Honestly, Marth seems like a great counterpick to Fox and Falco. Still it's getting to the point where the Meta is evolving around 4 characters, and that sucks.

If Melee HD ever does happen, I hope Nintendo does a rebalance just so we can get some different characters at the top again.

no just copy PAL version, except restore characters like Ganondorf that were inexplicably nerfed to their NTSC versions

Yeah pretty much just this. PAL Melee is way better balanced and fixes a lot of the really stupid stuff (aka Fox Usmash KOing as early as it does)

The real question is when is a Falcon main gonna take him to the promise land?

It's too bad that not since Isai has there really been a Falcon competing at the top level. SS, Darkrain, Hax and now S2J have come close, but they all had flaws in their game that prevented them from reaching the top. I think that character has potential with the right player behind him.

too bad his recovery fucking suuuuuuuuuuucks

honestly after this weekend it feels like Pikachu and Yoshi are better than Falcon in this perfect Fox-dominated meta game. How can Falcon with his shitty ass recovery compete with someone like Leffen or Mango? Falcon need an Amsa or Axe to show me.

I feel like Melee HD would be risky. Anything they change could mess it up. And I feel like an imperfect or bad Melee HD could kill Melee faster, rather than save it.

I definitely wouldn't want most of the PAL changes. Maybe just a shorter up B for Fox. But nerfs to Marth, Falco, Sheik (and anyone lower)? Meh, get it out. Ideally they leave the top 5ish and buff some other characters. Especially if they can buff them in a way that leads them to more/cooler combos, rather than just frame safe or high damage shenanigans.

Did they change Falcon's move in 4 because he had the same recovery options as Fox in Brawl.

So where and who hinted at Diddy getting nerfed? Because I've been saying he's bullshit since 3DS release and I want that monkey nerfed into the ground.

I picked up Peach as a main in Melee thanks to Armada and committed myself to learning her in Smash 4 because of it...

End of an era. Is Hungrybox the only one left of the highest of the top professionals who uses a character outside of the Top 4?

Yes, and that's sad. So I'll continue pulling for Axe and aMSa! And I hope Hungrybox doesn't change to Fox, that Jigglypuff changes things up after 20XX sets.

Kotaku giving some well-deserved exposure to the Leffen storyline.

Hungrybox not switching to Fox, lol:

I'm never switching from Jigglypuff.

Leffen potentially ruffling feathers. I mean, I don't think he's wrong here:

God tier list atm IMO
Able to win majors:
@C9Mang0
@EG_PPMD
@ArmadaUGS
Me

@MVG_Mew2King
@LiquidHbox :]

Honestly, I would be surprised if any of the other top 4 felt differently. I just don't see M2K/Hbox ever winning EVO/Apex imo
Except he put PP below Mango. Yeah, right. :P

I can totally imagine Hungrybox going for this bait tho

Oh, I thought the announcement was that Splatoon commercial with the commentators talking over it, lol.

Who got the awards?

Should probably wait until he wins a major like M2K and Hbox have before he starts talking.

No, it was an awards ceremony that was in that "announcements" time slot. It was awards handed to community members for the recognition of the work they did for the community.
Oh. Well that's lame haha. Didn't they hype it up as something big, or was that just posters who did that?

I hope these losses push Mango and Leffen well past the satisfaction of the current Smash Pantheon. Mango the Busta of all Time, and Leffen who still has Gods to overpower convincingly. I don't think Mango has had the true "fire" in him in a long time. I hope to see more from PP's Marth, I think he's better than M2K in neutral but he dropped alot of edgeguards + combos which could put his Marth on that level.

I'm excited to go home and watch top 8 of Melee. I had to go to bed before it ended, and it sounds like it was quite exciting. I love watching an amazing Marth.

It's been a while for M2K though. Only recent one I can think of is Big House 3. True though, outside of Beast he hasn't shown that he can do it himself. And any of them are still capable of winning majors for sure. It feels like Hbox would have to dodge Mango and Leffen though, and M2K would have to dodge PP and Armada to have a shot. I was mostly just agreeing with his ranking though.

You'll enjoy it then. PPMD is incredible. Also as far as Marth matches, it's not in top 8, but check out PewpewU's set vs Hungrybox. Exemplary play for that matchup.

Ever since we saw Mango briefly stop trying in like.... 2010-ish, and Armada retire in 2013... it feels like they aren't playing at their best anymore, barely trying. Even though they're clearly both trying pretty hard now.

I'm glad we're getting some more mixup in the balance of power now. Watching Mango Armada play in grand finals every major started to get a touch routine.

He's beaten M2K once. Lmao.

M2K is the most inconsistent one of the six, but when he is consistent not even try hard Mang0 is guaranteed to win.

Oh. Well that's lame haha. Didn't they hype it up as something big, or was that just posters who did that?

Posters, speculation for the most part. Honestly the way it was slotted in the schedule made people think it was Nintendo-related or an announcement of sorts. They really should have called it "Awards Ceremony" but I guess they wanted to surprise people who got the awards. I take some of the blame for making the speculation but I wasn't alone in it, tons of people in the community thought the same.

I still think M2K in top form/mindset is the best in the world by far.

Yeah pretty much just this. PAL Melee is way better balanced and fixes a lot of the really stupid stuff (aka Fox Usmash KOing as early as it does)

I strongly dislike PAL Melee. Ya the Fox nerfs are nice, but the nerfs to every other character are ridiculous and unnecessary.

Should have just pulled an all-nighter.

Pretty much all of the top 8 matches are worth watching... lots of great matches and moments.

As an aside, I think I spent less than 10 minutes watching the superbowl... when I switched from the Melee stream the superbowl just looked so slow in comparison... Most of that time was the half time show anyway.

I was at a viewing party until singles ended... then had to drive an hour home. Then get up for work at 7. Rough Monday today.
Not sure when the Finals ended in your time zone, so I don't know how much you slept.
Going into Monday, I usually just sleep for 3-4 hours because of various tournaments going on.

Oh, same time zone as Apex. So East Coast. All in all, I ended up with 2-2.5. Not that bad I guess, but hard to wake up.

I used to be fine on a couple hours, but these days it's starting to hit me harder.

Slept less than 3 hours and am already awake for 17 again.

Pulling such days is fine like twice in a row but eventually, it will take its toll. I hope I will be able to keep this up for a while/a few more years. Luckily, my productivity isn't suffering because of that.

Well, you managed and that's what counts. It was worth it and it will be worth it again.

Love Armada but seeing him "dropping" Peach makes me sad :(

Nothing against Fox players but seeing them in Grand Finals, mirror matches, team mirror matches, everywhere is getting boring for me. Armada picking him up is just :(

But good luck for his future. A top player like him cant do wrong with Fox.

You must be forgetting most of the nationals they played last year. Except for Evo, they faced each other in all gfs, all of them were amazing matches. Although Beast and Apex were kind of sloppy, they had great sets in recent memory.

So worth it. I'm in NC, so the hype was real.

Their play was astounding, no doubt. It just felt like the tournaments for a while was boiling down to basically those two players. Seemed like for a while it was likely for them to play in winner's finals, and grand finals (usually with a reset too). And after a few tournaments of that, it was like, I hope I don't see a Mango/AR gfs. Not at all because they aren't good, just looking for change.

I especially loved the way they built it up at MLG though. That kind of fanfare made it even more exciting for me.

I see where you are coming from. I agree as well. It is good to see some variation, Leffen, Hbox, and now PP have stepped up their game and 2015 is shaping to be less polarised then the last 3 years of Mango-Armada dominance (althoug the first quarter of 2014 was quite PPish)

With the lack of any kind of announcements of more support for the competitive scene, I doubt anything like this will ever happen.

I'm of the mindset that all official Nintendo support is only coming from a few passionate folks at Nintendo of America. They helped with setups for Apex. They'll do stuff like that but that's it. Japan probably doesn't give any shits. They will release Mewtwo for Smash 4, and maybe nerf a bunch more characters at that time (because no fighting game designer has ever realized that buffs are better than nerfs), and that will be the last time they touch it. The head staff members will move on to other projects.

If Nintendo did a rebalance with a hypothetical Melee HD, I'd be willing to put actual money on the line that it would get rejected and people would stick with regular Melee.

Maybe if they made fox garbage ;) or did a terrible job balancing. I honestly think most people would give it an honest try before deciding to stick to OG melee.

This would be my ideal scenario. I think if they used smash 4 assets, a remake for the Wii U's successor would be good since Sakurai should be done with smash now and they could use it as platform to groom his successor. Well thats my fantasy anyway.

Melee HD should happen eventually and remain untouched (i.e. don't let Sakurai near it, if possible lol)

Why? Well... no new blood for starters. You want more new players to join in and keep the game alive with new competition.

I mean, Nintendo could play it incredibly safe if they were smart and essentially pull a Windwaker HD, but with even less mechanical improvements. If they were smart they'd realize that would be an easy cash grab for them, since Melee clearly will keep growing.
