Super Bowl XLIX |OT| The Butler Did It

Anyone else noticed Butler's teammates pushed him down after the interception so he doesn't run it out for a possible fumble? Smart move.

Butler said he was trying to dive out of the end zone because he was afraid of giving up a safety...doubt that would have been called that way, but worked out either way.

What does this statement mean? As someone who follows the Bears, as in watches them almost every game, but doesn't pay attention to the finer workings of the whole NFL, I don't know much about John Fox. I just hear it's good a thing he's come to Chicago.

You've just gone from being a shit team to being a predictable, mediocre team that will break your heart in the playoffs instead of just the regular season.

He stepped backwards into the end zone. I don't think there's any doubt it would have been a safety. Regardless he played it perfectly. For a rookie, that's amazing. Not as amazing as his catch, but still amazing.

John Fox sucks.

Am I out if touch or is it common to record yourself watching a game? Nobody I know does this and it would never occur to me.

It's been a thing for 5-6 years. I remember seeing some College Football reactions back in 2009.

Which is still my favorite thing of all time.

True. If he had gone down in endzone it would have been placed on the 20, yes? Or on the one? I can't remember.

If the refs called it in the endzone, that'd be a touchback and it's Patriots ball at the 20. If they called it as if he entered back into the endzone and downed it, then it's a safety and Patriots would have to kick off/free kick back to Seattle (and could have really blown the game then, as a field goal would have won it)

Mayo isn't on Hightower or Collins level anymore. I will frankly be pissed if he takes meaningful reps from them. Mayo has always been overrated. He racked up tackles but rarely ever made big plays especially in big games.

Patriots announced today that Hightower is having shoulder surgery this off season, so it'll be good to have Mayo back.

It is interesting how Mayo went out, the defense shifted, and then basically emerged into a top defense in the league when Mayo went out.

You're right about Mayo being over-rated. He is a tackle monster but somehow seems to never make any big plays, like the opposite of Teddy Bruschi, who never had glowing stats but seemed to be in on every big play that those defenses made.

Yeah, pretty heads up play on his part actually.

I wasn't rooting for either team but when Kearse made that circus catch, I just couldn't believe the Pats were about to get done in on another fluke play like that. Really entertaining Super Bowl over all. I didn't even mind the half time show. Seeing Kravitz and Missy brought back lots of 90's feels.

Of course the Pats deserved to win. Anyone that says they were handed this win is a complete idiot. That stupid playcall at the end isn't what erased a 10 point deficit in the 2nd half. That stupid playcall isn't what forced the Seahawks to punt so often in the second half, allowing for the comeback. Brady threw for 4 TDs against the best defense in the league. Edelman made the best defense in the league look absolutely stupid time and time again. Pats deserved this win.

Can't be said enough. Precisely. And the stupid call not to run only looks stupid in hindsight. It reality it was an easy play that could have been pulled off but was executed poorly and Blunt caught wind of it.

As a Pats fan, after the Kearse catch I very clearly saw how the game was going to end:

- Beast Mode TD
- Brady drives Pats downfield and throws a game-ending INT for a TD to Richard Sherman.
-Richard Sherman 'You Mad, Bro' meme lives on forever

At least Richard will live on as a meme forever. So delicious.

Fox isn't a bad coach and he's an improvement over Mark Trestman (which basically says nothing). He's a stable coach with good coordinators, and he's a low frills, low drama guy. He's also had a record of success with talented but flawed teams, which seems like a very good fit for Chicago.

He's just a mediocre coach on the field. Improvement over Trestman for sure, though.

Ninkovich is very very average. Somehow
because of his race
he's become a folk legend in New England. Dude is overrated over here easily. People talk about him like he's some sort of 10-15 sack monster DE. I really like Ayers as well. Hope the Pats can keep him. With a full off season I think they can really find ways to incorporate him in that defense. Might be mostly on passing downs, but can still be an asset.

I agree that Nink has average skills but he seems to have good football intelligence. Has made a lot of good plays.

That another thing. Yeah, there was some luck involved, but the Patriots read that play. They could have given up, but they held strong in a pretty impossible situation and didn't panic.

Banged up defense and one injured player...wasn't the best defense after the 2nd half. Pats deserved this win? BS!! It was handed to them!!

I don't even like football that much, mostly watched cause of the commercials and nothing else was on, but holy shit at that last play. Why would they not try and run that? It wasn't even 3rd down.

Down 10 in the 4th quarter, 13-15 passing with back to back TD drives

I mean if that's not impressive as hell, what is

The sherman pic reminds me of this one pic, I think it was Jeremy Shockey, from that one game against the Seahawks where they missed the FG.

It's the same reaction we all had last night. =(

Oh man, I remember watching that live.

Might even be able to find the Football topic from when this happened. 2006?

Mayo IMO wasn't overrated, but underrated before. The knock against him always came up that he couldn't make the big play, but he didn't need to

Don't validate this garbage. There was some "luck" in there 2 losses against the giants with Wes dropping the ball and the most obvious one David Tyree. This is football, that stuff happens ALL THE TIME. There was luck the packers pissed all over themselves, there was luck rodgers calf was torn, there was luck dez didn't hold on, there was luck the PI wasn't called. That doesn't change the results. The pats won, deal with it. (this isn't directed at you, only those who are claiming the luck some how changes it)

Can the Seahawks coach challenge the Interception play as a pass interference?
I always think pass interference is like a grey area...

That ending was fantastic! That lucky catch and then the interception.

Oh boy. Really enjoyed it.

Could someone explain how a kneel down wins the game though?

As someone from the UK I'm going to be watching a whole load more next season, always liked to watch it even though I don't get all the rules.

Pretty sure you can't challenge after the 2 minute warning

It counts as a down, which means the team with the ball can waste time until the play clock is about to expire

You kneel down at the end of the game to run down the clock.

Last I remember, you can't challenge penalties, or lack there of. Just spots.

Kneel Down is basically "giving up the down" in the easiest, least likely to fumble, way possible. Doing so restarts the playclock, which means 25 (or whatever it is in the NFL) seconds can go by before you run another play.

No because it was so tight, the defender has a right to go for the ball as well. Which is even more of a reason why a slant in that situation was so dumb.

When you kneel down, it runs 40 seconds off the clock before your next play. It's better than a run play with your running back because you're less likely to fumble.

Kneeling down is "giving yourself up" basically meaning you were tackled with the ball in play so the clock won't stop. The clock only stops if the ball carrier steps out of bounds with the ball or there is an incomplete pass, which is why in that situation you have to either run or kneel down, rather than just throw the ball away.

Think the only penalty you can challenge is 12 men on the field...and you can't challenge in the last 2 minutes of the game (or the half), that has to come from the officials booth.
