Besiege - Physics based vehicle construction goes medieval

So I finally started playing this, and man, what a great first impression! From the stylish menu design alone, you can see the polish that's gone into Besiege. Building vehicles is effortless and easy, although building something that's effective and doesn't splinter apart when you move and attack isn't quite so easy. The little details stand out: wood beams snap in half when broken, blood stains your blades and the ground, your structure collapses and falls apart realistically when aflame, buildings crumble under the might of your cannon fire or swinging maces. While the current challenges are not exactly that difficult to complete objective-wise, building something that can steer effectively, withstand damage, and fire cannons without breaking apart from the recoil can be tough. Experimenting with different designs and new ways to combine pieces is fun and as the GIFs on the past two pages show, the variety of builds you can create is vast.

Can't wait to see how the game grows expand, because for a 0.01 alpha, Besiege is already a polished and well-designed experience

It's being made by just two people as well. Some seriously talented chaps.
Seriously. I absolutely love the menu design

Never heard of this, but it seems like genuine fun. And i'm really liking the art direction with the grayish limbo and the cartoony approach.

Was having trouble building something that could turn effectively, found a really good method online

Try tank controls: Left wheels on numpad 1/4, right wheels on numpad 2/5. Push both ahead for forward, opposites to turn quickly, one side only for minor adjustments, etc. It takes some getting used to, but it's powerful and efficient. Also max out the wheel speed for fun zooming around.

You can save and share your vehicles with others. Here are steps from the game's forums
- Your saves are stored in the following directory: [Besiege Main Directory]Besiege_DataSavedMachines
- The game creates thumbnails for your machines they are stored here: [Besiege Main Directory]Besiege_DataSavedMachinesThumbnails

- To use other people's machines simply download the file and save it into: [Besiege Main Directory]Besiege_DataSavedMachines

Besiege is releasing on Steam Early Access today
http://store.steampowered.com/app/346010/

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?
“We aren't entirely sure how long it will take to release the game in its finished form. A rough and cautious estimate would be 1.5 - 2 years from now until version 1.0. We don't want to say any earlier than that!”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?
“The full version will contain many more levels, in the form of islands to conquer. These islands will have different aesthetics and will feature objective types not found in the current Alpha, hopefully encouraging different tactics! If all goes to plan, the final game should boast more variety. As well as this, there will be more building pieces to utilise, potentially a level editor, and more expansive creation and sandbox options. The final game will also hopefully be significantly more polished than what it is currently!”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?
“The Early Access version contains 15 levels, comprising the kingdom of Ipsilon. There is a sand-box level to test creations and in any given level you can disable all limitations, allowing for experimentation. There is also a time-dilation dial, allowing the game to be viewed in slowmotion, or at 2X the normal speed. There is also a broad suite of building tools and pieces, including flying pieces, flamethrowers, cannons, contractible springs, axels, detachable joints, explosives and much more. You can also save and load machines in any given level.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?
“We are going to scale the price with the amount of content available. So as more features, game modes and levels are added we will add to the cost incrementally. We hope that players will feel they paid the appropriate price for the amount of content available at any given stage of the games development.”

Insta bought before sleep yesterday. Was just waiting on Steam.

After this got onto my radar - Cubed's video, youtube videos, Lirik's stream(ameno), I just couldn't resist the charm of this game.

Good luck to both of the guys making this!

Bought that game thanks to the amazing gifs. My attempts look a lot less like that, but it's fun so far. I just have trouble building something that can drive. Driving forwards usually works, but when I tried to build in a steering thing, but it breaks very fast and I can't drive effectively. My most efficient method so far was building a dancer, that is a core with bumbers and saws. And that method of travel is really terrible and useless against buildings high up.

Anyone know if buying it from the site still gets a steam key? I can't see any mention of them still being included, just that if you bought it before it was released on Steam you'll get one.

These two methods work well.

Map the movement of the left inner wheels to Right - Left, and the right inner wheels to Left - Right.

For turning, I've been using this boggie to good effect:

Any GAF impressions yet? Seems like a few people decided to check this out yesterday

I've literally only played it for half an hour or so but straight away my forst impressions were.. wow the art style and graphics loom great and the UI/overall feel of it is really fluid and feels really good. Like it doesn't look like an alpha at all. Stuff is a bit janky at the minute but its completely playable and a lot of fun.

I'd definitely say pick it up if you're interested.

Has anybody who ordered this on HumbleBundle gotten their Steam key yet?

Edit: Oh my god, this thread kills Google Chrome with all the gifs. Why Google. Why.

I'm pretty sure Chrome was handling gifs correctly not even a few months ago. Then they screwed it up again!

Yup, add Prison Architect to that list and I've probably spent more time playing these games than AAA games. People who hate Early Access have just been playing the wrong games.
Also Broforce, Invisible Inc, Infested Planet, and Door Kickers (last two are finished now)
Easily some of the best examples of Early Access done right.
