn't read cheat disks like gameshark or codebreaker :(

This is entirely false in my experience. The official cables actually broke on me quicker than third party ones.

There's a lot of stuff that can fail in a PS2. The laser is the most likely.

Yes, using OPL will allow you to run games from other regions.

I went to Wal-Mart yesterday and found the GTA:LCS & VCS bundle for $10. I had the PSP versions, but from the little I played of LCS yesterday, it's nice playing with a PS2 controller.

I'm trying to be careful when buying 3rd party brands. I bought Monoprice's 4-in-1 Component Cable (for PS2/3, Wii, Xbox360) just to save money, but the cable did not work for my silver PS2 slim console (SCPH-77001). However, it worked for the Wii console. Now I'm considering buying the expensive 1st party cable, which is ridiculous. :|

I've heard of Free McBoot, that I can put on my memory card and it will boot straight to the HDD?

What is OPL and how does that work?

I'm still really worried about my PS2 breaking down even if I'm not using the drive. I want this thing to last forever. Are there any moving parts besides the disc drive?

You may have just gotten a bad cable. I've bought three of those things and all of them worked perfectly.

That's a surprisingly decent game, given that quidditch itself is kind of broken as a sport. They did a good job adapting it.

it was a fun game, but the gameplay itself was extremely limited considered the content and conditions of this fictional sport.

that's why I think a new gen version of the game, a sequel, could really bring it back. gotta bump that thread one of these days.

Easiest way is using an emulator and loading JP discs through that. That's how I play Innocent Sin. (And patched it, too.)

Still the only JP PS1 game I own, come to think of it.

which has the side effect of potential emulation issues, lack of original hardware, etc. etc. Otherwise I'd just do that.

Remember Samurai Legend Musashi?

I didn't think the game was completely terrible, but Brave Fencer still remains one of my favourite games ever, so this thing as a long awaited follow up was very disappointing.
